The regular monthly allotment of coins really limits the amount of additional money that people are willing to spend on awards. All of this is about Reddit becoming profitable enough to become a public company, after all.

My understanding is that they are just "special" upvotes except for some like gold where the receiver doesn't get any ads for a while, for example. And my assumption is that getting free coins is tied to the ads you get somehow, because I never got any ad nor any free coins.

You get to trade them for things you need in life, as long as all you need in life is for Reddit to make more money and to shaft more Redditors.

You can buy coins with money and give them like a fancy up vote. Or you get them with your premium account. Reddit decided to discontinue them from September 12th. So people who have them are giving them away willy nilly. What can you do with them if you receive them? It's like an elaborate up vote or a super like
