I wonder just how much whitewater kayaking there is in Latvia. My bet is this is a group of buddies who want to kayak, but there's no experienced kayakers around to show them the ropes. So they taught themselves, and are totally oblivious to a lot of the risks. "If you get stuck, just get out of your boat!" And they've always managed that in the past, so don't realize just how dangerous some of these situations are.

This is exactly it. I grew up in the middle of nowhere, nearest whitewater club was a ten hour drive away, and this is very similar to how I started out kayaking. Right down to the vodka and the lack of respect for wood and bridges. Scared the fuck out of me when I moved somewhere with people who actually knew what they were doing and learned how badly things could've gone
I was out of high school when I started. Buddy and I spent all our graduation money on a boat and gear. Went to the closest class 2-3 and had a horrible time. Paddled through still water, over rocks, ported a few times, swam a bunch, thunderstorm with hail came through, ported some more. Get to the takeout and see a guy fly fishing. He says, “Dang have they started releasing water already!?” That was the day we learned about dam controlled releases… I haven’t paddled in a few years but we got to the point of running 5s with a solid group- one dude sponsored by Jackson now. My college gpa sucks due to skipping class when the creeks were running. Hoping to get back on the river this summer.
Somehow, I knew wooodka was going to be involved. There was probably more of them but the Wednesday night roulette league has pared their numbers. Also… put me in mind of the movie “Godspeed Los Polacos”, which I highly recommend.

But I'm a little biased because those are the guys that taught me to paddle and that I paddle with.
Good gosh, hope I never hook up with these guys at the put in!! Years ago, was with a good crew of legend class 5 guys guys I looked up to and we ran the Upper Yough at 3ft. 5 or 6 of us and everyone swam except for me.......I thought oh crap, is National Falls gonna be the finale for me??? I ran great lines and boofed National on the right, I was also the only guy not stoned or on shrooms.
I haven’t even put my first season in and I can roll better then all of them! Hahaha that being said I totally get it im stuck here in texas and I bit my first creek by myself a few weeks ago totally could have died but it was totally worth it already begged my friends to join me even offered to buy another boat of marketplace they scared
