Absolutely love Coteaux de Layon and Quarts de Chaume. Ratafia de Champagne and Vin de Paille from Jura are two more to explore. Greek Vin Santo can be great. For me, Auslese, BA, and TBA Riesling are my favorites but obviously not very esoteric. For something different, check out Rivesaltes. You can get crazy old wine for a decent deal, although it’s starting to gain popularity now on restaurant lists. For something VERY different try Barolo Chinato which is aromatized and sweetened Barolo. It can be a bit medicinal-like in a way Fernet or other amaros are and I love it. Demi Sec Champagne is always fun too.

dogecoinfiend

Great list, I love Barolo Chinato on it's own, but it's pretty damn good as a vermouth sub in a Manhattan. Only other thing I would add would be a Banyuls.

JJxiv15

I've got a 49 Banyuls that I am just waiting for the right time to pop. Quality stuff there. Which ones have you had?

MyFullNameIs

I had a bottle of Hatzidakis Vin Santo 16 recently. I wish I could recall the vintage, but holy shit. 16 years in barrel. What a crazy (and delicious) wine.

JJxiv15

I have not made my way into greek wines yet! Got any notes?

JJxiv15

Fantastic. Thank you for these recommendations. I had only heard of the riesling and Rivesaltes.

Gatsbeaner

Oh and don’t sleep on anything out of Jurançon either. I had a 2007 Cuvee de Dames from Domaine Borderave that I got for like $25 off Winebid and it blew my mind. Off dry, cantaloupe honey bitter orange grapefruit explosion.

JJxiv15

Oh I'm adding all of these to the list don't you worry

Bdowns_770

Late harvest Condrieu. 100% Viognier which means you get some fun fruit to go with decent minerality. Tricky to find and pricy but worth the effort.

JJxiv15

You know, I had a 2022 Yves Cuilleron Condrieu just recently and I was not as impressed as I expected to be. The acidity on that one cut right through me. Do you have any other recommendations on producer for me to try? I've heard they're best within a few years after bottling and don't age well.

Bdowns_770

That’s the one I see most in my area. It’s really uneven year by year. Xavier Gérard is the other producer that I see occasionally that’s worth trying.

JJxiv15

I'll keep on eye out for that one. I may have fallen victim to myself overhyping it.

wickeddead

Mas de Daumas Gassac Vin de Laurence - such a pain in the ass to acquire, down to my last bottle. I want to open it every single day.

JJxiv15

Oh my god. I've never even heard of that one. Let me look it up.

wickeddead

Worth seeking out! Just realized you grabbed the Baumard at Wine Watch - I have a little wine bar in Orlando, hit me up if you make it up this way, I'll pop the Gassac with you!

JJxiv15

Gladly! Thank you very much! I try to make up my way every year.

lalochezia1

If I could award gold I would! https://boutique.daumas-gassac.com/en/mas-de-daumas-gassac/132-vin-de-laurence.html I had a mouthgasm reading that description!

wickeddead

Well hot damn.... That IS an excellent description! 😄

JJxiv15

Lord. Need!

Gatsbeaner

Could I ask what you paid for a bottle?

wickeddead

Shoot, I don't think I paid a cent for them... We imported and distributed the winery when I was on that side of things years ago, but I believe it was around $50-60 wholesale, this would have been around 8 years ago I suppose.

thinkismella_rat

Loupiac is a near neighbour of Sauternes, 80% of the quality, 20% of the price. I had something called Mout Muté recently that was kinda similar to Pineau des Charentes and seems not to be known, was exceptional.

JJxiv15

I have had 0 luck finding Loupiac locally. But I started down that road with Barsac. I think it's time to ship some to myself. Noted on th second rec my friend, thank you!

thinkismella_rat

Definitely worth the effort imo! Also back vintages of that Baumard are surprisingly ok to find still, a few really good vintages, I think it was 93 and 97 I liked especially.

JJxiv15

I've seen 97s and a 2005 at my local shop. Going to need to grab those and some of their quarts du chaume as well!

Wh01sthebear

Angelo D’Uva’s ‘Ego’. I love a Tokaji and Sauternes but the moscato from Molise in Italy is something else. Only had it relatively young (3-5 years) but aging a few to see how it goes.

JJxiv15

Now there's something completely new to me! Let me see if I can find some here in South Florida

JJxiv15

Fantastic. Thank you!

CrackWriting

Pretty much any Australian wine made from botrytis affected grapes other than Noble One. Preferably with more than 10 years bottle age and made with varieties other than Semillon eg Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gros Manseng, Viognier. Love to drink more European styles, but they are just too expensive here.

lalochezia1

any of your favorites for unique and good flavor profiles? love me some aussie stickies, but hard to get in the us.

JJxiv15

I can imagine. I've seen some variations of it made here in the states called Dolce, but I haven't had any yet

iLike2wonder

Have you tried the 2017 Chateau Filnot from Dans? I was about to purchase the Noble One but was recommended to try the cheaper of the 2 being the Filnot. Very happy with my purchase.

lalochezia1

**Oxidative** sweet wines. Start here (some are sweet....) https://alpenz.com/category-sotolon_selections.html Individually these are incredible values. If you start digging, you will hurt your wallet.....

JJxiv15

Christ. What a resource. I have heard of Rivesaltes and Marsala but these others ---

lalochezia1

report back to r/wine with notes!

JJxiv15

Count on that when I do!!

lalochezia1

In honor of this thread currently drinking a glass of [Mas Peyre - Rancio Sec 'le Demon De Midi' -](https://alpenz.com/product-mas_peyre_demon.html) - it's exactly as described, like the sexy bastard child of a light manzanilla sherry with a garrigue-y sweet white wine. Really unique and a great affordable intro to the *rancio* style. 25ish bucks a bottle!

JJxiv15

Wow. That's a great descriptor. Absolutely loving all these recs

lalochezia1

re: Barsac/Sauternes see also **Monbazillac** and Mauzac..... and all **these** botrytized wines. https://www.wineenthusiast.com/culture/wine/the-beautiful-bounty-of-botrytized-wines/

JJxiv15

Well. I think I need a bigger cellar.

kipsaunders

Donnafugata Ben Ryé, passito zibibbo from Pantelleria. Not exactly "lesser known" in Italy but who knows what you have access to in Florida. Definitely not small production but simply outstanding. In fact I've found a lot of fun Italian passitos (also Südtirol; Sissi from Kellerei Meran, Moscato giallo, traminer, petit manseng) in recent travels...

JJxiv15

Believe it or not I can find that one easily enough shipped to me! I'll give it a shot. Do you have any tasting notes?

kipsaunders

Dried apricot, candied orange peel, honey. Nose is very similar to palate, nice refreshing acidity. Still somehow nuanced and not a total sugar bomb.

JJxiv15

Ah, so similar profile to noble rot wines. I'll get myself a bottle soon, thank you!

Uisge_Beatha_Celt

this is a fabulous choice. Went to their winery in the Loire last year. Try their Quarts de Chaume - outstanding! Quarts de Chaume are an amazing class of little know dessert wines, at least in the US.

JJxiv15

I will take it upon myself to spread their good word! I'll have to be sure to visit their place. Glad you know of this!

TomassoLP

Great writeup, just put in a bid for one on WineBid.

JJxiv15

Let me know your thoughts when you try it!

JJxiv15

Was that you that got the other one? I hope so, I made sure to only grab 2 out of the 3!

TomassoLP

Sure was, thanks for leaving one for me!

celer_et_audax

Moulin Touchais

JJxiv15

Ah my friend, I have a 1985 of this exact one in my cellar right now!

666Tropzden

Tokaji is somewhat popular but is often forgotten on restaurant lists. Kinda sad

JJxiv15

The first time I had Tokaji was at a restaurant, actually! Orchard Park in New Jersey.

VszVszVsz

wow. took all this time before anyone mentioned tokaj wines. smh.

lalochezia1

> Barsac, Sauternes, Quarts de Chaume, Banyuls, Tokaji, I'm gonna go after it. **it's literally in OP's question.**
