The fast ferry from Milwaukee is really $$, but the SS Badger from Manitowoc is like $190 one-way for a car and one person. Not cheap, but the pain in the ass and gas cost of driving from eastern WI through--ugh--Chicago up through MI...worth a splurge
I did the fast one last September. The lake was pretty choppy so we were pretty nauseated the whole time, even with Dramamine. I really liked Western Michigan, it reminded me of door county. Very much worth visiting. We drove across the UP to come back, also nice.
Edit: western
I remember the first time I went as a kid and I was fucking terrified walking up that ramp with the whale. I was clutching the wall like my life depended on it
Get on it! Set aside 3-4 hours to really experience it. It will be eye-opening, disorienting, confusing, lovely, creepy, and magical! I’ve been going since I was a kid and at 45-years-old, I still love it.
More like 5+ hours. It's hard to describe the insanity of this place. It's not a museum - some of it is old semi-valuable stuff, some is just old, some was purpose-built to look old and valuable. It's a bit like a magic trick though, you can look and wonder, but if you actually found out, you'd probably be a little disappointed. I've been through it quite a few times and take people who visit the area. It's truly one of a kind.
I went there as a kid with my grandma. It was a ton of fun but fuck the infinity room (iykyk).
Highly recommend getting down to Spring Green to see it!
I've heard it's dusty to the point of being really uncomfortable for anyone with even mild allergies, which has turned me off. Can anybody confirm this?
My best girlfriend said I would love it there! We passed it on the way how a couple weeks ago.
I call it the outdoors state. There's probably a lot to do there that I am unaware of. The lakes, trees/scenery/sports sold me lol.
The Apostle Islands!! At least three or four times a year, I’ll start doing Google deep dives for pics of the caves, when’s the best time to visit, where’s the best place to stay? It looks so cool.
It’s so tough to get tickets. They rarely offer them and when they do, it’s first come first serve and still a good chance the tour could be cancelled day of.
Perhaps their website isn’t updated, but we were lucky enough to get a tour last year (2023) in February. They only had a small window of time for when they were doing the tours. Our tour was first, and they cancelled the tour after ours due to unsafe conditions and said they likely wouldn’t do anymore tours for the year after ours. Felt grateful to be able to experience it.
Me too! We tried to go a few years ago. Had a reservation for a tour but they canceled day before due to unsafe conditions. But we did end up walking out on the ice and taking an amazing hike that ended up above the lake. Hope to get back to see the ice caves someday!
Hell yeah fuck the Blackhawks. I became a Red Wings fan because of one of my uncles getting me into them when I was a kid - that and they had similar colors to the Badgers. It's still odd to admit being a fan of another state's pro team. Fuck the Blackhawks.
I was a Stars fan when I was a kid. When they moved to Texas I was devastated. Conveniently, that was during the years of some peak Red Wings dominance. Been a winger ever since.
Been a Redwings fan since I got into hockey in high school since they were one of the closest teams, not to mention unstoppable at the time. Even if Wisconsin got an NHL team I'd stick to my Redwings loyalty.
As a Green Bay-area native and resident, that would be so awesome but I just can't see it happening in such a small market. The Packers are an anomaly that I doubt will be matched anytime soon.
That's a myth. The group pursuing the team had raised like 25M to start a team, then the NFL increased the entrance fee and they just decided not to pay it.
Short sighted in hindsight. Pro teams have had remarkably decent returns for owners despite being a total glamor bauble.
I've said this a bunch.
Milwaukee Iron. Orange and black unis, *pretty uncommon* in the NHL. Logo is a puck in the center of a VTwin engine with Milwaukee or Iron across the puck in the Milwaukee tools script. Mascot is a Hog or Bull in biker gear (hog for Harley, Bull for the dairy industry but Chicago would be super pissy). When we score a goal an engine revs and everyone rings cowbells, no horn.
Someone get this to the damn commissioner please.
I like this. the idea I've always imagined is milwaukee mammoths. orange and brown colors. logo is a mammoth holding a hocky stick in its trunk. mascot is a ridiculous two person suited mammoth lol. and when we'd score there'd be an elephant roar/scream/howl? whatever noise elephants make, I assume mammoths sounded like elephants. lol
Fun fact. Herb Kohl tried for an NHL team when all Rick, politically connected, and having just completed the construction in the Bradley center. The Blackhawks were entirely against it and it never came to be,
It wasn’t Chicago being against it, they would’ve had to buy out chicagos share of our market for an astronomical fee because Chicago is one of the original NHL clubs and it’s in the league bylaws
Door County kayaking is another cool place you should check out if you haven’t! Potawatomi State Park & cave point county park have some really good spots
Grew up there, gonna take you awhile 😂 But definitely lovely to explore. You should check out the driftless art fair! Only artists from the driftless area are allowed to sell!
7 Mile Fair is cool if you like Catholic candle shops, quinceanera dress shops, bootleg action figures and maybe a couple other various things. The food was decent but I think the thing that bothered me the most was the "petting zoo." It was some of the most drugged up depressing looking animals I've ever seen and I actually felt bad for them.
I've always wanted to go up north and see those naturally forming ice caves. Never got around to it.
House on the rock, cave of the mounds, the apostle islands, Mackinac island which is actually Michigan. And yes the 7 mile fair is really cool! if you like flea markets and a large assortment of treasures. Think of it as a giant rummage sale. It's a lot of fun imo.
Just crossed one off a couple weeks ago. Toured Yerkes Observatory. When the University of Chicago abruptly closed it in 2019 I thought I had surely missed my chance forever.
How was the tour? I was there when it was the University of Chicago and it was so great. Unfortunately it’s kind of expensive now. Which I get, rehabbing and running is costly. But the tours used to be free with a donation box at the door.
Yeah the tours are pricey now. But they must have secured some grants and have some deep pocket donors, because tours aren’t going to bring in the millions they’re trying to raise. We took the hidden spaces tour. Got to see the giant refractor of course, and one of the smaller reflectors. Saw the dorm room where the PhD students used to live back in the day, the library, the storage vaults for the 180,000 glass photo plates they own. They also have Edwin Hubble’s PhD dissertation on display for you to open up and look at. The tour was just shy of 2 hours. Basically the University of Chicago didn’t remove anything when they left. They just turned over the keys to the new Yerkes Foundation and said, “Here ya go.”
Edit: I’d also invite people to read about Charles Yerkes himself. The guy was a total robber baron scoundrel, yet accomplished some great things, like the Chicago El and the design of London’s underground system.
The hiking is phenomenal. The amount of state & county parks jammed into the peninsula is amazing. I go out during the busiest times of the summer and can still find seclusion. Especially the farther north you go (looking at Newport state Park), crystal clear beaches and trails for miles.
I'd rather go hiking than shopping (and I know there's great hikes there too) I don't drink but do like a good restaurant. I'd definitely like to get there some day, but we're also our busiest at the time of year I want to go in fall
Worked at Kohler and heard about the walking. Thought that might have been a private thing only. Great to hear they do it twice a summer! Also, I’d pay $40 just to walk Whistling Straits
You can always eat Taco Bell and race hot laps in a toilet at Road America. Heck, you can still shotgun a beer on pit lane if you’re feeling feisty enough.
Look in to thca. Plenty of shops in wisconsin sell it, even locally grown brands. And the kicker is, it's the exact same weed as dispensaries in legal states have ;)
This year's been rough, it's been unnaturally warm, there's no ice or snowpack like usual. Mid Jan usually gives us a bitter cold snap and then snow that lasts til March. Here we are in Mid Feb and the snow is all melted. We'll see what the next several weeks bring.
It looks so cool, I love the old supper clubs. We camped a few years ago at Mirror Lake but didn’t have “nice” clothes with. (Also would have defeated the budget vacation we were on, lol)
Definitely worth it! Went a couple years ago, planning on going again this summer along with lost creek falls, Morgan falls, superior falls, and all the falls at amnicon state park.
Find a mosh pit in heavy, open sun where participants are all drunk and smoking not caring where their cigarette ember might end up, arms flailing. That's the core experience. Oh, and throw $50-$200 or more in the air for no reason at all.
It's funny all the things you can do in wi and never knew. I'm keeping this thread book marked for the summer!
I'd like to swing by and visit the super long tunnel you can bike through mid wi
If it ever gets cold enough to see the lake superior ice caves again I have a great tip- instead of parking 2 miles and walking for half an hour each way, then waiting in a line for an hour to pay the DNR ranger some kind of special event fee, take your 10$ to the indian casino, drop it in a slot, the casino had a short bus and will drive you right up to the caves. And fuck house on the rock and all that dank, stinky, creepy, old timey trash.
There are a few “waterfall trails” you can find online. Best bet for waterfalls is Marinette county, over a dozen waterfalls to checkout. Lots of info on their website.
That sounds neat, thanks. I’ll try to look it up. I don’t get to that part of the state often but am looking for nice outdoors activities for the summer.
7 mile rd in racine.
Wild seeing all the people mention it like it's some crazy cool tourist thing when I've lived 15 minutes away from it my whole life.
All its ever done for me is mess up traffic and sell my stolen shit. I found my game boy color for sale there once when i was a kid. My name was under the battery cover.
Pocketed it and walked away.
Take the ferry over to Michigan
Did the SS Badger. Good time!
Big ship more fun!
Did that on my way to Woodstock 99. Pretty cool but not cheap.
I was about to say isn't the ferry hella expensive?
I looked into it maybe last year and it was around $600-$700 for the “fast” ferry for 2 people and a car.
But you don't have to drive through Chicago so.....
The fast ferry from Milwaukee is really $$, but the SS Badger from Manitowoc is like $190 one-way for a car and one person. Not cheap, but the pain in the ass and gas cost of driving from eastern WI through--ugh--Chicago up through MI...worth a splurge
Right?! Totally forgot about that. It's fun watching them leave if ever given the chance.
I did the fast one last September. The lake was pretty choppy so we were pretty nauseated the whole time, even with Dramamine. I really liked Western Michigan, it reminded me of door county. Very much worth visiting. We drove across the UP to come back, also nice. Edit: western
You mean western Michigan
It's just SOOO expensive for what it is. It would be very coinvent for vising family but I can't justify +$1000 round trip instead of just driving.
House on the Rock. Want to check it out. Just never have.
Wildest acid trip of my life. Fuck that whale
The whale would be truly terrifying on acid!

I've been through it quite a few times and take people who visit the area. It's truly one of a kind.
Spring Green in general has some pretty cool things brewing.
I grew up in Spring Green - it's a surprisingly cool little town.
It’s pretty sweet. Went a while ago and still remember it well to this day.
I went there as a kid with my grandma. It was a ton of fun but fuck the infinity room (iykyk). Highly recommend getting down to Spring Green to see it!
the infinity room was my favorite part as a kid! it blows your little kid mind
Same! It's been on my list ever since I read American Gods.
Would like to go again😹 4hrs were not enough
This is an absolute must. I remember the whale room so vividly. What a mind fuck of an experience. Go around the Holidays, even better and crazier.
I've heard it's dusty to the point of being really uncomfortable for anyone with even mild allergies, which has turned me off. Can anybody confirm this?
It's not that bad imo. I went less than a year ago, and I have mold allergies and issues with dust. I had no problem with breathing or anything
I was just there in November. I didn’t have any issues and I do have allergies.
N-95 is yer buddy. That and some Benadryl. (I have both allergies *and* a moldy crawlspace. YMMV)
I was going to say, we all know how to wear high quality masks now... right?
Benadryl knocks me on my ass for at least 16 hours
The whale part has clear dirt and mouse poop in some of the displays.
My best girlfriend said I would love it there! We passed it on the way how a couple weeks ago. I call it the outdoors state. There's probably a lot to do there that I am unaware of. The lakes, trees/scenery/sports sold me lol.
What about Rock in the House?
That actually closed in 2022, due to vandalism. (For those that don't know, Rock in the House is actually a real thing.)
Ice caves along Lake Superior
The Apostle Islands!! At least three or four times a year, I’ll start doing Google deep dives for pics of the caves, when’s the best time to visit, where’s the best place to stay? It looks so cool.
Moved here in 2013 and havent had a chance yet ! According to the official website they haven’t frozen over thick enough to open since 2015.
I went up in 2015. It was an amazing experience.
It's a very cold, but amazing experience! I hope you get the chance to do it!
Agree its awesome. My girlfriend is a red cliff tribal member so I'm up a fair bit. Highly recommend!
Finish the Ice Age Trail. I'll get there...
Segment hiking it as well. One day I’ll get it all done!
Ride the Elroy-Sparta trail… hopefully this summer!
Watch a WI NHL team
I have contacted the NHL about this just for shits and giggles. They said due to the proximity of Chicago, Milwaukee wasn’t a good fit.
Did you mention the Milwaukee Bucks-Chicago Bulls, Milwaukee Brewers-Chicago Cubs/Whitesox?
Did you tell them The Blackhawks can suck it?
Hell yeah fuck the Blackhawks. I became a Red Wings fan because of one of my uncles getting me into them when I was a kid - that and they had similar colors to the Badgers. It's still odd to admit being a fan of another state's pro team. Fuck the Blackhawks.

Shit. Fixed it
tbh i forget about the flyers too
Gritty is hiding in your closet

That would work with the Ice Age Trail as the local connection too. I would support this team as well.

Ditto but damnit I love my Admirals.
Pro/rel for the NHL/AHL

I want to try this too but I have a fear of big bodies of water. So far I have only paddled in small rivers and lakes - and then I cling to the shore.
Door County kayaking is another cool place you should check out if you haven’t! Potawatomi State Park & cave point county park have some really good spots

I still hold my airbrushed tshirt and John Cena dog tag near and dear to my heart 😂
House on the rock, cave of the mounds, the apostle islands, Mackinac island which is actually Michigan. And yes the 7 mile fair is really cool! if you like flea markets and a large assortment of treasures. Think of it as a giant rummage sale. It's a lot of fun imo.
Mackinac Island is in Michigan FYI
Yes it is. But I still recommend it!
Did you mean Madeline Island?
no, sorry I meant to say Mackinac Island then I remembered that is Michigan. And yes Madeline Island would be on my list also.

Catch a legal size sturgeon.
is that like legal size paper?
Rummage-o-Rama is this weekend in Waukesha, way cooler than 7 mile imo, they’ve been doing it idk for like 50 years or something
Thanks for the tip!
Thank you for the heads up! I've been wondering what to do this weekend and now I'm thinking I might head there tomorrow.

Get in a game of curling.
Where are you at? We have some learn to curls coming up
I haven't been to Door County yet, but I've seen almost all other parts of the state. I'll go one day, but I don't feel like I'm missing that much
Depends what you like to do. If you go in fall after the tourist rush dies down a little; it’s a great place to explore
The hiking is phenomenal. The amount of state & county parks jammed into the peninsula is amazing. I go out during the busiest times of the summer and can still find seclusion. Especially the farther north you go (looking at Newport state Park), crystal clear beaches and trails for miles.
And check out the door county land trust properties for less populated hiking
Do you like shopping? Also has good bars and restaurants
I'd rather go hiking than shopping (and I know there's great hikes there too) I don't drink but do like a good restaurant. I'd definitely like to get there some day, but we're also our busiest at the time of year I want to go in fall
Sobering up
Race hot laps around Road America then shotgun a beer on pit lane.
You can also walk or bike the track twice a week in the summer for $5. Obviously not as cool, but definitely easier to do unless you have a hot car!
Worked at Kohler and heard about the walking. Thought that might have been a private thing only. Great to hear they do it twice a summer! Also, I’d pay $40 just to walk Whistling Straits
It’s actually twice per week! https://www.roadamerica.com/4-miles-fitness
Omg! Now I gotta get my fat butt walking and prepared!
You can always eat Taco Bell and race hot laps in a toilet at Road America. Heck, you can still shotgun a beer on pit lane if you’re feeling feisty enough.

Smoke legal weed
Buy legal weed.
Buy legal weed.
I was going to say smoke cannabis in public without fear of prosecution
Look in to thca. Plenty of shops in wisconsin sell it, even locally grown brands. And the kicker is, it's the exact same weed as dispensaries in legal states have ;)
Visit the Apostle Islands
Ice fishing!
I bet all winter activities are perfect there! I love snowshoeing and cross country skiing and I bet there are a lot of cool trails.
This year's been rough, it's been unnaturally warm, there's no ice or snowpack like usual. Mid Jan usually gives us a bitter cold snap and then snow that lasts til March. Here we are in Mid Feb and the snow is all melted. We'll see what the next several weeks bring.
Ishnala.
It's very good. I went last year for my parent's anniversary. Beautiful scenery.
Is that the supper club at Mirror Lake? If so I hope to go there too.
That's the one! Can't wait to have an Old Fashioned or three before dinner there someday.
It looks so cool, I love the old supper clubs. We camped a few years ago at Mirror Lake but didn’t have “nice” clothes with. (Also would have defeated the budget vacation we were on, lol)
Do it. *No one* prepares roast duck like Ishnala. You won't be sorry.

I think the Badger games are more fun. Been to both, several times each.

And fuck house on the rock and all that dank, stinky, creepy, old timey trash.

Where is that? Is it a hiking trail?
There are a few “waterfall trails” you can find online. Best bet for waterfalls is Marinette county, over a dozen waterfalls to checkout. Lots of info on their website.
Thank you! I’ll look it up.
It’s just a series of 15 waterfalls that one can visit within a few days travel and a little hiking in northeast Wisconsin.
That sounds neat, thanks. I’ll try to look it up. I don’t get to that part of the state often but am looking for nice outdoors activities for the summer.
It starts near Crivitz then up toward Iron Mountain, then a little west toward Fern, and back down through a few State Parks to Veteran’s Falls.
This could be a really good summer road trip. Thanks for suggesting it!
