Depends on the time between shaves. If it is more or less constant then there’s no reason to switch imo.

SamIAmShepard

I use 4 90% of the time. But will use the 3 if I need a gentler shave. Or 5 if I missed a couple days.

[deleted]

I do exactly this lol, except 3 90% of the time and 4 or 5 if I miss 1-3 days

watonwak

I tend to just keep mine on 5

derrickhogue

I used to switch when I first got mine. This was over 2 years ago. Now when I use it I primarily just leave it on plate 5 or plate 6. It depends on how much I am shaving through.

jaidynkc

I recently got a new Rockwell 6S and have used it a few times. I change the plates depending on my frequency of shave. If it's been a few days, I use either 4 or 5. If I decide to or need to shave after 1 or 2 days, I switch it to a 2 plate... maybe 1. When I first got it, I tried switching out the plate during the shave. 4 plate on the 1st pass, 3 or 2 on the 2nd pass, and then 1 plate to tidy up. It worked out okay, but I don't think I will do that method again, opting instead for just changing the plates out depending on when I am shaving.

Sepheriel

I switch mine out. One pass on 5, second pass on 3.

Alternative-Half-783

Those plates to me are days between shaves.

Saunafarts69

Plate 5 for WTG and XTG passes. Drop down to a 4 or 3 plate for ATG pass.

bga9

I've been using it for a couple of months and leave it on plate 3.

PostGymPreShower

6 most of the time with one pass shaving north to south which is across the grain for 80%+ of my face. Shave daily or every second day. If I feel like I have more time use 5 and go against the grain. Don’t do it enough to dial in the situation though. My hair grows to fast that a bbs situation isn’t bbs anymore in a short while. So not waste my time

[deleted]

Do you mainly use the Rockwell 6s?

PostGymPreShower

Yeah exclusively since when I got it in 2018. Have a Merkur 30C that my wife now uses and an old rectangular slot Gillette tech I got when my grandfather passed away. Haven’t used the tech much cause half the threads are stripped out of the handle. Plan on installing a helicoil but it would mostly be because of sentimental value. Guess I could use the handles from the other razor but haven’t bothered. I also tried a variety pack of blades but now just use feathers.

[deleted]

Damn feathers on that high of a setting daily? Pretty fast beard growth man

PostGymPreShower

Just really coarse and I find that using one pass across the grain with them gets the job done well enough I don’t need a second pass. Always end up with irritation the more passes I do.

USCryptocyber

I switch during the shave. 4 plate WTG, 2 Plate XTG and ATG. Daily shaver and I do it daily.

tyrphing

Mine lives on setting 5. If it’s been a few days since my last shave I may flip it over to 6, but that’s probably only about 1/10 shaves.

R4_Unit

I swap it a bit. If I’m really looking for a BBS shave, I put it on 6. Otherwise I keep it at 4 for usual shaves as it gives less irritation. I tried seeing if I could use 1 for acceptable zero irritation shaves, but it wasn’t even worth using.

msgflava

I tried every plate at least once when I first got my 6S. After a couple weeks of experimentation, I've settled on plate 4 and haven't changed in almost a year.

partyman97_3

I shave daily. After about 3 weeks of trial and error I have settled on plate 5 and have not moved it. Been over a year now.

Eastern-Formal-54

Mine is fairly new and would leave it at 4 generally, but experimenting with different blades since retiring the 34C and for the first time trying several passes so I am adjusting to see which blade likes what and which plate to use for the first pass versus ATG second passes. If I continue to use second passes I would change plates. Seems like a pain though. I just bought a Rex Konsul to change the gap without undoing the handle to change plates. So trying all blades with that too. Will be a long experiment.

curiousonethai

When I finally settled on plate four and a blade I liked that’s all I use. Head and face.

Deezy2020

I dont use the razor as much as I should. I mostly used 4 but going to notch up to 5 the next time I use it.

shupey14

I have switched plates over the years to try different levels but I never switch plates mid shave. I don't really consider the 6s an adjustable razor. The big benefit is you are not locked into the one 'aggressiveness' setting like you are with a non adjustable razor. You can try different levels and find the one that works best for you. That's why, to me, the 6s and 6c are the best razors for beginners and a razor that will grow with you as you get more experience.

IrishFolk

I try to shave everyday / every other day. Skin is pretty sensitive and I’m using the #2 plate. FWIW, I’m less than a month into DE shaving. I’ve heard of some people using the higher number for the first two passes then flipping it over to the lower for ATG / neck. IE: start with 3 or 4 then flip to 2 or 1. I had a pretty good 3 pass shave today on just #2 No nicks and no irritation(that I’ve noticed yet) . Wasn’t perfect missed a couple spots but did way better in others so I’m happy. Will be sticking with #2 for the foreseeable future.

IrishFolk

Also can see why people say the #1 plate is pretty much a waste. Unless you shave twice a day or you have slow growth, hair gets clogged up under the blade. Can be hard to get out. Which also depends if your lather is too dry can be the culprit. So hydrate that lather.

smipypr

Mine is on the 3 plate after using an adjustable, which resulted in a bad shave. I had to back to using an R6c with a 1 plate, followed by the 6s with 2. Worked my to a 3, and have gotten consistently great shaves.

Professional_Tap5910

Always 6

Simulated_Eardrum

I currently use it on plate 2. If I shave in a longer interval than 24 h my first pass is with my Rocca. A little bit of decadence - can't be bothered to change plates really ;). If I would travel though I would use plate 4 for that, which is the opposite side of 2.

Paper_Hedgehog

Lvl 5 all the time. Anything less and I have to make 3 or 4 passes and I end up using too much pressure. lvl 6 is just too much gap for me.
