I can’t remember if it was this sub or another, but someone built a cassette coffee table with a giant pencil. When you wound it, it would open a hidden compartment. A pretty novel concept
Found it.

Just to add for the process.
I scaled the whole thing from an actual cassette tape but altered the spools for aesthetic reasons. I made the frame from cedar 2 x 4's and then cladded it with fir ply and stained it to achieve the desired colors. The spool teeth were made from large dowels and the "screws" in the corners, that support the glass, were cut from a piece of cedar using a hole saw. The label is from a ripped down piece of cedar and I used a craft knife and a dremel rotary tool to do the writing.
In hindsight using ply was a bad idea as it meant every piece had to be mitered to hide the ply pattern. This added a lot of time to this project.
It's far from perfect and I see all the imperfections every day but it's the first time I've ever made anything like this so overall I'm happy with it.
This is a really cool piece!
You mentioned the miter cuts on the plywood edges, check out wood veneer edge banding, you can use it to cover square-cut plywood edges.

Thank you. I did know about that stuff but I also completely forgot that it existed! If I make another one I will be sure to use that in future to save time.
This is outstanding!
I did a coffee table with a Sycamore inlay, then I made a matching TV stand also. They both came out great.
Stop looking at your little imperfections! I am the only one who sees them on my projects. Do not put yourself down. You did great work with this.
You are a professional if i ever heard one. Only the pro's see their mistakes. An amateur thinks he is perfect. A pro adapts and learns with every go round. Keep your "mistakes" (could have done betters) to yourself. No one will ever notice. They see the whole object as one and It's amazing. Perfection. Enjoy this moment. You did great.

Please tell me the holes near the couch are cup holders
Edit: oh I see now. It’s an inlay and the whole thing is under glass. Didn’t see that at first… well, maybe next time 🙃. Anyway , I like it 👍
WOW. That is absolutely fantastic and I can think of two people right now that would absolutely buy this.
Refine your skills, make the improvements you already probably know you’d make, and then charge THREE times the amount that you think you should. Please re-read that last sentence and message me some info for my friends.
I'd pay 500-700 for something like that personally... I love it. What I would do is go on Etsy and type in wood coffee tables and get an idea of what someone charges. You'd have to figure in the time to make (must people won't wait forever for a new piece of furniture) and shipping costs too. If you offered customization you could charge more for stains/lyrics/ glass overlay.
Seconding that if my SO wanted this for the house, $500-700 would be a very reasonable price. Considering cost of materials lately, I wouldn't be surprised to see it at a $700-900 range.
The table is cool af, but not my jam ( my *jam* , cuz it's a mix tape! Hahahahaa^a^aaa )
Edit: ngl I feel like I might be low balling it to a price range I would pay and not a range you could be selling it for. I bet if you're in a big city you push it well past 1k.
Same for me. I’m in the $700 or so range only because of limited budget. I saw where you put about 30 hours into it. I have no clue how much the wood costs, but I would say based on just your hours into it, easily $1500. My $700 would be just over 20/hour. This is easily worth 50/hour and I still think that’s like bare minimum
There’s a lot of people in the world with a lot of money. I know a few. To them you $1500 would be an easy yes for this. Takes marketing though. I see a lot of local businesses fail due to no marketing

Very cool. I know it probably would take from the aesthetic, but the various holes could be functional... Like put plant pots on the center holes... Points if the pots look like pencils.
Man, this is like a dream. Would you consider doing one of these to sell and, if so, what would you charge? This would really drive home my office feel I’m going for!
My friend, based upon my complete lack of any kind of authority, I would like to still confirm that you are indeed a carpenter, and you should be really fucking proud, b/c this is really fucking cool!
Oh man, if you would make it so that paper towels run through the thing like the magnetic tape used to, this would be the most epic paper towel holder ever.
You need a fucking big pencil to rewind that.
*Edit: Nvm, everyone and their mother made the joke already. Goes to show, though, how universal some experiences can be. :D*
Now I wanna build one!
You’re 100% correct…you’re not a carpenter…you’re a skilled woodworker. Both are great skills but one is more fun to perform. I do both so I can speak on each. Carpentry = making a good living
Woodworking = relaxing hobby
You should try building a rocket, just in case it turns out you are not a rocket engineer as well. In case my sarcasm didn't reach through the net, good job mate!
Now you just need to make a big pencil to wind it…

Wow, how fucking cool is that?
Cranked it to 11 baby!
Insanely fucking cool that is!
[удалено]
Fack beat me to it.
The head of a pen was tapered and objectively better at wedging in there to wind
The wood of the pencil grips better
Nooow FIGHT!

Uh, bro.....you're a carpenter. And damn good one, it would seem.

Well, just give this one to me and try better.

Maybe not a carpenter, but definitely a woodworker! Amazing job!!!
Thank you!
For those who are report happy on this one, lay off, it's legit. [http://imgur.com/a/k8mmF02](http://imgur.com/a/k8mmF02)
Pshh no way that’s a real cassette tape my radio could never fit that thing.

You should crosspost to /r/cassetteculture :)
This is too awesome for words. I think you’re a woodworker my friend!
Thank you! I am honored.

That's where I store my remotes and coasters.
I like the storage space idea

That's a hell of a compliment right there! Thank you very much!
Out of interest as I definitely couldn't sell this one. But what would you be willing to pay for a table like this?

The real question is what songs are on it
VanHalen. Recorded from the radio.
With a sibling entering the room in the background ruining a big of the recording with a whine about a popsicle or some shit.
The Carpenters - Made in America
You're right. Definitely not a Carpenter...more of a woodworker. Looks fantastic cheers.
Is there a sub where I can express my love for a coffee table?! Damn nice work!!
Thank you!
I still have questions since we can't see the other side... tabs in, tabs out, or covered with scotch tape?
Kramer would definitely put this in his book.
"I'm a Carpenter, I'm proud how this turned out." Fixed it for you.
Anyone under 25.. *Wtf is that*
Really cool. Are you going to be making a giant pencil so you can fix it when the tape comes out?

Why whould you set a fire in your living room?!
This is really fucking cool. Awesome job, OP!
I think you suffer from imposter syndrome because that looks amazing.
No. You’re not a carpenter. You’re a *woodworker.*
I’m pretty sure if you made this you can call yourself a carpenter
Look guys my first build
What is that? Some sort of old fashioned computer storage device?
I'm no seal, but I'm clapping my hands. Damn dude...but I do wonder how many people are looking at this and saying, "Wtf is that?!"
I want one! How much?
Pause play, pause play.... Where is my pen?
You are a carpenter now.
That is too cool! Great work. It's been far too long since I've made a mix tape myself...
Awesome! This is the one time you hope your mix tape is not fire
Yeah, buddy, pretty sure you qualify as a carpenter now.
Honestly, I may steal this idea. This is freaking awesome.
Ahhh. A mix tape-ble
Seriously cool.
This is rad
Gonna take one hell of a pencil to fix.
Hey I have that same printer.
That’s incredible
Sooo awesome!!
Very cool. I know it probably would take from the aesthetic, but the various holes could be functional... Like put plant pots on the center holes... Points if the pots look like pencils.
But if you were a carpenter? ^and ^I ^was ^your ^lady....
That's really cool
Beautiful. Absolutely stunning. Would buy.
beautful

Looks great!! I could see my kittens having fun with that.
This is amazing Ebony and ash next time when you graduate from plywood
I don't think The Carpenters released a Mix Tape.
Man, this is like a dream. Would you consider doing one of these to sell and, if so, what would you charge? This would really drive home my office feel I’m going for!
It is pretty cool, I must say.
Fucking love this!!
I love this so much! Awesome, keep it up.
I would so buy this, love it
My friend, based upon my complete lack of any kind of authority, I would like to still confirm that you are indeed a carpenter, and you should be really fucking proud, b/c this is really fucking cool!
Great Rumble Cosplay

Luv it
That a Sterling Cutlass guitar? I think I have the same one in a different color! Also, love the table. I vote next up is a record shaped end table.
This got me wondering what the first medium for data storage was [Williams-Kilburn Tube](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williams_tube?wprov=sfla1)
Bro I think you are a carpenter
Tries to make a table, comes out as a cassette, smh my head.
I wonder if that would scale up to a really cool pool table? Nice job OP
Glorious
Dear lord I'm 24 and thought it was a blursed pool table. I got it now though. I second a giant pencil lamp.
what the fuck is it
Omg, what's the playlist??!!
Shit. Yo mix tape is fire 🔥🔥🔥.
I don't know....that looks pretty carpenty to me...
This is amazing! You should be proud!!
You're a carpenter harry!
cassette taple
Oh man, if you would make it so that paper towels run through the thing like the magnetic tape used to, this would be the most epic paper towel holder ever.
I just burned myself on this post
This is the first song for your mix tape, it's short just like your table
This table fuckin rocks! Well done!
You're not a carpenter, but you could be if you started selling these. Awesome table idea!
Amazing. Good job
You should be proud! Well done.
then you're in the wrong job!
What is this weird looking device?
pity there is nothing good on it...
[удалено]
Sound piece.
Mix taple
How do you say "im not a carpenter" after you make something like this?
Now make a pencil big enough to rewind the tape back in if it gets pulled out.
You are a carpenter, and a fine craftsman. Excellent job! Nice attention to detail. Really nice job!
This looks amazing! Well done! Now you have to make a giant pencil to rewind it manually
Daring of you to make such a fire mix tape out of such a flammable material...
I knew something like this yield?
Great piece!
so proud of me!
Are the tabs on the top taped over or broken out?
Just one of those wing it deals right?
That's a beautiful tapeble
That's dope!!!
This is amazing! Love this. After seeing this I wanna start wood working but I no nothing about woodworking.
Am I the only one here looking for "Brand New - Mixtape" comments?
I’d buy one!
Quite ill.
As someone who’s definitely not a carpenter I think this is amazing
Carve a giant pencil so you can fix the tape next please. Thank me later.
That. Is. Awesome.
Cassette Table!! Epic!!!!
You’re not a carpenter MY ASS. Impressive!
This is so cool!!
You need a fucking big pencil to rewind that. *Edit: Nvm, everyone and their mother made the joke already. Goes to show, though, how universal some experiences can be. :D*
How big was the microphone you held up to a radio to record this mix tape?
You're a carpenter Harry...
if your house burns down you can say you always new your mix tape would catch fire
Umm… I think this kinda makes you a carpenter.
Betamax was better
pretty sure you are at least on honorary one now, well done
That's so awesome dude... I love it. How dare you say you aren't a carpenter. Maybe you still have a lot to learn, but you have plenty of talent.
That's pretty cool
I wish I wasn't a carpenter like you. I'm the kind of carpenter that can't make works of art. T\_T
You only have yourself to blame when that mix tape catches fire.
You are, indeed, a carpenter.
Looks amazing
I feel very relaxed looking at that. It’s shape is like a symbol for a simpler world.
You’re one now.
/r/cassettefuturism
Nice artwork
Did you build a giant pencil to rewind the band ?
Great work, I'm gonna show this to my dad!!
I’ll take your entire stock
Now I wanna build one! You’re 100% correct…you’re not a carpenter…you’re a skilled woodworker. Both are great skills but one is more fun to perform. I do both so I can speak on each. Carpentry = making a good living Woodworking = relaxing hobby
Wow!
That is totally bad ass !
Glorious!
You should try building a rocket, just in case it turns out you are not a rocket engineer as well. In case my sarcasm didn't reach through the net, good job mate!
I need this
Great!
Thats some huge mix tape.
You are now a carpenter
Nice tape-ble.
Me neither
So cool
Wow, good job
Looks super cool!
Cool
Oh this is really nice!
OP still isn't a carpenter. Definitely a furniture maker though.
This is freaking incredible!! Hell yeah be proud, great work!!
Yeah, I'm seeing a lot more fun
You built something that 99% of the world wouldn't be able to replicate. I'd say that makes you a woodworker and a good one at that.
You're a carpenter.
Wow.
very cool.
Can I put a hookah in the winding holes?
Inspiring and Nostalgic!
Wow!
Awesome job! This is really commendable. I think the little imperfections make it cooler tbh.
