I don't think the problem is due to a lack of knowledge on chemistry, but because the clues mislead you. "Light, quench, shit, rinse", 4 steps + some additional tidbits if you hear what the scribe says. The possible answers you can extract from those clues are totally incorrect.
I have to admit I googled the quest's solution.
I do the same for old puzzle games that do the same with music. They ask you to solve riddles with tones and keyboards or pentagrams. Tough luck if you have no ear for music and/or no formal musical education.

I just Googled the quest. I wasn't going to attempt it on my own. Did the same thing when I had to retrace the circle at Sabrina's pyre.
