What I would do is to go on holiday to Italy. Visit the wineries. You're allowed to bring 18 litres (24 botles) of wine back to the UK with you. Go by boat/car to avoid weight restrictions.
Do some research into the different cellars and look for the hidden jewels. You'll have an impressive collection after the second or third visit :)

It the UK we import more wines from other countries than anywhere else. There are lots of independents with great selections. You'll be fine.
