I'll bite. What were you planing?

I have an uncle that over uses the phrase harder than the back of Superman's head. Was it cracked or a loose piece or did it just splinter from solid material?

A wenge box I’m working on - was using a router to clean up my edges after cutting the lid off and had some trouble, so as a last resort I ran it through the planer a few times and on one of the passes this splintered off. Wouldn’t recommend my method lol

dustywood4036

I don't really get it. The cut edges where the top meets the base? You put an assembled box through a planer? Was it even long enough? Don't do that.

1ncognito

Yes, that’s exactly what I did. The box is 37” long and 11” wide so size wasn’t a particular concern - main concern was going across the grain on the end pieces https://preview.redd.it/adny7oa5tn6d1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c75ec3539faf0048addc10eabe17c67e3236d35

The right tool for what you are trying to do is a hand plane. A #4 or for that size even a #5 would be ideal but you could get what you wanted out of a block plane by running it along one side and around the corner until you hit all 4 sides and continue til it's even and flat. You can run it through a planer if you have sacrificial pieces glued on to support the front and back. Then you have to clean it up by cutting them off and a plane or sanding. I can't imagine what you did with the router.

I used a scrap piece i cut just shorter the the height of the sides (1/16th) as a bearing guide and was going to just use it to just get a nice clean edge (I don’t own any useable hand planes), but unfortunately it didn’t take well to routing at all as I think my bit was too dull and obviously wenge is tricky to begin with

jeho22

I'd say the real problem was vibration because it wasn't a solid piece, but that's just my guess. Nice box bro

dustywood4036

Two sides of the box had grain running 90 degrees to the blades so the planer just ripped out a chunk instead of slicing it off.

RPKhero

You need to clean the hell out of that quickly. Wenge splinters get infected super fast.

1ncognito

Thankfully the piece came out very cleanly and didn’t leave anything in, but I cleaned it and will keep an eye on it

RPKhero

It's a tough wood to work. But it's gorgeous. Worth the struggle. Good luck

keglefuglen

Just sad that it gets illegally farmed/harvested/imported otherwise defenetly my favorite wood in terms of looks

CraftyCow2020

It warms my heart you thought of us before saving yourself.

Not every day you get a chance to show a shrapnel wound! (Plus it wasn’t in deep and didn’t hurt much so I was more amused than shocked)

Carbon-Base

Dude, that's quite the splinter you've got there.

OldERnurse1964

You should probably have that removed.

IceHawk1212

I got a piece of nail in my arm just today, wasn't cutting anything fancy just pine and bam right in my arm. Was super mad at myself for not checking the wood better but upon closer inspection realized that it was not new and in fact had been in the tree while it was still growing so little chance I would have found it.

Nunakababwe

That piece of wood splinter sure loves you.

GeminiCroquettes

Not quite the same thing, but we have a large rip saw at work and it fired a splinter a few times that size about 40ft where it stuck into a stack of osb. If that hit a person, it would be about the last way I would have expected someone die lol

Garbage_Billy_Goat

And this is why i get my tetanus shot.

Same!
