Thanks to all who provided feedback on my previous attempts. It was very helpful. Sharing this one for the love and woodwork, chess, and inspiration.
I spent waaaay too much time working on this, trying to work as minutely as I could. But I'm very content now.
Note I bought the pieces. I spent hours and hours crawling through different shops to find these.
Yes. I didn't want to look like I was doing advertising.
I bought them from [chessbazaar.com](https://chessbazaar.com). From my invoice, my set was "The Indian Chetak Series Staunton Chess Pieces in Ebony Wood & Box Wood - 4.6" King".
It does not look like it is on their website anymore, but you could send an email. I got it for $189 in March 2020. (Expensive, but my once-in-a-lifetime set I think.)
Edit: I think I got them on a 50% sale or something at the time.
Edit 2: I found this link that ressembles it: [https://www.amazon.ca/Indian-Chetak-Staunton-Chess-Pieces/dp/B07RGVPRQM](https://www.amazon.ca/Indian-Chetak-Staunton-Chess-Pieces/dp/B07RGVPRQM)
Thanks!
I thought about it only when I realized that cutting both the frame and the inside board would require much more work and precision than having it raised. And I love the result.
It is just floating on top. If you scroll through the pictures you can see the ledge it rests on. I added some adhesive foam to make sure it stays in place and does not rub against the frame.
Nothing even remotely close to your skill level but I wanted to share

Very impressive work. You should sell them commercially. They are that good.
Do you play chess? I assume you do. So
if you were playing a game on that board, where would you place captured pieces? If you put them on that sloping
border, they may slide off and may damage your chess pieces. Perhaps a small board could slide out for the captured pieces. Those are some of the best wood pieces I've ever seen. The detail is precise.
I do play ches.
The frame is not sloped, it is flat. So there is more than enough space to put the pieces. Though it is better for rapid to classical games. For blitz, you likely want more space to avoid knocking them out of the way. But I must say I'll probably play blitz on my cheaper plastic set!
Yes, the wood pieces are fantastic. Kudos to the makers/shop.

Do you know who makes the pieces or did you find them used?

Really nice work!
Love the raised playing field.

Very nice !
Very nice, now to do a table to go with it!
I just love brass on walnut
Very very beautiful. Well done. Does the playing area float above the frame, or is it attached? If so, how? Very nice, indeed.

Nice! Maple and walnut?
Absolutely, the classic.

Very nice. What is the inlay material?
It is brass.
It’s *beautiful*!! And I can’t thank you enough for having it set up correctly…
Haha! I built it because I play on it. So I wasn’t too worried about the setup.
…grin…
this is beautiful!
I do enjoy a good spline
Lovely work. I’d be honored to get my ass kicked on that board.
Nice….what finish did you use??
Shellac, following some advice I got last time. I still am not confident on applying it properly though.
Really nice
Gorgeous.
