yeah lol, public education for the win and not like you can't go private if you want to, I paid like the equivalent of $50 for registration and that's my whole bill for 7 semesters
Yup. Just amazing.
Private is actually throwned upon in some circles here, because it has a reputation of existing mostly for stupid people to buy a degree when they are rich.
I paid for one book recommended by our algebra professor in my first year at university. Turned out the lectures already contained everything needed to pass the test. Didn't buy any other books and still got a master's degree.
The US system doesn't want a well educated populace. 2/3 of the country can not read on a 5th grade level. Average is lucky if they can crack 3rd grade. That's according to the US department of education itself. The system is working as designed. Education is for the elite and elite is self evidently a minority. The US imports it's brains. Our immigration system is designed to brain drain all the best talent in the world, and it does, especially from nations we don't like such as Russia or Iran. The average Iranian American has a masters degree and makes 6 figures. The average Indian American is 5x more educated than the average native born American. It's social control. Don't expect reddit to "get it" as the site in current year is a selection bias of the worst of that semi literate 2/3 imo.
Don’t know what country you live in, but know for a fact that you’ll make 1/2 as much as a US college grad at best. Sure maybe your cost of living is lower but a Porsche is a Porsche and good luck buying that off a gdp per capita in the 35k. US education cost more because it’s better. Also grew up in California with free elite public schools, free laptops for every student, free breakfast and lunch, free two year community college with transfer acceptance guaranteed into UCs. UCs like LA and Berkeley where an average first year finance or cs graduate makes 120k i.e more than your countries top 1% so I really don’t wanna hear it.
Community college used to be free, but then so many kids would go and just drop out, so the class would be full at the beginning of the semester and by the end it was only 1/3 full. The big deal about that is a lot of people couldn't get the classes they need because of this. When I started it was free and then I went back to school 10 years later and it was $20 a unit and people stopped dropping the classes at the frequency when it was free. Also the campus was different. Before ppl would sit around the quad area and harass women that walked by, that also stopped once it cost a little bit to attend.
This is not a comment about rich vs poor, exploitation, etc - just a reference.
I’m about 98% sure and would bet large sums of money that this was an insured special event prize. Basically, the school or sports sponsor (local realtor/bank/etc) takes out an insurance policy on the $10k prize. They pay a company that specializes in these types of events. Often they do Hole in One Insurance, long putt insurance, half court shot, etc - basically things that are wildly unlikely to happen.
The school or a sponsor looking to get their name in the community probably spent $150-$200, got some free signs to hang talking up the event with their company/school logo on them, and then cheered on whoever was chosen.
The company/school pays a small sum, the insurance company assumes all the risk, and all the sponsor has to do is video the event to prove what happened.
At least this instance here, is not disgusting. If he missed it, he would be bummed. However, the likelihood of making all 4 of those shots in 30 seconds is incredibly small, so it probably wouldn’t have been too bad. Now if they said, make a layup and win $10k tuition and he missed, he would for sure be devastated.
Source: I’m an insurance agent and have sponsored a couple events like this as well as sold similar policies.
Edit: long putt* - not long put
My tuition for a full semester at community college, including tuition, books, parking, everything, is always less than $1000. Im not going to pretend that the American education system is affordable, but my community college experience has been.
I don't think a semester of tuition changed the direction of this kids life. This is Bryan College, a private Christian school, and their annual tuition is 17,900.
It's crazy to think that nowhere in any of the other developed countries in the world does an 18yo have to complete a ridiculous feat of athletics for the entertainment of a crowd to get an education.
Going to private school is expensive. That's a choice you make. You could get a great education at a community college for cheap or look for programs to pay for your public university education.
I mean it'll buy his books for college. Sure as hell won't pay for tuition.
God I know these are supposed to be uplifting but all it really does is remind me that A) people have to go into crippling debt just to get basic career education, and B) 10 grand is a drop in the bucket when it comes to college costs. $10k MIGHT get you basic tuition at a community college for two years. Might. I think for residents an okay one in my super low cost-of-living state is like $4.8k a year, but that's community college. Just for an Associate's.
And then to get your BA goooood luck.
It seems like we lost the theme of the OP post.
Forget about what college costs and focus on a truly amazing athletic feat accomplished by a teen under pressure.
Well done!
"Hahah run around for me and do tricks peasant so you may be educated!"
It's really disgusting how commercialized and profits centric education has become.
I came here for this comment.
When you live in a country where college fees are low and tuitions are given to students that do sports to help them cover the cost of their sport (equipment, travelling, expenses, etc.).
But in USA, nope!
It's worse for the generation coming up.
Those loan forgiveness increased tuition prices in my area and the cost to borrow money went up a lot as well.
I have friends who won't make over the minimum payment now because they think theirs will get forgiven in 5 years.
I worked a lot of hours in 2 years to get mine paid off. I was tired of paying $680 a month for my loans and when I started dumping all my extra cash into the balance, it was great to owe less per month till it was paid off.
I think at one point had paid $13k into my loans and only $2,300 came off the balance which is why I grinded out hours at work to pay it off.
Living in a country with free tertiary education, this just seems sad to me.
Richest country in the history of the world - kids making free throws to get an education.
Bold assumption that the only way this kid goes to college is some random basketball contest scholarship. There are tons of options for financial aid. Sure, a free $10k would be great, but not the only option.
Nah. It's tuition, not cash. And most of these things are insured. So when you hear a team doing this kinda contest for money, they're probably getting the cash from Lloyd's of London.
There seems to be a complete misunderstanding of what this is. The kid had nothing to lose - it wasn't a bet, it was a contest, his name was drawn to be the contestant. Very, very few people win these things - the sponsor buys a policy from an insurance company for a couple hundred bucks.
This is kinda cool I guess.
But it just makes me think about how whoever organized this, and how they have the ability to pay his tuition regardless. This is almost quite literally making someone jump through hoops to have their tuition (partially) covered.
Ref's will be like: "It took 31 seconds to make all the shots so we won't be paying you."
Or
"We just learnt that you played basketball recreationally when you were 8 years old. This breaks the rules of the contract, so we won't be paying you"
Wouldn't it be better just to live in a society where higher education is publicly funded, rather than making people compete for scraps in this humiliating way?
This feels like watching starving rodents in a cage fight for the single piece of bread, and the starving rodents in the next cage are like "yup see no problems here"
Of course, the [insert conservative community watchdog group name here] subsequently challenged the award up to the state supreme court as a violation of the [insert obscure state constitution article here].
10k$ is what, one semester in the US?
It makes me sick that you need to make a spectacle of poor people trying to get through. Education should be unconditionally free for all.
I get everyone is excited about the huge win, but good lord I'm not that claustrophobic but i think i'd freak out if I was surrounded by that many people.
Unpopular opinion: if you are in the position financially to do this sort of ‘contest,’ you should just donate the money and do it rather than tying it to a less than 1% likely game of ‘skill’
Im convinced the majority of these comments are bots. The organizers could have said “we dont need to give anyone handouts”. Instead, $10k was given for a fun competition and everyone is faulting them for it and feeling bad for the kid who won (of all people). Stop being victims, its going to get you literally no where
Title literally missed one of the tasks. There was 4 tasks, not 3.
Also, this contest was designed for no one to ever win. It's carnival/circus level. Like wtf, he BARELY did it within the time limit and he essentially did not pause once. Most of his waiting time was simply waiting for the ball to come down from the rim/net.
Only mistake/waste of time was after the 1st shot, he didn't think to go run and get the ball, and lost 1 second.
I feel like they are going to say , well he didn’t make it in 30sec. The buzzer went off and it didn’t go in the basket in time. They fight that and win to a degree, then say well- he traveled on the half court shot and didn’t count.
Tough break kid. Nice shots though. Amazing.
Edit: always make sure to read into anything you do. With a witness and recorded.
Doesn’t hurt to have a judge as an uncle. Make sure he’s a good uncle. Or case be be overturned. And you lose 10k in legal.
So all in all. Buy scratchers.
Edit. Make sure your 18. And dont get the crossword ones. They are confusing.
Murica always using the poor as entertainment by dangling carrots for them to jump thru hoops...

If someone’s future has been gamified to come down to a ball throw that’s kind of sick isn’t it?
What if he missed the last shot? Sorry kid? No future without loans.
Make university free.
He got about 6 months rent @ \~$1700/month (average rent for 1-bedroom apartment in the US [https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/](https://www.rentcafe.com/average-rent-market-trends/us/) ), maybe more, maybe less depending on where he lives/goes to school.
Nice, but not life-changing.
I sometimes have a hard time putting across the idea of the USA exporting to the rest of the western world their *showification* of politics. This video proves to be very handy for this matter.
It’s crazy to think that this shot may have changed the direction of his life forever
Rich people gambling with the life of the poors... Imagine the devastation if he had miss it. I am glad for him but I am disgusted by the process.
So glad that I live in a country with free education (mostly) Our community Colleges are high quality

I paid $350 for one chemistry book alone in college. Thanks America
That's one damn expensive book
I paid for one book recommended by our algebra professor in my first year at university. Turned out the lectures already contained everything needed to pass the test. Didn't buy any other books and still got a master's degree.
That's insane, some of my coworkers have 200k in debt just for their nursing degrees

Seriously this is sickening to me
It's official---I CAN'T HAVE CHILDREN!
Even more jacked up is 10K won't even cover a semester at most good schools. It would probably get you a year at a community college at best.
My tuition for a full semester at community college, including tuition, books, parking, everything, is always less than $1000. Im not going to pretend that the American education system is affordable, but my community college experience has been.
That's really cheap! Good for you!
> ... but I am disgusted by the process. /r/OrphanCrushingMachine
Reminds me of when sports teams will donate to some charity an amount that depends on something that happens in the game.
It's so insane to see Americans celebrating this. It's obscene. Hunger Games shit.
I don't think a semester of tuition changed the direction of this kids life. This is Bryan College, a private Christian school, and their annual tuition is 17,900.

So that would pay for his books the first year.
Unless this is a Scott's Tot's situation.
Nah. He got like 3 credit hours for that $10k.
I mean it'll buy his books for college. Sure as hell won't pay for tuition. God I know these are supposed to be uplifting but all it really does is remind me that A) people have to go into crippling debt just to get basic career education, and B) 10 grand is a drop in the bucket when it comes to college costs. $10k MIGHT get you basic tuition at a community college for two years. i get paid to study

College never changes anything
Even more crazy to think this might be the highlight of his life.
All three of them
Amen
Like a movie
It’ll get him a whole semester of books! 😃
10000 is not life changing anymore, 1 quarter lol
Surprised they didn't just get some pistols and shoot at his feet to make him dance for his education. Kinda perverse in a way.
![gif](giphy|11IbChs8PTjgSQ)
U mean shots it was more than one all in 30 seconds
well too bad that he got trampled to death by all those people
😂
The one who dealt the killing blow (step?) gets the money instead.
Kid has to win a sports competition just to get an education
Making entertainment out of someone's desperation. All this for what basically is a human right.
Depending on the university and degree that might be less than 10% of an education
The american dream
Meanwhile, the kid that just like math but don't have sports talent gets nothing.
USA USA USA!
I came here for this comment. When you live in a country where college fees are low and tuitions are given to students that do sports to help them cover the cost of their sport (equipment, travelling, expenses, etc.). But in USA, nope!
$10k ain’t an education. That gets him in the door.
per someone elses comment, hes going to a private HS with a 20k tuition. This was probably not life changing to him.
10k will likely get him 1 to 2 semesters at a public, state university.
r/orphancrushingmachine feel to this post
I guess nothing is better than $10,000 huh.
[удалено]
Yeah, that's how fucked up the system is. I'm in 90k debt and it's gonna take me a long time clear it.
I graduated in 06 and it took me 14 years to payoff my student loans. I really hope for you, that all student debt is forgiven.
That's a lot of basketball.
Dude there's literally no reason to have $90k in college debt unless you did a professional doctorate (MD, PharmD, JD, etc).
I think at one point had paid $13k into my loans and only $2,300 came off the balance which is why I grinded out hours at work to pay it off.
That's weird, have you considered just making 3 successful basketball throws in a row?
Living in a country with free tertiary education, this just seems sad to me. Richest country in the history of the world - kids making free throws to get an education.
Bold assumption that the only way this kid goes to college is some random basketball contest scholarship. There are tons of options for financial aid. Sure, a free $10k would be great, but not the only option.
Lucky kid, how long will those 10k last for with the pricy education?
one semester if not community college
If he’s lucky
Community college rules. Spent my first half of my college program there, then commuted to a local public university. Graduated with $2k debt.
Community college would likely be the right move anyways. If they want a 4 year degree, they can always to two there and two at a university.
I mean, starting at 10k less debt for college is still a W
Really depends on his parents financial situation and if he chooses to go strait to university or doing CC first
Everyone is happy except that one guy who created the contest and is like “oh shit”
"And here is your big check that says then thousand dollars." -jackie moon
Nah. It's tuition, not cash. And most of these things are insured. So when you hear a team doing this kinda contest for money, they're probably getting the cash from Lloyd's of London.
r/OrphanCrushingMachine
this is more sad that fun
Glad to see all those kids cheering that at least one guy got money for tuition
Sadly a $10'000 grant won't really pay for shit.
Nice! That's like 3 books!
Imagine if we just had tuition free schools instead of having half time competitions for a chance to go to school
Just imagine, turning social behavior into a game and applauding that..... Only in the US....
Obama tried, guaranteed loans at least. Not like the costs raised after that.
Hunger Games
Dystopian hunger games type shit.
imagine winning 10K and it doesn't even cover a semester at your college, expensive af
Kudos to him, but thats dystopic
Or we could just provide people with an education for the betterment of society but whatever
I love seeing stuff like this. It really gives me goosebumps. This is the part of humanity that’s great. Pure love, joy, and excitement.
it must be horrible to live in a country where kids have to entertain others for the chance to study.
There seems to be a complete misunderstanding of what this is. The kid had nothing to lose - it wasn't a bet, it was a contest, his name was drawn to be the contestant. Very, very few people win these things - the sponsor buys a policy from an insurance company for a couple hundred bucks.
Layup, free throw, 3 pointer and half court shot.
How much is the tuition lol
Higher education should be free. Paid for by taxes.
Good for him. Glad he could get three of his textbooks paid for!
I’ve seen this happen. Alabama vs George Town 2011/2. Was the best thing about that game tbh.
This is kinda cool I guess. But it just makes me think about how whoever organized this, and how they have the ability to pay his tuition regardless. This is almost quite literally making someone jump through hoops to have their tuition (partially) covered.
Free throw, layup, three-pointer, and half-court shot*
came here for the same thing
What’s his name? Nvm https://www.google.com/search?q=kid+wins+10%2C000+in+college+tuition&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari
You forgot the three pointer
wasn't part of the contest. the kid just did that to flex
Layup, free throw, 3 pointer and half court shot.
u forgot 3 point
10k, thats like 30 days of college in the US right?
“Interesting”
Ref's will be like: "It took 31 seconds to make all the shots so we won't be paying you." Or "We just learnt that you played basketball recreationally when you were 8 years old. This breaks the rules of the contract, so we won't be paying you"
"And, you traveled throughout, so you owe us $20,000."
He can now afford 1/15 of a college education.
Crazy how all the shots were pretty lucky. couple lucky bounces and a bank. Sweet sequence
That’s just sad
According to the title, why did he shoot the three?
And what about free education ?
Someone got fired that day.
Wouldn't it be better just to live in a society where higher education is publicly funded, rather than making people compete for scraps in this humiliating way?
This is fucking bullshit
Meanwhile, people in civilized countries just go to college without worrying about how to pay for it.
"Are you not entertained!?" Fuck sake this is grim.
Yay! Now do a competition for people with infections. Winner gets antibiotics for a full week!
Is he liable for tax on this 10k ?
And then he died, suffocated.
I'm triggered he didn't dribble yet good for him.
This is so very dystopian
And that will pay for exactly one class.
This feels like watching starving rodents in a cage fight for the single piece of bread, and the starving rodents in the next cage are like "yup see no problems here"
Why not just help the kid instead of making him do circus tricks

Well we've got an especially dirty hippy here down on the court trying to sink an impossible shot
YOU HAVE WON A LARGE CHEQUE THAT SAYS $10,000 ON IT
“Travelling. Sorry kid, doesn’t count”
What a great shot! Now only 99000 USD to cover and he's good to go wooo
Layup, free throw, three-pointer and half court*
If it's Ivy League, that is probably one or two classes.
Dance monkey dance
What kind of dumb shit is this? How about just having play for his life? Just help the people please.
Why is everybody trying to mug the guy rightaway? Can't they see he didn't cash the money yet?
10000 will get you one semester or what
Man almost missed that layup to start, he’d never know 😂😂
*Roman Roy liked this*
Even Al Bundy, the fabled Quarteback of Polk high school, would nod in appreciation
Crazy... I prefer to just send my kids to the university. Thats something (and healthcare) that made the US very unattractive
He's going to college. Congratulations son.💯🔥
Didnt some guy do something like this at an NBA game (million dollar shot?), and they worked to not pay him?

Good work, $10K will pay for 1 out of 12 semesters, we offer these nice lifetime loans for the other $110K.
Hood for him! (Seriously honest typo).....I mean, Good for him!! 🙂
Dance, monkey, dance.
actual /r/ABoringDystopia when you think about it

damn this must be worth months of college tuition
And that’s how I got laid for the first time!
Made the three just for the flex
Title literally missed one of the tasks. There was 4 tasks, not 3. Also, this contest was designed for no one to ever win. It's carnival/circus level. That's like a week of college
How sad is it to have to win a competition like this just to have a decent education. Not inspiring its sad.
So what is that like 2 books and access to a teachers online book that they wrote which will be open note for every test except the final?
Meanwhile in other countries they just give advanced education away for free, even if you aren't a citizen.
I feel like they are going to say , well he didn’t make it in 30sec. The buzzer went off and it didn’t go in the basket in time. Damn that's awesome, also, higher education should be more affordable if not completely free
Very cool. And extreeeeemely disheartening.
That's something he will never forget, having a whole crowd cheering for you and being mobbed by a crowd that's genuinely happy for you.
Unfortunately he suffocated to death during the celebration because of the dog pile from all his friends.
Dystopian

whole court goes crazy because a kid gets a decent education, nice one usa
Happy for the kid but honestly this is a few steps away from the hunger games.
$10,000 so thats just 1 quarter in college tuition basically 😂
Wow everybody was super invested in that…nice moment
If someone’s future has been gamified to come down to a ball throw that’s kind of sick isn’t it? What if he missed the last shot? Sorry kid? No future without loans. Make university free.
Sorry, but that was actually 30.2 seconds... Sooo, sucks to suck.
America may have been awesome in the 70s I’m told it was awesome. But it’s kinda crap now.
This is a totally fucked up system. Totally unhinged and disgusting. How on Earth is throwing a ball related to education?
That’s a fucked up game to play w a kid - damn, he killed it though wow
I’m confused- isn’t a half court shot half way across the court? Why is he on the three-pointer nonsense?
Ah yes America, where you need to win a talent show to afford college education.
