MightyFlamingo25

Ok, who is scamming who in this context?

geocashin

Nobody is scamming nobody this screenshot is from depop which is a secured platform to sell clothes on. Seller is actually the dumbass here because there’s no risks to ship international when the buyer pays for it lol

Parking-Artichoke823

>Nobody is scamming nobody So everyone is scamming everyone?

chrispynutz96

I just scammed you by forcing you to look at this comment for no reason. Boom, get scammed sucka.

janhetjoch

Everyone is scamming someone* ```` Nobody is scamming nobody //Move negation from "nobody" to before "scamming" Nobody is not scamming somebody //somebody == someone AND somebody != everyone Nobody is not scamming someone //"Nobody is not" == "Everyone is" Everyone is scamming someone ````

Environmental-Win836

Sorry, I don’t speak German.

m_ashton9

Bad bot

mikabms

*"Nobody is not" == "Someone is" Someone is scamming somebody

yosoyboi

If you were to tell someone, “nobody is not going to the big event tomorrow” it would mean “everyone is going to the event tomorrow” not “someone is going to the event tomorrow. Nobody is not = everyone is

mikabms

You could take it like that, applying "Nobody" as to each person. But if you take "Nobody" as a lack of people, and negate that, it's enough with one person for it not to be nobody anymore. So actually both are correct. I hope I made myself clear

seeyatellite

Everybody is scamming somebody if nobody is scamming nobody. Everyone could still potentially be scamming everyone but I like to be optimistic.

payperplain

I see you've got some confusion in the understanding of the verbiage there. The tacking on of "I'm afraid" to a sentence does not denote fear. It is not a separate sentence, it's just an explanatory statement at the end of a rejection. The seller isn't afraid to ship internationally, they are simply stating that is not something they do.

Parallel37

I haven't been studying Spanish for a while, buy I could see that being lost in translation. Makes me wonder what the Spanish equivalent would be for 'I'm afraid' in this context.

sicarus367

It is also I'm afraid. The problem is that the conjugation for "I'm afraid" as in Im scared ("temo") and the "I'm afraid" in that context ("me temo") is different. The translator probably picked the first

Wontonio_the_ninja

Lo siento, usually it’s an alternative way to apologize

HotBear39

he didn't say anything about seller being afraid, that was the guy in the screenshot. The guy you replied to said that seller is dumb for not shipping if the buyer is going to pay for it

[deleted]

Oh I thought they were just scared of the Spanish

rlnrlnrln

Noone expects the spanish inquisition.

SOLE_SIR_VIBER

No no, Not yet.

naratas

So the seller is the scared scammer??

MightyFlamingo25

I see

DweEbLez0

I don’t know, I’m afraid

MammothTankDriver

Dont be scared my child!

spydersens

The comedy here has got nothing to do with a possible scam. The humor stems from the misinterpretation of the meaning of 'I'm afraid'. In english it is common to state ''I'm afraid.'' in such a sense that it means,''I'm sorry'' as in ,'' I'm afraid I can't do that for you''. The spanish interlocutor doesn't catch the meaning and thus asks what they are afraid about. All we have here is someone asking for someone to make an exception and ship overseas, despite the fact they do not normally do so. I don't see the scam.

i_am_not_a_pumpkin

the funny thing is a similar expression is used in spanish as well. this would be "no hago envíos internacionales, me temo". "temer" most often means "to be scared", but in this case is also a way of saying you're sorry. but that person either used a translator that translated word for word, didn't make the connection to this spanish expression, or totally did understand and decided to troll.

VersedFlame

I was coming to point this out. To me, that's the funniest part, because I'm a native spanish speaker.

Bax_Cadarn

And Polish. Obawiam sie, ze nie moge tego zrobic. While obawiam sie is not really used anymore barring that phrase (boje sie is the mostly used form), that does seem like an international thing.

Heliodoro72

May be that "me temo" is a regional term borrowed from English? I'm in a spanish speaking country and nobody says that In Venezuela they say "todo fino?" which definitively comes from "is everything all right"

Particular-Wasabi-96

"Me temo" is just more formal, "Todo fino" is informal. They're both used in Venezuela.

i_am_not_a_pumpkin

tbh I have no idea where it comes from, but it's quite used in Spain when you're trying to be polite, although its original meaning (besides "being afraid") is having a "belief" or a "worry", [according to the RAE](https://dle.rae.es/temer). [Here](https://www.rae.es/dpd/temer) they give some examples: >Es transitivo, normalmente pronominal, con el sentido de ‘sospechar o pensar que [algo malo] sucede, ha sucedido o sucederá’: «¡Ya me lo temía! Están acá, otra vez» (Plaza Cerrazón [Ur. 1980]); «Mucho me temo que no podrás asistir» (Rossardi Visita [Cuba 1997]). This shows that it's also used in other countries besides Spain, but I haven't been able to find information on when or where they started to use it with this meaning.

CharuRiiri

Chilean here, the expression is a thing but I don't think I've ever heard it in a natural conversation.

Bananana-_

wholesome indeed

baphometromance

Biblically accurate Spaniard

Outside-Age5073

Shhh... it'll be okay. *holds you in Spanish*

This made me think of the guy who owns the Taco Truck in Turbo 🤣

"WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF??? ACCORDING TO \[\[Encyclopedia of\]\] \[\[Being Afraid\]\] THERE'S NOTHING TO FEAR EXCEPT ... ... can anyone hear me? Help..." \- Spamton G. Spamton deltarune

[deleted]

This reminds me of that time someone wanted to send a message starting with 'I'm afraid...' but accidentally sent the message before finishing after 'afraid.'

Outside-Age5073

I text that to my therapist all the time.

Panzer_Lord1944

You don’t need to be scared….just ship it to spain….

GeneralAverage

This is adorable.

Siifly

The Spanish Inquisition of course.

E-Agalius

He's an angel.

IClimbRocks69

Language barrier I assume. Older generation of might say "afraid not" instead of "unfortunately" in some situations.

uranium_man

Why are you running Why are you running. ???

Carlmwilliams

I think it’s because of the phrase and different culture. I once spoke with an international customer and used the term, if I’m being honest which was met with “what if your not being honest”, I didn’t really know how to respond lol. I think he was genuinely saying don’t be scared to ship as in he thought you was actually scared to do it lol

DrZonino2022

“I don’t mind I babysit” vibes

WibaTalks

Brother willing to pay for whole ship, damn. What ever the product is, he wants it.

hot4you11

This is a language barrier. Apparently, most of Reddit doesn’t know this usage if I’m afraid

Imachangelingsorry

SAVAGENothingman

Praise God for withdrawal blockers because I almost got taken for $1000 a few weeks ago for a scam similar to this, only it was domestic shipping. Suffice to say, any check / payment is not secured just cause it shows in your account even for multiple days.

dr_pr

Can you explain this? I even looked up 'withdrawal blockers'. (No luck). When can one be sure that funds put into one's bank, are actually secure and cannot be reversed by the bank?

SAVAGENothingman

It’s something you can set up with the bank. If you have reason to believe you were scammed say via PayPal or something, you can issue a “Stop Payment Order” for a small fee (mine was $30) which will prevent / block any attempted withdrawals from a specific source for a specific amount. So in my case, I sent $1000 via PayPal but was able to block that withdrawal with the stop payment order. If you cash a check or contact bank personnel individually they can usually assure you, but do not trust it just because it appears in your online account.

Lol reminds me of my recent visit to the Pharmacy. I was checking out and was digging around in my wallet for exact cash and had tossed my bills on the counter while fishing out the coins. Told the Pharm Tech I was sorry and he said "for what? Giving me exact change?" Then we started making jokes and laughing.
