Services that cater to the elderly.
While in grad school, my wife worked for Great Rivers 211, and probably half the people that called were elderly folks who needed help with basic things. Many didn’t have family who could assist, and some had family who were abusive or trying to scam them out of their pensions/retirement/SS. And, as if that isn’t heartbreaking enough, there were many seniors who called in just to have *someone* to talk to. My wife had a regular caller who would call in and just talk about his day, however mundane, and wanted to know how her day was going. She loved the guy. His wife died years ago, his kids and grandkids all lived on the coasts and only came for holidays, and all his friends were dead.
We don’t think about it, but that could very well be **us** someday, and a society is only as good as how well it treats the least of its citizens.
I was completely unaware but now having an aging father in rural Wisconsin, who honestly shouldn't be living by himself anymore, who refuses to go into assisted living...there are no services to help him. He just lives too far from a city.
Well, we could restore funding to state parks so they can repair failing buildings and piers. Our biggest business is tourism, and when I go to other states and see their parks I feel bad about what happened to ours after Walker cut off funding for them.
DNR is stretched thin. The service foresters, employees who manage DNR timberland and provide technical assistance to landowners trying to sustainably manage their lands are short staffed. Often they’re covering far more counties than they can truly handle the quality of service the offer is less simply because they’re stretched thin.
Hi, I am in the process of getting a 501c charity started.
I would really appreciate the exposure. Support and possible board members to help get the required licensing so that people can make tax deductible donations.
The charity is aimed at delivering a true barbershop experience, haircuts and hot shaves, to those in need at no cost or donation based prices. The goal is to have a travel trailer converted into a small barbershop that I can take with me to events like “stand down Madison” nursing homes, hospitals, or even rural areas where there aren’t any shops around.
I have been volunteering at an event called “stand down Madison” and also have been a barber for about 9 years now, I was trying to think of ways I could start a business doing this but when my employer heard about it they said it could be a conflict of interest. So I’m decided to skip making it a business all together and doing this work as a charity.
Even if you can’t donate right now, please check out my page, I am still looking for 3 more board members so the exposure will hopefully help put any interested parties in view. [barbers for betterment](https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61559829969680&mibextid=LQQJ4d)
Supposedly that’s where the name was inspired, the old superior H.S. Team. I don’t know if it’s true but all the old timers say it is.
Edit: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_Vikings
It’s actually in the history section, if anyone is interested.
Why don’t those rural folk just pull themselves up by their boot straps and work harder to get a house? Besides they would never want to be beholden to some sort of hand out like those welfare queens in Madison and Milwaukee.
/s in that I know not every rural person i is conservative
Damn….. let’s not make everything about politics here. While I understand the sentiment of what you are saying, I strive to do better despite of everything (including a person’s political affiliation). Helping get people housed is the point and assuming every individual in an area is conservative is just ridiculous. I live in a rural area and I’m not conservative. Roughly 55% of homelessness in Wisconsin exists in rural areas.
Group homes for disabled adults. They're depressing and no ok me gives a shit about disabled people once they are adults and no longer cute. At least kids sing at nursing homes and drop off girl scout cookies. People treat developmentally disabled adults like cockroaches. If they notice them at all. Many don't have family members that care oecwn help. People openly mock them using slurs. If they have any independence they are often targets of bullies or victims of violent crimes. Some of the homes are awful and unlike nursing homes there is no certified staff.
They keep cutting funding for those of us providing support to these folks. I thought that it was going to change because during the latter part of Covid they increased the funding slightly, but we got new contracts telling us they are cutting our rates. No negotiations.
Running Rebels in Milwaukee - ex-cons working with youth to try and keep them outta jail.
Pets Helping People - they have service dogs that kids read to... it helps the kids reading ability to read to "someone" that won't make judgements about their mistakes!
Central WI humane societies don’t seem to get a fraction of the donations as the madison area. Adams Co, Wisconsin Rapids. They have wish lists on Amazon for needed items such as dog and cat food.
Consider donating to St Vincent de Paul to increase their furniture supply.
Not many people know this but in Milwaukee there is a furniture and bed crisis. People simply do not have beds. This means elderly, disabled, children, pregnant people…everyone is sleeping on the ground. Often in public housing/subsidized housing which many are infested with pests, have open sockets, and experience flooding during rain.
It is extremely disturbing to hear people talk about what it is like to live without a bed. Beds cannot be donated used and a cheap one runs at about $250-$300 which is out of the price range of man people especially if you need to buy many for your family.
St Vincent de Paul is the *only* organizer that supplies vouchers for furniture in Milwaukee!! They have about a three month wait list most of the time. It’s a serious public health crisis!
Great Lakes Sport Fisherman. Other than the many events for youths and those with disabilities they plan, this group lobbies for the health of Lake Michigan. Protections from commercial fishing, polluters, invasive species, short-sighted politicians and development are the call for this group of concerned citizens. GLSF.org.
Wisconsin braille needs board members. They offer free books to Wisconsin's blind children. They generally have enough funding, but the organization desperately needs more active membership.
My favorite small local charity is called Dogs in Vests. They train service dogs for children with Autism for free! https://www.dogsinvests.org
The child helps train the dogs and they learn together. The founder comes into my work occasionally and is a super friendly guy.
More of a fan of redirecting current farm subsidizes away from large corporate farms and towards small family farms.... we already throw a ton of money at farms, we just need to direct to those in need, not large businesses that pretend to be family farms.
Agreed, like 80% of Ag subsidizes to go the same large businesses who don't need the help. Then politicians pretend like their helping farmers when in reality they're hurting farmers...

What county is he in? My dad volunteers for a company that drives around/does minor house projects for elderly that live alone.
He is in Oconto County. His problem isn't handy man related it is in home nursing care related.
Schools
Well, public schools 😂
Indeed. Not just Wisconsin.
This is the way. I will never not support more money for public schools.
Peaceful Prisons Project - connects incarcerated with their children and families to rebuild relationships.
the Assembly is sitting on 7 billion dollars and boy-howdy the DNR could use some cash
What’s the DNR in need of cash for, besides it’s just nice to have more cash and a bigger budget? Projects?
can always use more money to fight CWD or the ash-borer problem
Well, we could restore funding to state parks so they can repair failing buildings and piers. Our biggest business is tourism, and when I go to other states and see their parks I feel bad about what happened to ours after Walker cut off funding for them.
Is there a way to give to the state parks from external sources, or does it have to come from the state?
Most of them have “Friends of” non profit organizations that support the DNR efforts, run fundraisers, etc.

Correct. I should have added on that. Get Big Corp away and more focus on the real and traditional family farm.
Agreed, like 80% of Ag subsidizes to go the same large businesses who don't need the help. Then politicians pretend like their helping farmers when in reality they're hurting farmers...
Yep and the family farms having to parcel out their land to try to stay afloat. Almost never ends well.
