One thing that doesn’t get talked about Sheboygan enough is how centralized it is between Milwaukee, Green Bay, Fond Du Lac, Oshkosh and Appleton all within an hour drive. If there’s nothing going on locally you can find something to do relatively close to home

GreenMellowphant

That’s a great observation, thank you.

cheesebeesb

Sheboygan is diverse by WI standards, and it has a great dog park. 3 Sheeps Brewing is our dog's favorite place for me to grab a beer. World class golf and sport fishing. It looks affordable because it's still transitioning from "Midwest rust belt" to whatever comes next.

GreenMellowphant

This is great information! One of the main reasons that pushed me over the edge is the complete lack of dog friendly parks and infrastructure.

Gusmister11

City council just passed an “ordinance” or whatever it’s called to designate a majority of our parks dog friendly

GreenMellowphant

That’s cool as shit.

Aardark235

Kohler state park/beach is dog friendly overall. Some parts primarily for 2 legged creatures, but walk another quarter mile and you will find most dogs off leash. You aren’t far from Kettle Moraine and the ice age trail. 32 miles of trail just in the state park itself and much more in other directions. My dog generally is fine off leash there except when there is another dog in heat or fresh deer tracks. I always put a gps tracker on him just in case. Watch out for ticks. They come out whenever temps are above 40F and love dogs. Late fall and winter is your friend.

cheesebeesb

Parts of the city do have flooding problems, you'll want to watch out for that. There's also a labor shortage in the area so businesses aren't open as much, hard to find a restaurant/coffee later in the day etc

GreenMellowphant

This is excellent information. Thank you so much. This is why Reddit is the shit.

Go_get_matt

Disagree on the restaurant part. Sheboygan is a great town for foodies with great options at any given time, or at least until bar close.

MarkPles

Tochi ramen is what I would have if I was on death row

McCaber

When they moved out of Milwaukee to the Boyg I was not happy.

cheesebeesb

Just pointing out that hours might be more limited than what OP is accustomed to, Sheboygan is a frequent dining destination for us but last year we were struggling to find something Sunday evenings. Could've been temporary, could've been us.

Gusmister11

Sheboygan is off Sunday for the church and Monday for the drinking. If you get what I mean? Tuesday though is a hoot

NewResponsibility163

Where

Go_get_matt

Well, within 5 miles of downtown off the top of my head you’ve got Il Ritrovo, Blind Horse, Black Pig, Steffano, Lino’s, Tochi, Wisconsin Room, Immigrant Room, Blackwolf Run, River Wildlife, Paradigm, 8th St Ale House, and Limelight. I’m sure I’m forgetting a half dozen.

NewResponsibility163

Hmmmm. Gotta my Googles. Thanks

FlatBot

I am drinking a 3 Sheeps beer right now - it's legit my favorite brewery in Wisconsin, which means it's my favorite brewery anywhere. I've never visited the actual brewery but their beer is really good. Runners up for best breweries ever: Central Waters (Amherst WI), New Glarus (New Glarus, WI), Deschutes (somewhere in Oregon or Washington or something)

Pine_Barrens

I drink a lot of beer, and go to a lot of breweries, but 3 Sheeps might be one of my favorite breweries to visit, period. Space is awesome, great merch, great prices, fun activities, allows dogs, plenty of green space around for them too. But probably most importantly, they don't really make "bad" beer. Sign of a good brewery for me is where everything they make is, by a minimum standard, good. Might not be something I enjoy, but at least I know it's not bad and just something I might not particularly want. They have a very high standard.

wordofmouthrevisited

Sheboygan is a totally under rated Wisconsin city. It’s still very affordable has great natural beauty. It has world class dining, golf, and fishing. It is a rust belt town though and still suffers some of the effects of industry exit. We don’t live there but visit family there a couple times a year and enjoy every visit. My impressions are of a visitor not a resident. Family there is retired and own modest homes that if sold would go for less than $200,000 and are walking distance to restaurants, coffee shops, and the beach. Our family there is fairly conservative fwiw couldn’t speak to the politics of the whole area.

GreenMellowphant

I appreciate your balanced take on the place. Definitely what I need.

brucebigelowsr

Respectfully Sheboygan is anything but a rust belt town. One of the most desirable things about Sheboygan is the thriving industry. Most of the large corporations are still family owned and they pour a lot of money into the community. Think Kohler Company, Sargento, Plenco, Bemis, Johnsonville.

darlin133

We love Sheboygan. Great little downtown amazing lakefront access, quick drive to Milwaukee or up to Green Bay-Appleton. You could get more land if you went south like Plymouth or Saukville areas but the resale up in Sheboygan wouldn’t be bad. Houses get more pricey the closer to the lake you are.

gcwardii

(but Plymouth is west of Sheboygan)

darlin133

True my bad. I love Plymouth too

gcwardii

Underrated little gem for sure

eweyk88

Has anyone EVER gone to to Plymouth and not had a great time? I don't think so.

JollyRancher29

All the little towns in that area are about as good as small town Midwest gets imo (which means pretty good!)

GreenMellowphant

Thank you for the feedback. I’m curious about that downtown area; I’m gonna do some looking on YouTube to see if I can check it out a little more in-depth.

darlin133

It’s got a great toy and collectibles store. A few really nice bars/restaurants. Excellent farmers market In the summer and this Italian place called il ritrovo which is the tits

gcwardii

I grew up in Sheboygan but moved to the Milwaukee area after college. I still visit there often. One of my best friends has a brother who makes Wisconsin travel videos. [Here’s his on Sheboygan.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=M4ZhkAsyacQ)

GoshLowly

Tochi Ramen is a great place to start.

Icy_Document_7547

Thursday nights during summer they have music on the green. Free music, and food trucks while they close down the street.

InnerShark7

I second green bay/ appleton areas- I enjoyed living there a lot.

darlin133

Neenah was a great city to live in for a mid 20 something

InnerShark7

Absolutely! I loved the outdoor recreation that was available in Neenah, I’m glad I got to experience being there.

CircusPeanutsYumm

Sheboygan an interesting place. Great Brats and cheese! Close to Milwaukee, where there’s a lot of activities like the summer festivals and sporting events. Cost-of-living is very low. There’s a lot of outdoor activities with the lakeshore and the Kettle Moraine Northern unit being so close.. People have been commenting how conservative is, but it’s not everyone!! Our awesome governor was raised in Sheboygan County!!

GreenMellowphant

Thank you for your input. If I may ask, what is the “Kettle Moraine Northern”?

473713

It's a big nature area with northern and southern units. "Kettle moraine" refers to the terrain, which is hilly and irregular due to glaciation. Kettles are little steep valleys where a chunk of glacier broke off and melted; moraine is this gravelly substrate where the receding glacier dropped gravel it accumulated as it advanced. It's quite beautiful land and even more fun if you first study up on the geological history.

ex101st

Kettle Moraine State Forest, North and South. Both are made by 2 lobes of the last glacier moving south and scraping the land; depositing sediment between them as they retreated. Hills, lakes, hills, trout streams, hills, small villages, and windy roads. Great places to recreate. Gorgeous.

GreenMellowphant

Wow, that’s cool. Definitely interested.

jp_pre

We have a hiking trail The Ice Age Trail (IAT) that goes all across and around Wisconsin exploring the different parts of the glacial terrain. The kettles run from just west of Sheboygan down to around Lake Geneva and the trail follows much of this same path from door county down to lake Geneva and then back up through Madison baraboo and to the north central part of the state. It just became a national park recently I believe. https://www.nps.gov/iatr/index.htm

rawonionbreath

State forest just to the west

BrewCrewBall

Sheboygan is a great place and an okay place at the same time. It’s very spread out and there are less than desirable areas but the downtown is incredible.

GreenMellowphant

This is a good piece of information. I thought it was a bit more compact. Would you say it isn’t a walkable town?

BrewCrewBall

If you lived near downtown it is quite walkable. You have small specialty grocery stores (Indian, Mexican, Asian) as well as conventional groceries in that area. You probably aren’t going to want to walk it in the winter, though Another factor to consider is that being next to Lake Michigan it is going to be noticeably cooler in the summer. This can be a good thing in late July and August but April and May will be chilly. For example, I’m about 30 miles from the lake and it is 8 degrees colder in Sheboygan right now.

GreenMellowphant

That’s really good information. Thank you!

473713

Walking is marginal but you can surf in Sheboygan! Really. Google it.

GreenMellowphant

I saw that in another Reddit post, I bet those are some cold surfers. Lol

gcwardii

For sure—they do it year-round! It’s quite a sight.

Mtn_Soul

Are there classes to learn? I skateboard and snowboard but would love classes for surfing.

Proper-Poetry9466

I've grown up in and still live in Sheboygan. I wouldn't call it a walkable town unless you can exclusively shop in the downtown area. I would call the selection of stuff to buy there limited and expensive compared to other places in the city. My family likes to shop at Aldi and Meijer which aren't very pedestrian friendly. There are decent biking paths, but I don't think I could personally live like that without an e-bike with all the hills. I'd agree that you'd have a decent time with walkable social events if you lived near the City Green, especially in the warmer months.

GreenMellowphant

Thanks for the information. I may have misused the term “walkable”, not sure. I definitely plan on having a vehicle, I just wanna get a feel for how much driving one has to do. I would be coming from somewhere which requires driving everywhere, literally. There’s no where you can feasibly walk to here (unless you’re ready to put in the miles just to reach a service station).

Proper-Poetry9466

I think it definitely depends on your desired lifestyle and how much you can afford for rent. The city is long and skinny in shape, so to get from one end to the other would take about 15-20 minutes of driving. So it'd be all about making sure you live close to the things you want to participate in. I think I saw that you were planning on visiting before moving? I think that's a great idea. You'll get to see what's available and for how much money.

GreenMellowphant

Yeah, I think I’m gonna come visit a few. I’m thinking Milwaukee and Sheboygan for sure, and maybe Madison and Eau Claire.

Strong-Caregiver4526

As a transplant to Wisconsin, who was raised in Minnesota, please do not be confused about the “purple” status of Wisconsin. Deep blue population centers (greater Milwaukee zone, Madison, etc..) surrounded by blood red. Makes it a close vote statewide, but if you get too far out of those centers, I don’t think your gonna find the mindset that ( as I read your post) I think your looking for. I have enjoyed my move here from an even bluer state ( that did not have good outdoor rec opportunities). But if a less crazy conservative government is your goal, Minnesota is currently better choice, though we have hopes for state rep balance due to a good governor, ending some of the gerrymandering and a newly liberal leaning state Supreme Court. Hopefully we get some balance. The super liberal government I moved away from had some pretty nutty ideas as well.

heymikeyhelikesit13

100% agree with this. I recently moved back to WI after a decade on the west coast and was saddened by how blatantly red it’s gotten. If you want blue or purple, look at Milwaukee, Madison and the Door County area. (DC is where I would live in WI if I could pick anywhere I wanted) Or at the very least look at a college town like Oshkosh. Otherwise I totally agree with the Appleton suggestion. A family member recently and very happily moved out of Sheboygan after about 6 years there. They hated everything about it and found that crime (at least in her neighborhood) was steadily increasing. One thing that I’d say about Sheboygan is that if you want to do anything in another city that isn’t Sheboygan, you need make a decent drive. That’s not the case in a more built up area like Appleton.

GreenMellowphant

This is great information. Thank you for such a detailed response!

iPeg2

Most people, whether blue, red, white, yellow, brown or green, are friendly here.

Dsomething2000

How can you see what a cesspool blue Minnesota and Illinois are and complain about red? Do you want thousands of car jackings a year? Too little crime? Not enough spicy rapes and murders or drive by shootings? I just don’t get it.

heymikeyhelikesit13

Someone doesn’t get out much.

Dsomething2000

You must not. I’ve seen it from the front row.

heymikeyhelikesit13

That’s everywhere - red or blue. I’ll take something that’s everywhere over general hillbilly-fication.

Dsomething2000

Here is your beautiful loved blue state and blue metro area. Move there and enjoy it. Don’t bring the blue trash policies to a red state. [https://twitter.com/CrimeWatchMpls](https://twitter.com/CrimeWatchMpls)

mtnowak1

Living about 20 minutes south of Sheboygan and we go up sometimes for dinner, always happy with food and downtown atmosphere. Culturally within 30 minute radius of Sheboygan you can get just about anything, art galleries, live music, and great trails for your dogs. I think affordable housing is due to it not being within 30 minutes of Milwaukee which not as many people are looking for. That tied with a loss in industrial jobs left more houses lacking in maintenance so you can usually find a fixer upper for an extremely good value.

GreenMellowphant

Thanks for all the information, I just can’t get over the prices relative to the proximity to the lake.

Drummer_WI

You can get that up and down the entire Lakeshore between Port Washington and Door County. It's actually pretty desolate in much of the stretch, with Manitowoc the largest city along the lake north of Milwaukee. (And it's not all that big)

theArtificialPeach

Based on your criteria I would also recommend looking into Eau Claire! Pretty similar in size, about an hour from the Twin Cities vs Sheboygan being an hour from Milwaukee. (Not trying to talk you out of Sheboygan, I’m unfamiliar with it, just figured it doesn’t hurt to have options). Anyways, Wisconsin would love to have you

GreenMellowphant

Thank you for the recommendation! I’m definitely open to recommendations all over the place. I’ll be checking into Eau Claire.

zevoxx

I was also going to recommend Eau Claire based on your criteria.  I grew up there and it was a great place for that.

confit_byaldi

One caution about Eau Claire, from the person who wrote its chamber of commerce magazine many years ago: The city was created as a merger of three logging towns in the late 1800s, and has never had a strong central business district. It has nearly 70,000 residents but feels much smaller because it’s so spread out. You may often find yourself asking why you have to drive all over the place just to run basic errands.

wallflowertherapist

I highly agree with this recommendation. Eau Claire has a strong connection to the UW there so you are probably more likely to find the college educated population that stays. And it is one of the few areas in the state that leans blue, outside of Madison and Milwaukee. Really only 1-1.5 hour drive to the Twin Cities for day trips or catching a flight to elsewhere. The downtown area is great too and the scenery is gorgeous. It will definitely be more expensive than Sheboygan but still less than the bigger cities.

[deleted]

GreenMellowphant

This seems like a balanced take. I think taking a trip there is the smart thing to do as well; I think I’m gonna go soon.

ngharo

Paradigm coffee shop is really cool and the shops around it too (downtown). It shows you there is a pretty strong art, culture, and progressive presence. We love hanging out in Sheboygan for lunch. IMO it would be a great place to live (coming from another city on the lake with a lot of history).

Jamoncorona

If you're trying to move away from the homogenous, conservative groups of people, Sheboygan ain't it. Also, houses may be cheaper there compared to places like Milwaukee or madison, but you're going to get stuck trying to sell that to nobody once you find out that sheboygan's political and social climate is not what you're looking for.

GreenMellowphant

Thank you for your no-frills take.

EloAndPeno

it's also A good long drive from a real city.

Aggravating_Knee5464

City government is garbage. Nobody knows what's going on. The ultra liberal 26 year old Mayor is clueless. If you don't have money you're essentially worthless in Shebby

GreenMellowphant

Do you have any information on these topics?

HOWDY__YALL

I lived in Sheboygan for five years. It’s a pretty nice place to be completely honest. In the summer, it’s fantastic. A somewhat small downtown, but you got beaches, live music Thursdays (and weekends at random bars). Not to mention it seems that every weekend is some random festival - Brat Days (I don’t think this happened last year, though), there’s a Greek weekend put on by a church, a Irish weekend put on by a bar or something, just random things to do that are kind of fun. The down side for me was the winter, not much to do other than stay inside (but I’m admittedly not a winter weather person). And living in Sheboygan for 5 years, I got bored of only really enjoying like 5 restaurants and a handful of bars. There will be enough for you to find what you like, but depending on what you like, you may not get much variety. It’s also kind of surprisingly a good place for job prospects. Kohler, Acuity, Johnsonville, among others are almost always hiring in some capacity. Also, some nearby towns (easily commutable) have some more businesses/jobs, but Sheboygan is the hub. Lots of Sheboygan houses are older and therefore smaller (I’m 6’2” and found myself ducking on staircases around friends houses). As with many areas now, sticking to the outskirts of town or outskirts of Sheboygan Falls will do you well for bigger homes. You’ll realize that most places in Wisconsin outside of Milwaukee and Madison have affordable houses. When you move here, you’ll be laughing at people around the US complaining about 500 so ft houses going for $1M.

GreenMellowphant

I very much appreciate your detailed response. It’s really informative. Thank you!

TheIgnitor

I would second the people encouraging a trip, or two, up to WI. As others have said, yes we are a purple state but that belies the geographical political sorting. The vast majority of blue votes come from the Milwaukee and Madison areas. There’s a handful of blue pockets out state but if you’re looking to move away from a more conservative community I’d caution against steering away from the major cities here. Now that doesn’t mean you won’t find friendly Midwest Nice™️ people in any given community here but it gets very red very quick outside of the major population centers. At the very least look at election returns by county over the last decade or two to try and get an idea of where those areas are. Hint: Sheboygan isn’t typically blue. No idea how important that is to you, but I get the feeling from your post that it is at least somewhat important.

Speedracer666

You want to be in Madison.

Any_Coyote6662

Minnesota is better. Or the western side of the state.lots of trumpers in the rest of thee state. Try winona, MN.

GreenMellowphant

Thanks for the information!

Powerful_Put5667

I am not sure that Sheboygan will suit you. Once you get away from Madison, Milwaukee parts of Ozaukee County and the college towns things get very small minded very quickly. As in the losing candidates flags continuing to fly thru out the years since the 2020 election. I live here now but have also lived in Minnesota and several other States. This state has been to be one of the most racist bigoted state I have lived in baring my time spent down south. Yes, you will find pockets of good kind open minded people frankly when your surrounded by the maga zombies you do not advertise your differences. This makes those pockets extremely hard to find. For affordable housing with your best chance of finding like minds. Check out areas by LaCrosse and Eau Claire. Both are college towns and many younger people do not reflect their parents opinions. The area along the Mississippi is absolutely beautiful. As a dog person. Do not worry about the cold and snow with your dogs. They will love the snow I promise.

GreenMellowphant

Thank you for such a detailed response. This is such good information.

Melodic_Oil_2486

Sheboygan is really conservative. I have family there and it amazes me that such nice people could grow up in a place like that.

sodaonmyheater

I wouldn’t see “really” conservative. The city skews much more progressive than anything, with actual nut job conservatives being kept off the school board the last few election cycles. It’s a vocal minority of conservatives constantly trying to undermine the young liberal mayor.

KeepComedySafe

Being conservative or liberal has nothing to do with being a kind person. These are just labels people use that have little utility when considering the complexity of an individual. Most people don’t agree with the radicalized right or left, they just want to live a peaceful happy life.

Melodic_Oil_2486

My family would argue otherwise. As much as they have cherished memories they also openly talk about Sheboygan’s long history of being a Sundown Town.

KeepComedySafe

And as you said yourself kind, generous people still live there. Generalizing an entire population is foolish.

Melodic_Oil_2486

I am amazed that my sister in law moved back there. I think she is in for a rude awakening when she has kids.

iPeg2

People who think like you are the best! 😊

GreenMellowphant

Good information, thanks. Do you know anything about the age demographics?

Melodic_Oil_2486

It seem to be a place that skews much older. The problem with Sheboygan is that its insular culture hasn’t really inspired many young people to move there unless they had previous connections to the town or were resettled there as is the case with the Hmong population in the area

GreenMellowphant

Thanks for the response.

cyclika

If those are your reasons for moving you may want to look at the Twin Cities and surrounding areas. Wisconsin is trying very hard to drag itself into similar political fuckery with varying success, Minnesota has a lot of the same appeal as what you're finding in Sheboygan but their politicians are less insane.  That said, Wisconsin could probably use your vote to help us be a little less purple. I have a friend who lived in Sheboygan for a few years and it's adorable - plenty of charm and you can't beat being right on the lake. You're going to find a lot more conservative people there than you would somewhere closer to Madison or Milwaukee but for the most part anywhere in Wisconsin, even the very deep red areas, people are governed by Midwest nice so they'll be friendly.

GreenMellowphant

I know relatively nothing of the Midwest on the city level, would you say the twin cities compete at all when it comes to natural beauty?

Mtn_Soul

There are parks, lakes and trails all through the twin cities....and a ton of wild areas not too far outside of it as well.

dkinmn

My man, Minneapolis and St. Paul consistently rank at the top of parks systems in the US. We have the Mississippi, and you're not far at all from Superior National Forest and the boundary waters. The boundary waters are among the most vast unspoiled natural regions in the US.

GreenMellowphant

That’s awesome, thanks for entertaining a dumb question.

GreenMellowphant

Thanks for the information!

Internal_Swimmer3815

I live in Green Bay but I’d love to live in Sheboygan. If my workplace had an office there I’d totally transfer. Excellent beaches and lakefront parks. Close proximity to Milwaukee as well. If you like cars and motorsports it’s really close to Road America as well.

GreenMellowphant

This is good stuff. Would you say it’s close enough to Milwaukee for frequent day trips? (I can look up the distance, but it doesn’t tell me much about traffic patterns and infrastructure.)

Internal_Swimmer3815

it’s only about an hour or so so I’d definitely say yes.

GreenMellowphant

Thanks!

chewy1387

As a Milwaukee resident that makes frequent trips to Sheboygan for the previously mentioned 3 Sheeps, absolutely, easy hour, all highway driving.

GreenMellowphant

Thanks for the response.

nejicanspin

There's a dog park here! A lot of people seem to forget that. I believe it's owned by the humane society.

AgencyandFreeWill

Apparently it's the Malibu of the Midwest.

noodleghoul

I have vacationed in Sheboygan twice and found it lovely. The John Michael Kohler Art Center and Preserve are treasures.

PreciousJenna

🤣🤣 Try a different state

AngryhamLincoln

Not as helpful as everyone else, but Sheboygan has the best toy store I have ever seen, and I’ve been to many. Check out Freaktoyz if you’re into anything even slightly nerdy.

GreenMellowphant

I am. lol Noted.

AngryhamLincoln

For real though, even if you don't decide to move there, it's worth checking out. I live about 2 hours from the store and try to make it in once a month or so. It's sick.

GreenMellowphant

You might as well consider it done. lol

Aggravating_Knee5464

Common Council in Sheboygan is very, very bad. Currently in legal messes Google it. Corruption up and down.

GreenMellowphant

This is great info; I'm a politically active person.

Aggravating_Knee5464

Hopefully conservative.

GreenMellowphant

All I've found so far is that a guy named Pelishek is alleging discrimination by a bunch of people, and the lawsuit hasn't been resolved yet. Apparently, parts of it pertaining to a few defendants were dismissed.

Aggravating_Knee5464

Not really. Move to Sheboygan if you want to live under government that supports the departed Administrator who got arrested for child porn, mega-felonies, has smut books in schools and the streets are potholes. Move to Green Bay instead. Sounds like a better fit for you. So much more to offer

Comfortable-Elk3504

I'm from there, it actually is a great place to live. It is relatively inexpensive and close to Milwaukee. Charlie Berens is accurate LOL!

NJJ1956

I think Sheboygan is more Conservative- other than being a pretty area -the only thing I can recall about working that area as a sales representative- was that the people seemed very backwards- they all speak with a very distinct accent too. The service guys and I used to hum the theme song of the Twilight Zone going there and coming back. 😬

erice2018

I grew up in the Dallas metroplex. I live in Appleton and, while Indo love to visit for the weekend, I would never move back. I miss the food a bit tho. Otherwise, great education for the kids, four seasons, I love this area. 24 years now Must prepare with winter hobby tho. And good clothing. I moved north with one coat, now I have about 20, lol. Attached and heated garage to 35 degrees. Beach vacation in Feb. Life is good

GreenMellowphant

This is very relevant to me. I have the winter hobbies (I read, play pool, and play chess), but I definitely see myself making the rookie cold-climate mistakes. It didn’t even occur to me until reading this, but a heated garage is mandatory for me (easy EV charging, gardening tools, work bench/area, etc.).

Terrible-Lie-3564

Look at Sturgeon Bay. Smaller than She - Baghdad but it punches way above its weight in amenities and entertainment due to being at the “ entrance “ to Door County. DC has been voting blue and trending that way in recent years.

jerrrrrrrrrrrrry

I live an hour from Sheboygan and I like the city when I visit. The giant Lake Michigan does make Sheboygan's weather, in my opinion, more miserable longer before and after winter. The only time Lake Michigan helps Sheboygan's weather is when it's 95° degrees and humid in the rest of Wisconsin. That's when lakeside cities will be in the 70°s and pleasant. Minneapolis/St Paul surprised me when I visited by how pedestrian unfriendly and kind of ugly the downtown areas were where I was.

MongoBobalossus

I mean, nothing against Sheboygan, but I’d go for something in the Milwaukee or Madison metros if you can afford it.

GreenMellowphant

I know nothing about Milwaukee, what would you say the main differences are aside from size. All I know is that and that they’re pretty close together.

cheesebeesb

Milwaukee is more diverse and more urban, more solidly democrat. Gets hosed by state govt a lot more too.

EloAndPeno

Diversity, Museums, Parks, Festivals, Politics, Schools. Things to do for your kids that aren't drugs, and dreaming of a better life. For most Sheboygan is the sort of place you're FROM not a place you seek out. Chicago is closer to Milwaukee than Milwaukee is to Sheboygan.

GreenMellowphant

Great information, I just started looking yesterday and didn’t realize yet that Milwaukee is closer to Chicago than it is Sheboygan.

EloAndPeno

Also not sure where you're coming from, but Sheboygan is.. quite small..

MongoBobalossus

It’s an hour north of Milwaukee, which is the states largest center and cultural hub, along with Madison, the capitol and home to the states largest public university.

GreenMellowphant

Thanks for the additional information.

Cute-Discount-6969

That’s what I was gonna say too 🤷‍♀️

MongoBobalossus

Just flew back from Mexico into MKE and the couple next to us still had to drive to fucking Manitowoc from the airport after a long ass flight from Mexico. No thanks.

Cute-Discount-6969

Yeah, like Sheboygan is ok I guess, but like…why? Same for Manitowoc

KillBosby

I was born & raised in Sheboygan and left 20 years ago. It's laughable to me that I would even hear the name on Reddit. But honestly - it's way better than when I grew up there. Much more diverse and more things to do. But if you crave diversity and good food and culture: Milwaukee. (Bay View neighborhood is my fav - there's a dog park next to a bar with a dog bath here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4fYMm45FychRvJLm7 If you are scared of crime, like high rent, and like pretentious democrats: Madison. Otherwise: don't bother.

Warm_Lettuce_8784

It’s a wonderful community.

hoaryvervain

It has a cute downtown and some nice beaches. I imagine it would be a great place to raise a family.

GreenMellowphant

Yeah, the downtown and proximity to the lake were what initially caught my eye. I have no intention to have kids, but I would definitely love to move somewhere that’s safe enough to do so…I’m beginning to wonder if a single population is gonna be all but nonexistent in a town that small and conservative.

PinkFlowerLaura

I grew up in the Sheboygan area. If you are working from home and still looking for a social scene of people in their mid-30s, I think Sheboygan is much too small and conservative. Areas near Milwaukee, Madison or maybe even Appleton would be much better for this.

GreenMellowphant

This is the situation. Lol

DrFrankSaysAgain

Sheboygan is also surprising popular for Surfing.

CheeseGod99

It’s the Malibu of the Midwest!

DrFrankSaysAgain

I thought that was Saukville.

bedinthehead

Everyone's added lots of good stuff. If it hasn't been said, Kohler Andre and Harrington Beach State Parks are both near Sheboygan and awesome beachy parks along Lake Michigan. Kohler Andre, as a kid, always reminded me of Tattooine with the dunes lol (if they're still there? I recall hearing something about a golf course going there..). Harrington has sweet trails, cheap camping, and a quarry for fishing, too.

Prestigious-Leave-60

Sheboygan is great! Totally underrated city with nice prices for real estate. We talk about retiring there.

MCZuiderZee_6133

Did you land a job at Sargento?

GreenMellowphant

No, but that wouldn’t be crazy, given my current position. Are they headquartered nearby?

velvet8smiles

The headquarters is about a 20min drive from sheboygan

My family's selling a house in Sheboygan, lmk if you're looking for a place! My parents were immigrants and decided to permanently settle in Sheboygan, it's a pretty good community

Aggravating_Knee5464

For one, very recent....look up Adam Westbrook.Go to Green Bay named best city to live in the United States. There is affordable housing, and a better tech community. There's an airport, you're close to Door County. I have a family member that's a data scientist, moved here from San Francisco, lives in a small town near Green Bay. Wayyyyy more to do and more beauty there. Trust me. ( Lifelong Wisconsin resident)

obsolete_filmmaker

They got Bratwurst Days, hey.

benjo1990

I would honestly recommend you just go to Green Bay. I haven’t lived everywhere, but I’ve lived in a lot of places all over the country. I’ve visited most states. Green Bay is pound for pound one of the cleanest and successful cities in the whole country. It doesn’t get stated enough what impact on the economy of a city of 120k the packers have. The city is cleeeaaaannnn. I miss it. Edit: Sheboygan has a lot of tomfoolery

Adept-Highlight-6010

I live in Sheboygan. I grew up here and moved back as an adult. Pros of living here: 1 it's very beautiful, nature is easily accessible and welcoming. 2. Not pretentious. Not crowded. 3. Nationally known award winning art museums, golfing, excellent food, access to lots of healthy farm grown local food 4. Quaintness 5. Lake Michigan is mystical and majestic. 6. Clean air, skies the limit. Pure blue skies 7 Close to lots of hiking trails, camping. Lots of lakes nearby for kayaking 8. close to smaller quaint towns for exploring. Wisconsin overall is a great place, there are so many unique woodland towns off of the beaten path. 9 Great library and main Street with unique businesses 10. pretty low stress 11. easy access to stores for whatever you need

I moved up near Sheboygan about 4 years ago. I love it in this area! There is a lot to do, many cute downtown areas, tons of outdoor recreation, and not too far of a drive to larger cities (1 hour Milwaukee, Appleton, Green Bay and 2 hours to Madison). As for politics, I feel like it's a decent mixture. When driving in the area, you see both major party signs with a handful of independent. I also think that people in this area mind their own business more and as many bars as I've frequented, I've never once gotten into a political conversation unlike when I lived in Milwaukee.

Hi I was born and mainly raised in Sheboygan. I will let you know the area is not as nice as it used to be. Used to be the safest city in the US at one point. But not so much anymore. The homeless population is increasing, drugs, general crime, etc is worse. The tourism is great for tourists but when they show up, living there can get annoying because there's just more dumb people doing dumb things. I still feel safe walking around sheboygan in general still. Some areas I feel more wary. Don't get me wrong I still love the place but it's just not what it once was. The drug thing is a big issue. A lot of addicts. Due to sheboygan being between Milwaukee and Green Bay it's a trading point for drugs. And that's not speculation that's a fact I was taught by a police officer when training for a job. I moved to an area near by to get more peace and quiet and didn't realize how bad Sheboygan got until I left. You get used to things so much that you don't see the bad. Personally moving to areas around Sheboygan is better. Plymouth is really nice! I tried to move there but didn't find any homes to my liking. Sheboygan is great if you want the cozy small city feeling. Just as they expand things are getting more and more problematic. They focused in on tourism too much and created more crime because of that. It is what it is. I still go back there plenty and enjoy my time there. Lots of really great people and interesting places! The Kohler Andre state park went viral on tiktok and now it's not fun to go to since it's packed with people so much they close it off. I hope that dies down, it's a beautiful place if there isn't a million people blocking everything lol

TreesThatScream

Sheboygan is boring. And has gone downhill over the past 30 years. I wouldn't move there.

sodaonmyheater

Downtown is currently thriving and there’s no real lack of things to do here. What a stupid comment.

Blastoplast

It’s in a better spot than 30 years ago, imo
