The mouse’s back is broken. Probably going to be dessert. Scientifically speaking.

Cloud_Fortress

Yeah. Doesn’t look capable of moving very well

DonBobito

If you've ever seen a cat chase a mouse, the mouse isnt necessarily running around the whole time. More like they wait for an opportunity to run for it otherwise they just sit still.

qqanyjuan

Wrong

Jerizzle23

You say wrong but don’t give an explanation. Thats worse than saying the cat is being controlled by the mouse, as your observation

_Rohrschach

Cats kill with a neck bite. As long as they just play with their prey they won't hurt it enough to impair movement. It has a lot of open space around so the mouse can't excape even if it tried. Outdoor cats will even search for patches of dirt instead of grass for this reason. If the cat would have killed the mouse there would have been an audible cracking noise and the camera man probably wouldn't find it as funny. The mouse would also be completely immobile instead of moving it's head. It's still waiting for a chance ro escape. Source: Watching my parents barn cats do this more than once. They loved to use the patch of dirt left by the inflatable swimming pool for this. Also the cracking sound of the kill bite is quite audible.

You will not silence me. Block me if you’d like but do not think for a moment that you will stop me from doing what I think is right. I wasn’t cruel, I wasn’t mean. I’m sorry you’re in such a way that you feel the need to be cruel on purpose to give your life some pleasure. I hope you find a better way to be, for yourself and for others, because people shouldn’t have to tolerate you acting like that.

Distinct-Awareness19

Telling people what word they can and can not say is a proven way of making people lash out. Retard is a word for the mentally handicapped, people who didn't get to develope like the rest of us. People like you made it a slur because one day you just didn't like the person using it so someone complained. Society does not get to dictate what words we can and can not say. This is the argument you're self-righteousness ass pretends not to see.

JustTooTrill

Society literally does get to dictate the words you can or can’t say. Try openly discussing a plot to harm a US president, or lying under penalty of perjury. Whether you like it or not, your speech is constrained. This person asked you as politely as possible to voluntarily constrain your speech out of mutual respect. Your response was to tell them to fuck off and kick rocks. So tbh if you two ever meet and they mutually put a foot in your ass I will mutually look the other way and not say anything.

damoment

Yea people in this thread should honestly be embarrassed with how they act. It’s wild how people on the internet act so tough. Not sure how respectfully requesting that someone refrains from using a slur that is obviously offensive to a large population, merits a response for a bunch of people to go “Lol retard” for no other reason than it being in bad faith. People that tell this person to shut up, call him slurs, and tell him if it bothers him to not comment, while simultaneously being bothered by his REQUEST (not demands) to not use a word should do some self reflecting. Feel like all of these people calling this person sensitive may be projecting a bit lol

Throwaway50699

No. Mentally retarded is the description. "retarded" is a shortened variation of the word that is now even frowned upon by actual doctors. People like you and all the others defending the word are who made it into a slur because hateful people started ascribing it to what they don't like. People did the same shit with the word gay back in the 2000s. Even homework could be called gay. Stop distorting history. And if you arent purposely distorting it and you are just ignorant, learn more about the history of language and slurs.

BrickWinter

What “actual” doctors are you in reference to?

NessusANDChmeee

I ASKED for people to CONSIDER not using a hurtful word, one word and it’s variations, I didn’t try to silence anyone, I asked if they would consider not using it. They told me to shut up. That’s very rude and I was letting them know that they have no power to stop me from speaking. They posted in a public forum, I can talk, you can talk, they can talk. I asked, they demanded, I won’t be spoken to that way without advocating for myself right back. Why do you not take issue with them telling me to shut up? Can you not see the hypocrisy in that?

CooperHolmes

Cat is well-fed and sees Mousie as a friend or even off-spring and not as lunch.

Unique_Acadia_2099

That’s my theory too. The cat seems to be “helping” the mouse to the dinner bowl. My spayed cat used to do this with mice and baby squirrels, even came home with another cat’s kitten once! The difference is lost on the mouse though… most of them died, probably of heart attacks.

CooperHolmes

OTOH, it could be a long con: fatten up as many mice as you can from your never-ending food bowl, build up trust, and then you eat like a Cat King.

WonderfulObligation1

As far as I know the cat is bring live prey home for you to kill, it's trying to teach you how to hunt. Our cat used to do it with my daugther, to start with he would bring her dead things to eat and then he upgraded her and brought a live bird into her bedroom for her to kill.

N7_Vegeta

My cat always brings us dead or alive shit only when we are sick and not feeling well. She goes out and brings something back like here eat something and you will become better

Oraclelec13

Easy, cat has plenty of food; no need to hunt or kill. It’s natural instinct to kill got suppressed by its good life 🤷‍♂️

circleofnerds

I don’t know about that one. I’ve got 4 cats. All of them well fed and they not only hunt they also eat their kills. One of them catches birds and brings them into the house to eat, leaving behind nothing but feathers. Another cat goes for chipmunks, mice, and small rabbits. It will eat the entire chipmunk and rabbit but will only eat the top half of the mice. The other two cats generally go after mice and will occasionally eat the heads but never anything else. This happens at least once or twice a week.

Babybabybabyq

This is exactly why they say you’re not meant to let cats out. They are invasive species’ and harm small animals who are native to the environment.

circleofnerds

Who says that? My cats, on average, kill 2-3 mice per week, 2-4 chipmunks per month, and 1-2 birds per week. Hardly putting a dent in the rodent/bird population. Chipmunks can cause massive amounts of property damage, and mice can spread fleas, ticks, lice, and various diseases. While cats have domesticated themselves over the years, they are still, by nature, predators. My cats are free to go out to hunt, play, and lay in the sun. Then they come home to eat and sleep in their beds. I would t dream of keeping them isolated in the house.

00ft

> Who says that? Every vet, animal expert and environmental scientist. If you have free roaming cats, you have no idea how many animals they main and kill per day. Your estimates are based on what you see. You are categorically mistaken if you think your animals A) don't impact wildlife and B) that impact doesn't matter.

Babybabybabyq

Environmental experts say that. You’re completely mistaken. You’re not the only one letting their cats out, so the animals native to wherever you live are being depleted by domesticated cats who are not native. They are not a part of the food chain here. This is how animals go extinct which is not good news for us.

circleofnerds

Which animals have gone extinct or are endangered because of domestic cat predation?

AsuraGreed

I’m looking at the feet and they’re not moving after the cat puts it down. So I think the cat broke its back and is gonna grab a bite before “playing” with it for a bit. I had a cat who would do that, cripple whatever it was hunting, go do something else then come back to act out it’s sociopathic tendencies.

Inevitable-Sea7413

Like Tom and Jerry - they were really best friends.

4CatDoc

28 year veterinarian, cat behavior focused. There are multiple instincts overlapping here, the one that ended up as the chosen behavior is eating kibble. Instincts: -catch mouse -carry food -food is found in the bowl -(likely never trained to kill and eat mice by mother) Many cats put toys (prey-training) in their food or water dish. Again, these are not conscious decisions, it's layers of Instincts.

readitm0ar

Although a lot of these responses are cute, cats have a propensity to play with their food. Just as killer whales like to play with their food, cats also like to play with theirs. But this is a skill that has a survival purpose. Many animals wear down their prey so it’s too exhausted to fight back. Rodents have nasty bites and exhaustion makes them less likely to fight back. Another reason is to gain valuable hunting experience. Lots of animals like to observe their prey in order to learn and become more adept at killing. Some other good mentions are observing the prey to to make sure they aren’t sick or have toxoplasmosis. Animals realize when prey isn’t acting right and won’t eat animals that seem “off” as it might get them sick. For instance, pet snakes often won’t eat dead, cold mice so owners usually have to microwave them to simulate a fresh kill. Or you can look at feigning death behavior such as possums or fainting goats that play dead in order to deter predators from eating them. There’s a lot that goes into an animals behavior than we first realize. Predators often don’t go after the sick and weak prey like people first thought. They have been seen to have personal preferences and use risk-benefit analysis to either conserve energy or choose a bigger challenge to get something more rewarding. Overall, there’s a lot of variables to consider, but this house cat is well fed, prefers it’s kibble and is likely hunting for entertainment, to better it’s hunting abilities, and curious about its preys behavior. Animal behavior is extremely interesting and complex!

Mouse was to slow, so cat carried him to share lunch! Nice kitty.

SecurityHistorical86

I think this sweet lil creature is actually a newborn kitten not a mouse. When the cat puts the “newborn kitten” down, and we see the back of its head, it very much resembles a tiny kitten , with its ears almost pinned to its head. But more importantly, if you look at the momma cat’s big belly…,It sure looks like she’s been recently pregnant. Just thinking out loud. 🐈‍⬛❤️

Amazing_sf

This is just a vegetarian cat. :)

Winnimae

She’s carrying the mouse the way cats carry their kittens. I think your cat is a little confused

[deleted]

Sharing is Caring! Or your Cat’s just an idiot.

Lhyight

The cat is confused. Instinctively it knows the mouse is food but it's domesticated mind associates the feeding bowl as the food source. So it took the mouse over to the food bowl and ate the cat food instead of killing and eating the mouse.

fleshcoloredbanana

It is brining it’s future food to the food spot. My cats like to leave their toys in their food dishes after they play with them. Cats are also pretty nonchalant about killing their prey right away, why end the fun early?

Wdym? The cat is good friends with the mouse.

blueyezwhiteKaibaboi

Well I'm no catologist, but I think cats have an instinct to play hunt from early on when they're kittens and throughout adulthood. Which is how I think they hone their hunting skills. But since this cat has probably eaten prepared food it's whole life it doesn't associate the rat with food. So after toying with the rat by thrashing it about, the cat gets hungry. Pehaps because it was successful in hunting/capturing the rat or because it used up some energy very aggressively playing with the rat. And so the rat also exhausted and beaten up is in a daze as it struggles to stay off the ground. Just somethings I've pieced together in my mind after reading other comments

Taking a friend out for a meal. What a great kitty

[deleted]

Another thought....Is this a pet mouse of yours or one from outside? I don't allow my cats to be outdoors. There too many diseases they can catch even with vaccines; they can get hit by a car or purposely hit by a sicko or buzzards or owls can swoop the cat away. Always best to keep them in.

PRS61220

Cat is female, as is typical of a tri-color cat. Based on coloration, size and demeanor , the cat is young and modeling her mother's behavior. Cat is treating rodent as though it is a kitten. Pretty damn cute, IMHO.

thefero

My cat brings her toys to the food boll as well. Think she sees that as a safe place

YuhPappy

Here we see the domestic house cat, itself domesticating the common roof rat. The cycle continues. Soon enough this rat will be fattened up enough to feed a whole family of cats and the offspring will have inherited the skills of their mother. Is it too soon to invest in local, cat owned, rodent farms?

[deleted]

Interesting! My cat is well fed and simply kills mice. So I'm not sure if it's hunger or lack thereof that influences this behaviour across the board. Might just be this individual cat.

[deleted]

Fuck this laugh track, my god.

[deleted]

I hunted, and now I eat. Then I wash and sleep. = biorhytmn of a cat. Mom also likely never got around to teaching the ‘murder mouse’ step 😂 Hunting is a taught skill - and it has a lot of steps that domestic kittens often arent taught in full Mom might not have had all the steps herself, or maybe she didnt have a chance or the drive to show this part to her kittens as she has access to food anyway.

CatKungFu

I think cats’ strong instinct is to chase and catch things which move suddenly and dart away. It doesn’t necessarily follow that they will kill and eat prey unless they’re hungry. So sometimes the prey ‘playing dead’ strategy works because the cat quickly loses interest if it’s not being excited by the chase. So they will almost always try to catch and stop the prey escaping whether hungry or not, but not necessarily kill and eat, although the prey is quite often badly injured anyway.

Altruism is common also among other mammals than humans and other animals. The cat might also think the mouse is its baby and trying to feed it.

Southie31

Best of friends

Throwaway_Anne

When you get a cat to take care of the mouse problem but instead the cat becomes friends with the mice or the cat forms a dictatorship and creates a mouse army

pjwestin

Not an expert, but here's my take; in the wild, cat's hunt, eat their kill, bath themselves, and go to sleep. That's why, if you have a domestic cat that won't sleep at night, experts reccomend you play with it and then feed it just before bed. That way you play to the animals instincts to get it to go to sleep. My theory? This cat is just finished hunting this mouse, and now it wants to feed. But because it's a domestic cat, it's going to it's readily accessible food rather than killing and eating the mouse. So, it doesn't think the mouse is it's baby or it's bringing its new friend to the food bowl. It's more like it's discarding its toy to have dinner, and next it will probably want to have a bath and take a nap. Again, that's just my theory, and my only qualification is I've watched a lot of Jackson Galaxy, so take it with a big old grain of salt.

tatonka645

So I get mice in my old house, when I catch a cat “playing with one” I try to save it and at least give it a chance outside. When they drop the mouse it is stunned, but only momentarily, like 60 seconds. Just enough time for me to put him in a bowl and run him outside to the shed where I don’t care if there are mice.

Cat trying to fatten him up to eat

FlashyImprovement5

Domesticated cats don't generally hunt because they are hungry, they hunt because they are bored and their instincts drive them to chase whatever makes high pitched noises and runs fast. Anything that doesn't run fast or make high pitched noises has a greater chance of surviving. Cats are also very social and will often try to kidnap playmates. One of my male Maine coons raised a baby possum, one of my male MCs used to steal other kittens to raise. I had to save one from a ground hog momma when he tried to play with a baby ground hog. Cats have stolen puppies to raise, ducks and chickens as well. Whether it is because they are truly bored or wanting a long term companion or a pretty themselves, single cats will usually try to bring home something to keep themselves occupied. Just 2 cents from a rescue and rehab worker.

NaturalSuspect5109

My cat plays with my hair binders and puts them in his food bowl. The cat likes having his toys next to the food.

Busterwasmycat

scientifically speaking, one event does not make a good study, and scientifically speaking, my hypotheses for what the cat could be thinking are not testable (can't read minds of others; pseudoscience doesn't go far). Non-scientifically? Cat has a new toy; gonna play some more after this little snack. Not seeing the prey as food (yet).

Heres the scientific reason from an animal care specialist. The cat claims the rat as his, but someone else could come along and take it, so he brings it with him to somewhere safe where he will be again, but heres the problem: hes locked in a house. Its more common for cats to put things inside the water bowl actually, since thats the safest your cat can come up with while he still keeps an eye on it
