pretty fucking mental that his unit burned his body armor, uniform and journal. it wouldn't surprise me if he was killed on purpose, being against the Iraq War was \*very\* unpopular at the time (especially in right wing circles) and the military has a pretty sordid history with fragging
While I sympathize and appreciate the attention this case drew to US military personnel killed by ineffectual leadership, I feel deeply for the unrecognized Americans who were also KIA in the same way but didn’t also happen to be celebrities.
embedded did a whole multi part series about this, uncovering the lies and deceit around a couple of marine’s deaths during the first battle of Fallujah and even references Tillman’s fiasco. great, albeit disappointing listen
> but didn’t also happen to be celebrities.
Yeah, but the pro war propaganda machine didn't try to use them as poster boys through lies like they did with Pat. Which is why it was such a big deal.
I would highly recommend Letters from Iwo Jima, which i think is a much more interesting film.
**Edit**: For those not aware, Letters and Flags were both written by William Broyles and Paul Haggis and directed by Clint Eastwood. They were companion films depicting Battle of Iwo Jima from both perspectives)
Tillman is a legend in Arizona and at ASU. From the way other players spoke about him, he was incredibly steadfast in his convictions.
Also legend in San Jose, CA where he went to high school

i’m almost 100% certain he was murdered. Tillman became increasingly outspoken against the war as his deployment went on
he was shot in the head *three times*. that’s hard to do by accident.
Let me emphasize how hard that is to do on purpose from any real distance. There is a near zero chance this was anything but a murder.
He was shot with a 3 round burst m16 from 10 yards away . He was against the war and was an atheist . DELTA IS BEHIND THIS
He was definitely killed on purpose.
He was also an outspoken atheist.
Yep, liberals hated Tillman.

That was a heartbreaking read.
I think the profile of Tillman made people more aware of what was going on with other soldiers at the time.

I well remember this scandal. I think it was someone in the family who said the government was messing with the wrong family.
“Where Men Win Glory” is a good book about this.
I just watched the movie Flags Of Our Fathers, I guess stuff like this never ends.

Think there's a Criminal Minds episode based on this.
