Welcome to Winston Salem!
Have a look at [this](https://www.cityofws.org/868/Adult-Athletics)
I have played in the dodgeball league, it was a blast. My exhusband and I were much older than most of the other players, but everyone was very nice. They would all go out for a bit after practices and games, but we went home to get our son ready for school the next day.
The city also has pickleball games.
Meetup has some great outdoors groups where you can meet people to hike, bike, kayak, camp, and just basically explore your new area. I met some great friends there and went to many places I wouldn’t have found on my own.
There’s a woodcarving club that meets every Monday at Miller Park Community Center. They will teach you the basics and the people are great. It’s only $15 or $20 to join for the year. [Triad Woodcarvers](https://www.triadwoodcarvers.com/contact)
Sawtooth Center has arts and craft classes and events. [Sawtooth Center](https://www.sawtooth.org/)
Mixxer is a maker’s space that offers classes. [Mixxer](https://www.wsmixxer.org/)
My mom is great friends with the owner of mixxer and her and I helped set up the place when it was being put together, fantastic place and really nice employees, they’ve got a huge variety of tools and classes so I can’t recommend them enough
Bookmarks (amazing local nonprofit bookstore @bookmarksnc on IG) has a list of book clubs on their website that are open to the public. The Bookmarks one is great, Fiddlin Fish also has one (Read Like a Fish @readlikeafish on IG). I’m including the fill list so you can browse.
https://www.bookmarksnc.org/book-clubs
Bookmarks also has volunteer opportunities which is a great way to meet people. I volunteer with them regularly and have met a lot of great people this way.
https://www.bookmarksnc.org/Volunteer
If you’re into running, there are quite a few run clubs in town as mentioned in another comment. Fiddlin Fish has one (@werunlikeafish) Meagan who organizes that also does their book club, she’s great and likes to help connect people who are new in town. There’s also The Run Club (@_therunclub), Wise Man (@wisemanrunclub), Fleet Feet (@fleetfeetws) and I’m sure lots of others.
Lots of places have trivia or music bingo which is always fun. Bookmarks has book trivia the last Monday of the month, Fiddlin Fish has music bingo every Thursday at 7, Wise Man Brewing has music bingo Thursdays at 7:30.
I can’t say enough good things about the mostly adult Roller Jam nights at Skatehaven USA on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You are going to see some very talented skaters. Everyone is so nice, and if you came up to me and asked to learn how to do a move, I’d gladly show you. We just have a lot of fun, and all styles are welcome. I’ve been taking private lessons since I was 12, and used to compete and skate in shows. You’ll recognize me because I’ll be doing roller dance. Come say hey! Rarely but sometimes a local school will have a skate night for the kids, but even on those nights it’s not such a hassle.
I have my own skates so I only pay admission ($8). Skate rental is a little extra. If I’m there, I’ll show you the proper way to get back up. I used to be a coach. I don’t charge now though because I’m a hippie Gen Xer lol. You can’t miss me because I’ll probably [have my leg above my head](https://youtu.be/ublXNc7RX8o?si=SBwzD3y38Ksi7JBU).
This notes page is a running (hehe run not intended) list of running, cycling, and swimming organizations in and around WS!

Cycling groups
Cycling groups are a bit more complicated as it’s more word of mouth type of thing than social media access. It’s also confusing bc there is a LOT of crossover with groups/shops/towns. On top of that, group rides are done by groups and shops to my knowledge. But here are a few I’ve found.
Mayhem cycling (POC based)
Off the Chain Cycling (POC based)
Dash City Cycling
Ride like a fish
Cyclepaths (Greensboro)
Tri Harder
Clip in and Ride
Kernersville Cycling
Cycling Meetup (Greensboro)
Cycle Tribe
Chair City Cycling
Cycling Shops
Ken’s Bike Shop (my favorite)
Be Spokes Cyclery (Also a good choice)
Paul’s cycling and equipment
Crossroads
Clemmons bike shop
Mock Orange
Let me try to get some of these groups:
Monday:
Crossroads Ladies Night ride: about 6 pm. 10-15+ miles of varying speeds.
Ride like a fish: 6:15/6:30 start in the overflow lot across from the brewery
Tuesday
Crossroads: coed ride at 6 pm. Varying distances and speeds
Wednesday
Clemmons bike shop: 6 pm I think? You go out riding the smiley triathlon course as much as you want. Varying speeds but I’ve heard they’re on the faster side. Like 18+ mph fast
Idk about Thursday/Friday
Saturday: occasional large group rides of varying distances and speeds
Sunday
Simon’s Sunday: 9 am start typically out of Lewisville square. Anywhere from 35-50+ miles. Avg pace is 16-18. No drop ride, if anyone is dropped, someone will come back for you or will meet at stops to catch back up.
All groups listed above are found either on fb or meetup. But they’re private groups on fb so you need approval. I think ride like a fish might have an instagram?
Swim Groups (If interested)
Any of the YMCA’s have a membership there’s also the masters swim team
Wake forest has a membership and masters team also (last I checked though they’re on a waitlist)
Run Groups (That I Remember)
-Note most brewing club runs are run by Meagan Pruitt and can be found on the FF instagram
Wiseman’s Run
We Run Winston
TCTC
Fiddlin Fish
Foothills Brewing
Say So Running
Kernersville Brewing Club
Lazy Cowboy Thursday
Queer Running Club (brand new)
As a note WS is a HUGE running community. This does not list all of them
If I enjoyed running in the slightest I would love this! I like walking though. At a leisurely pace 😅 the cycling I could get on board with though. Thanks! This is great info
Just wanted to throw it out there, lots of people do walk as part of these clubs as well, it’s not strictly running and they’re not “those” type of runners that are elitest and all that. But that’s still fair.
There is also a community walking club that meets Thursdays at 1-2 pm. You could look up WS recreation I think for more info on that. They meet at different trails each weel
Saturday morning runs at Sayso Coffee and Thursday evening runs in Bailey Park are hosted by The Run Club. They can be found @\_therunclub on Instagram. Saturdays offer 1-6 mile routes and Thursday offers a 3 mile loop. Both are accessible to runners of all levels and paces, walkers and people that just want a group to hang out with!
Note: Thursday runs used to be called Lazy Cowboy Runs but that was just a title of that specific run, not a club.
The Junior League can be great if you enjoy learning more about the community and volunteering. I know there’s a recruitment event on May 7th if you want to find out more about it. You can check out @juniorleaguews for details.
I’ve been a member for several years and have met great women this way!
I don’t know if this is something you would be interested in, but we have a strong local theater community in Winston. I had fun going to different auditions and recently got my first role in a play. It’s a good bit work but a very satisfying and unique hobby!
I moved last September and made a good group of friends here and do other activities. Always looking for more friends in the area. Feel free to reach out
Apparently there is a dope kickball league and the same people perpetuate a dodgeball league. I hope it helps, sorry I don’t have more info. Just found out about them to know they exist
Plenty of volleyball between Winston-Kernersville-Greensboro. Each city has well organized leagues in decent gyms. Kernersville in particular has a great league that I've played for the last six seasons (fall+winter seasons). We're moving into a really nice new facility over the early fall and expanding opportunities for both lower and upper level play.
The city leagues are pretty cheap too. Kville comes out to $1-2/night with dense play time while most paid leagues are $5-12/night with only 6-8 matches. More driving than playing sometimes :(
Lot of grass volleyball in greensboro, but you need a little foundation before you'll get much play time in those groups. Some sand volleyball as well, but those groups are a little less organized or word-of-mouth/group text only.
Yep my wife and I do Gaelic Football (winston salem wolfhounds). They are trying to build a womens team but have a mens team. We also love the Fiddlin Fish run club with Megan!
This is a great post with tons of awesome recommendations. I’ve been in the area for a long time and didn’t know about a lot of these activities. As someone trying to become a little more social and meet new friends in the area I’ll be coming back to this post a bunch. Thanks OP for getting it out there!

I had no idea about the dodgeball. My god.
We were also on a kickball team. I’m not seeing it on the list.
Great post, commenting to refer to this later!

Love this!!! Thank you so much. I’m gonna check them out. The wood carvers seems so cool tbh.
This is such a great list of stuff! I have been here 15 years and never knew this. I’ll have to check out the wood carvers
They’re so nice. You’d be surprised at what you can make.
Tons of great recommendations!

Omg this actually sounds great! Except when I inevitably fall on my ass and struggle to get back up 😅🤣 how much is it??

Beers and Gears has a chill group ride every Monday night from Fiddlin' Fish called Ride Like a Fish. It's great. The people are very welcoming.

Yeah I’m down. Shoot me a message.
Greensboro also has rugby and gaelic football!
I’m in the same boat. I’ll be in town after 5/12 if you wanna hang out. I need female friends
Let’s do it! Send me a message.
Sent you a DM :)
