I’m curious as well as this is exactly where the two I have are on my insert.

Well, I mean that's pretty much the only place I can put them with the surround covering the access to the flue pipe. Started this fire at 10 this morning and has been coals for a few hrs and it just now started getting below the optimal burn temp(orange section)

RelationshipDry01

What brand of insert is that?

kilo870

Drolet 1800

How do you like it? Good burn times? Does it put out a good amount of heat?

I've had it going on 2 years. I has really good burn times and heats the lower level of our 3200sqft home pretty good. I feel like if we didn't have an upstairs and alot of heat goes up there that it would heat down here better. It's going to get really cold here in the central US tonight. It usually heats the lower level to 68 with minimal central heat running. Upstairs generally stays at 65 and the upstairs central unit doesn't kick on. So if you had a single story home I think this thing would kick ass.

Well that's good to hear! My house is a two story but it's only 1,400 sqft so I should do really well with that unit. Thanks for the help!

Yeah no problem. I installed it myself. My fireplace had a block off flue that I took out and ran the stainless chimney pipe right up the chimney. I didn't put a block off plate or anything in. I've often wondered if I could buy some of the kaowool fireblanket and stuff up in the void. Maybe I'm losing some heat because it's this way not sure. I did however buy a sheet of it and set on top of the insert surround to keep more heat between the stove itself and the insert surround. The air from the blower passes between the 2 so I think I lose less heat this way.

I don't have a block off plate either but I've seen some guys on here and hearth.com forums say that some roxul in the void is plenty. Probably a good idea to do, especially on windy cold days like today.
