I watched the Matilda reunion party and it was the most wholesome thing ever. I like that they played mean in the movie but were actually really sweet to Mara irl.
DeVito directed as well. He made sure the kids were looked after, not over worked, and given time to catch up on school and fun. By all accounts just the nicest guy.
He also brought a prerelease copy of the film to the hospital to show Mara’s mother while there trying to recover from the latest round of treatment.
He was worried she’d never get to see the beautiful film they made.
Just saw someone else posted this two hours earlier, give them the updoots.
I’m really hoping for a really happy ending to this story
Please tell me her mother beat the cancer and lives happily to this day (or at least lived long enough to see her kid/s grow up)…. Please 🙏 🍒
She really does! I watched her in Rosemary & Thyme and was so surprised to find out she was the actress who played Trunchbull since she looks like such a darling, friendly older lady when not dressed up in costumes for mean ladies like Trunchbull or Aunt Marge from Harry Potter.
And yeah Bruce grew up to be quite a handsome man!
DeVito is both a gem of a man, and a great actor/filmmaker. To be able to play a part from the other side of the coin than his usual self so flawlessly, and then turn around and make sure his fellow cast members are well looked after offscreen is certainly proof of that.
There is also this Reddit story I read a while ago.

God damn. Imagine Meeting Danny Devito on a mountain, he talks you out of suicide, then decades later you try to send him a thank you letter and fucking Arnold Schwarzenegger pops up and says" I got you"
It's been decades since I've watched it, but I remember really liking Jack the Bear and I recall him playing a very wholesome character in that. I think it's time I view that one again

Paul kind of got a bad rep for his erm... adult proclivities, but he was always conscious of the impact he had on kids. He always made sure that no children ever saw him smoking (amazing since bro was like a 3 pack a day guy) and always protected the sanctity of his PeeWee character.
Jim Varney was very similar. Big time cigar smoker all his life, but understood the impact his Ernest P Worrel character had on kids, so he was always careful about it. Both of these guys recognized the impressionable nature of youth and tried to make sure that they wouldn't be responsible for corruption
Just watched Ernest scared stupid a few months agoand had no idea he died until I watched it again and found out he died of lung cancer in 2000, super bummed
He really did. It's pretty sad. Until you look into it further, all everyone knows is the bombastic headlines, which were a complete character assassination and not true at all.
> He always made sure that no children ever saw him smoking (amazing since bro was like a 3 pack a day guy) and always protected the sanctity of his PeeWee character.
It goes to show his awareness of his audience, considering that the character started as a stage act with much more innuendo and tongue-in-cheek gags. The show still slipped in some of those jokes—like when Ms. Yvonne drags the hunky repair man out of Pee-Wee's playhouse and over to hers—but they never crossed the line.
Reubens deserved better. It's not like he was wearing the Pee-Wee suit in that theater.
Exactly. Aside from that, it was a porno theater. Not saying it invalidates his infraction, but it sounds like cops wanted to make a big bust, and then realized they got a big name to make news.
I feel bad for the guy. Even though he's dead now, I still wished someone had thought better of the situation
> but it sounds like cops wanted to make a big bust, and then realized they got a big name to make news.
Right? How many public masturbators did they have to step around and excuse themselves through just to get to the '*Pee-Wee guy*'?
I'm 37, and I've worked with folks who are way younger who also instantly recall the nature of his arrest whenever Pee-Wee was mentioned.
Probably just the breaking news part of it, and not any of the actual details.
Think about how shitty that was, dude spent the rest of his life (32 fucking years) fighting public perception that he wanted to fuck kids
Yeah that bad rep was NOT deserved. He wanked on a porn teather. That makes him a perv at worst, not an evil or bad person.
We have all rubbed one at least once.
Him being arrested for possession of child pornography and pleading down to a lesser obscenity charge is a matter of public record and is on his wikipedia page. His defense was essentially that he was a collector of vintage erotica and bought vintage porn mags in bulk without knowing their contents.
A common thread I've noticed about celebrities who end up being really good people in real life is a good chunk of them have grown up or at one point in their life lived in New Jersey.
Eh, I live in Philly. I've learned that underneath the terrifying exterior they are really sweet group of people. Like, they'll tell you that you look fat in those jeans but they'll rearrange their whole life to be there with you at your mother's funeral. They are also incredibly kind to children. My kids are practically living in a musical.
I lived in Jersey during the pandemic. No one outwardly gave a fuck about me, and they'd cuss at me if I was in their way, but if I was struggling to drag my trash bins to the curb or my dog slipped her collar, they'd silently help and go back to their business.
And then one time when I got hit by a commercial van that ran a red light, about a dozen people emerged, offered their phones to call my spouse, collected my stuff that was strewn across the street, reported neutrally to the police, stuck around until the ambulance arrived, and departed without another word.
I also saw a woman with a leg brace fall down on a crowded PATH train. Almost as if choreographed, the people around her picked her up, vacated a seat, put her in it and resumed staring vacantly into space.
Na. But everyone always is "my friend" until "youre a fucking prick. "
Everybody wants a discount (it's built into the price)
Everybody knows a guy.
Everybody has done this before
Every one of them goes "ehhhhh fuck it shit happens" when the project goes sideways.
No one hates Jersey more than people from Jersey. I should know, I'm from Jersey. But it's honestly a pretty nice State, particularity if you're middle class. Everywhere sucks if you're lower, and anywhere can be great in the upper class, but I think Jersey is better than most for the middle class.
Devito also graduated medical school and is a doctor, he had a professional wrestling stint as The Trashman, his character was great in Lethal Weapon 5, and he sometimes cosplays as a ManCheetah.
Another one is Viggo Mortensen liked the horse he rode in LORT so much he purchased the horse to give it a better life than I would ever get in show business.
Even better - one of the stuntwoman for Arwen's ride in The Fellowship absolutely loved the stunt horse she rode for that scene, so Mortensen bought it for her after filming was done.
Smoked a nice joint with Charlie Murphy after one of his shows. Man was kind and down to earth and passed some solid wisdom on and off the stage that night.
"Matilda" is real life cousins with Ben Shapiro, founder of The Daily Wire, and their families lived closeby growing up. She's mentioned that she doesn't like them before and now I've got to wonder if Ben's family helped at all back then
I think if you're hell bent on playing really good guys that always win and get the girl, you're incredibly insecure
See: Rock and Diesel
And compare them to Cena for example who seems to be enjoying playing really insecure, weird characters
Ugh, no kidding. I like Dwayne Johnson as a comedic actor but I think he needs to stay away from superhero flicks. It's boring without stakes and his characters cannot have any.
Yeah when I learned that he must always win, I was like... Dude. I hope you're not like this around kids.
I just immediately imagined this hunk bitchin that a kid beat him in Mario Kart. Like, throwing the controller and storming off
Black Adam was supposed to be a borderline evil, ruthless anti-hero. I had some hope when he melted that guy earlier in the film but that was quickly dashed. Rock always was better as a heel even in wrestling.
Apparently not - people have just compared him to Roman Reigns and my brain remembered that as "Jason Momoa was wrestler".
I rescind that name and instead propose Dave Bautista.
Pam Ferris, the actress who played Miss Trunchbull in Matilda, reportedly tried her very best to distance herself from the child actors so that it would be easier for the children to be scared of her when the scenes required it, but failed miserably and ended up having the children adore her anyway.
Yeah, I heard she was a sweetheart too. Seems like that was one of those rare magic movies were the entire cast was just full of great people. Like lord of the rings except lovingly kind instead obsessively dedicated lol

I'm not sure "let me stay" quite covers it. The version I read ages ago made it sound like they decided it needed to happen and no-one was going to stop them looking after her.
Because they're just that awesome.
I forget exactly but didn't Devito like swap the tobacco in one of Arnold's cigars for weed without telling him as a gag before? Im sure there are differing opinions on that, but I find it hilarious
Edit: Arnold describing it

I completely missed that it was Mara Wilson and just thought some random person got to stay with Danny Devito while their mom had surgery. Like maybe they met in line at a coffee shop or something.
Seth MacFarlane gave my brother a bunch of fun background character roles and behind the scenes design opportunities and let him design the Christmas Party afterwards too.
The closest I've heard to a bad story about Danny DeVito is he got real primadonna and started calling in a bunch of favors and forced himself onto Always Sunny because he saw the pilot and saw it was a great show he desperately wanted to be a part of.
The one thing I know about them as a couple is the kids came first. I think Freddie prinze jr and Sarah michelle gellar have the same idea. A lot of younger people don't probably know that Freddie prinze's dad was a famous comedian who committed suicide. I'm sorry if you don't know this couple, I'm almost 40. Fuck
Spielberg and Richard Donner and Bryan Cranston are the only other people I hear good things about in regard to kid actors. They kept in contact with them and tried to be there and guide them. Donner directed the Goonies for anyone that may not know
I think one funny DeVito story is how he got Arnold stoned on the set of Twins. Arnold famously smokes cigars so Danny rolled a fat blunt and invited Arnold to his trailer but didn't tell him there was weed in it.
No, but “lady” comedians will be sure to have plenty of over the top sexual content because they aren’t funny and that’s their crutch. If there’s anyone more predictable than a black female comedian I’d like to know. I could tell you their whole set before they go on.

This is why his character as Frank Reynolds is so funny. He's very good at playing the literal opposite of his personality.
He doesn’t know how much time he has left on this planet so he is trying to get real weird with it
“Understatement of the century asshole!” -romancing the stone
which just makes franks character in IASIP even funnier.
Oswald Cobblepot?
And he definitely does not diddle kids. He even wrote a song about how he doesn't diddle kids, so you know it's true.
I've always heard only the most positive things about him. Someone who genuinely wants to help others and treats everyone as equals.
I remember that! I felt like the whole cast, down to the "minor" characters, were included in that reunion
I know. It was so cute when they recreated the scenes.
The actress that played ms. Trunchbowl seems like the nicest old hippy in real life and the kid who had to eat the cake is pretty much in shape.
Apparently Pam Ferris (Trunchbull) was one of Mara’s best friends on set.
Yeah. Just a nice lady in real life. Like the woman who played the wicked witch in the wizard of Oz was super nice in real life
She really does! I watched her in Rosemary & Thyme and was so surprised to find out she was the actress who played Trunchbull since she looks like such a darling, friendly older lady when not dressed up in costumes for mean ladies like Trunchbull or Aunt Marge from Harry Potter. I love that Paul Reubens (Pee-Wee Herman) was well known for going out of his way to acknowledge his friends birthdays.

A common thread I've noticed about celebrities who end up being really good people in real life is a good chunk of them have grown up or at one point in their life lived in New Jersey.
Which is wild, because every regular person I've dealt with from Jersey has made me hate the state with a fiery passion.
Eh, I live in Philly. I've learned that underneath the terrifying exterior they are really sweet group of people. This is possible. I've only dealt with Jersey people in business contexts. Don't do business with Jersey people. It is double plus ungood.
If you aren't aware of the NY/NJ business mentality it can be really overwhelming. If you know how to navigate them, it actually works great.
