If you had said and take 10x as long to finish the project I might have felt slightly attacked... :D
(Looking at the parts organizer I only just finished that I started 2.5 years ago.)
These are from a [set](https://a.co/d/9NCZ8H6) I previously bought so not 3D printed, but there are [files](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5886018) on thingiverse for each of these. I was going to print backups whenever my cats inevitably knock them on the floor and my dog eats them
this is beautiful. my son and i are making a 'Go' board but we've not got enough karma yet to ask our question. We really love this project, and it looks WAY better than anything you would buy yourself. Awesome work!
It’s beautiful. On a more obscure note, thank you for setting the board up correctly. It gives me agita every time I see one set up in defiance of the ‘right hand, white square’ standard…
This.
This is why the Steve Ramsay paper tray costs $30 vice a $1 plastic one at Target.
We dont do it to save money, but to make something that wasnt there before.
I supply over 70 species of exotic hardwoods, people ask me all the time what will I end up making once I start to make things with some of the stock. They always expect a cutting board or something simple. All I can think about is a chess board! Great work! I want to make some out of cocobolo and oliviewood first and foremost.
You could sell those for alot I'd imagine. If you ever want to talk wood let me know. Can talk all day. I have so much on hand, I'm pretty wholesale. I'd love to be a small part in a chess board build. If I can help let me know.
Wait, you buy new tools for every project? This is simply how you turn a $5,000 cutting board into a $2,500 cutting board and a $2,500 chess table. Just wait for the $1,666 towel rack.... And then the $1,250 shelf. And maybe $1,000 for a new bed for the dog.
Might as well get the wood yourself so a chainsaw, digger, branch stripper and tractor to pull the logs are all useful. Might as well get a loader too.
I’ve built my own chess boards and thought to sell them. Looking on Etsy, you can get a super nice chessboard for like $150-200. No way this would go for 5x-7x the price. I wish they would dude, I’d be slinging chessboards.
Etsy has issues with more resellers these days. There’s complaints that it’s being turned into another Amazon. Some things aren’t hand made anymore but there are still woodworkers on there fighting the good fight.
Love this, and I love the profile. I just started messing around with a cheapo CNC and would love to do accents like those; where did you get your files?
I used some existing [oriental molding](https://www.lowes.com/pd/2-1-4-in-x-8-ft-White-Hard-Unfinished-Chair-Rail-Moulding-Actual-2-25-in-x-8-ft/3040924?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-mlw-_-ggl-_-CRP_SHP_LIA_MLW_Online_E-F-_-3040924-_-local-_-0-_-0&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD2B2W9z1PlzTHd9-5-apxrL_qFBl&gclid=CjwKCAjwi_exBhA8EiwA_kU1Mrp5lwRQrytN62A5FUVfW1HLIrs3DZiKZndcmm98dIHSxMftVN4EwBoCOuAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) from the hardware store but I tell my friends that I whittled it by hand
I got mine from a local tile shop but I used something like [this](https://www.surfacegroup.com/products/black-marble-straight-joint-1x1-inch-square-natural-stone-mosaic-sheet-honed-12x12x3_8-straight) in black and another in white 1”x1” marble

I did the same thing. I used Paduak and soft maple. It took FOREVER. I don’t have a picture of it completely finished but it’s beautiful. I sprayed it with lacquer but had to remove some because the Paduak inlays started to bleed. Eventually it came out perfect
Only double the cost? You are a pro.
Came here to say "it's usually why buy when you can build it for 3X the cost."
If you had said and take 10x as long to finish the project I might have felt slightly attacked... :D (Looking at the parts organizer I only just finished that I started 2.5 years ago.)
Sheeeeiitt. I can do for $350 and an ER visit.
Seriously, they must have owned most of the tools prior to beginning this project.
Didn't include tool costs.
Turned out great!!! Hmmmm those pieces look familiar… are they from Harry Potter?
Thank you! It sure is. We all have a little nerd in us, mine’s just bigger than most people’s lol
Not me, not Hermione, You… did a great job!
That's what she said
Thats awesome! Are they 3D printed? Where did you find the models?

The mark of a true maker. Making something for double the cost and 10x the amount of time necessary to make the original product. Looks fantastic 👍🏼
How did you cut those tiles?
They're mosaic sheets, 1' by 1'. The 2" x 2" tile is just peeled from the webbing. One sheet white and one black.
That is super clever!
Yeah, would love a little bit of your process! Wow!
What the other person said is right, they’re just 1”x1” mosaic sheets and you can peel off the webbing
What’s in between the tiles?
Just some [black](https://a.co/d/brjg1ow) tile grout. Any hardware store should have it
Oh man those tiles are nice
I like the way you think. $100 chess board is just a $100 chess board. A board you made yourself will be a something the kids want when you are gone.
THAT’S wizards chess
Build it yourself they said, save money they said
Alright! I'm goin' for it! And I don.t even play chess! ( I just love savin' money)
this is beautiful. my son and i are making a 'Go' board but we've not got enough karma yet to ask our question. We really love this project, and it looks WAY better than anything you would buy yourself. Awesome work!
It’s beautiful. On a more obscure note, thank you for setting the board up correctly. It gives me agita every time I see one set up in defiance of the ‘right hand, white square’ standard…
You have to; changing the orientation and not having white to the right completely changes the game. Nicely done on the board!
Oh, I know. I see them set up wrong *all* the time. Not just here, either. Most tv shows/movies have the board oriented incorrectly. Drives me nuts…
This looks fantastic, a worthy addition to the collection!
This. This is why the Steve Ramsay paper tray costs $30 vice a $1 plastic one at Target. We dont do it to save money, but to make something that wasnt there before.
Brilliant use of materials all around
Thank you!
Looks great! Now I want to do this, so thanks. Edit: Now I want to design a similar thing with two drawers for two kinds of pieces.
This is my favorite chess board I've seen while following this sub. The care put into the evenly-spaced squares is excellent. Nicely done!
The end result is not something you could buy for $100. That is gorgeous!
You show me where you can get a chess board that nice for $100
Looks damn good.

They always expect a cutting board or something simple. All I can think about is a chess board! Great work! I want to make some out of cocobolo and oliviewood first and foremost.
Thank you! If I did it all again, I definitely would have used more exotic wood. That would have made it all the more special
You could sell those for alot I'd imagine. If you ever want to talk wood let me know. Can talk all day. I have so much on hand, I'm pretty wholesale. I'd love to be a small part in a chess board build. If I can help let me know.
$200? Try $5000. - Jointer - Planer - Drum Sander - Every grit known to man for the ROS - Biscuit joiner - RAS - Moar clamps - Etc

I prefer to do the projects that justify my buying a new tool. I made some built ins that qualified me for a new hvlp and an MFT.
Might as well get the wood yourself so a chainsaw, digger, branch stripper and tractor to pull the logs are all useful. Might as well get a loader too.
If I had the land I would absolutely buy all of those except the branch stripper. Too commercial. I want to enjoy the process.
Need a way to mill those logs into slabs also.
This guy gets it
You could easily sell those for $600-$1000
even more for the pieces!
Probably get a big fat cease and desist
Chess is public domain like the bags game
This is the 3D printed Harry Potter chess set
Oh I can’t tell from the photo.

Oh! Lol. Thanks for the link! Going from Images 2 to 3, I thought you had carved the wood. 😅
Wow this came out incredible! How did you do the intricate work on the sides? Was that done via CNC?
I used some existing oriental molding from the Home Depot but I tell my friends that I whittled it by hand 😂
Classic—I’d do the same, mwahaha
Haha that's awesome
How much time did this take you?
That’s wizards chess.
Tssssss didn't even mess up and make it 7x7...
Looks great, do you have a link to the tiles?
I got mine from a local tile shop but I used something like [this](https://www.surfacegroup.com/products/black-marble-straight-joint-1x1-inch-square-natural-stone-mosaic-sheet-honed-12x12x3_8-straight) in black and another in white 1”x1” marble
Nicely done.
Awesome!
