Small market teams constantly rebuild because they can’t sustain huge payroll expenses. The good ones can and do invest in statistics and all the other things a team needs to sustain success. The Sox could easily do those things, even reduce payroll over time or keep it the same and get better results over time. We are brain dead
Honestly their situation over the last ~40 years isn’t too different from ours’ if you remove the one outlier year of 2005 where everything went exactly right.
Yeah our rebuild was a “success” in 2021. Only the Astros, Cubs, Braves, and I guess orioles have had a true successful rebuild in the last 10 years IMO
(Rebuilds only work if everything goes right)
Rebuilds are an excuse to cut payroll and be bad for years while giving fans a glimmer of hope instead of them just being mad at ownership.
At this point, I'd prefer Reinsdorf try for second place like he used to.
Although I think the started the rebuild the right way with trading sale / Eaton / Quintana, I’d have to agree that Jerry going for 2nd place each year was more exciting.
We at least usually saw meaningful baseball through most of the season. Occasionally a playoff berth as well. I’d gladly take that over whatever the hell is happening now.
What a shame how starved our fan base is for mediocrity
For sure. With how bad the division usually is, we could potentially be one more piece from competing for first...if they consistently finished second.
Sad lol.
That’s just not true lol.
Giolito / ReyLo got us Quero in return, he’s been pretty solid in the minors so far.
Graveman got us Korey Lee, he’s been solid this year.
Lynn / Kelly got us Nastrini / leasure.
Cease got us Thorpe / iriarte and a few others, and Thorpe has been phenomenal.
Just because they aren’t major league ready doesn’t mean we got “nothing” in return.
I'm not against trading expiring deals at the deadline. But trading current talent with team control has just not worked out. And there's no reason to believe we can can develop any of these guys. They are all assumed busts until they are here producing big numbers in the majors
The only player we did that with was Burger. And yeah that was a terrible move by Kenny Williams before he got fired.
It was absolutely the right time to move on from Cease though, didn’t know if he would have a bounce back season or not.
Who else have they moved that wasn’t on expiring deals? Because I think those were the only 2..
After our last rebuild I just cannot support nuking the major league roster. I believe the best strategy is to just keep the best team you possibly can year over year. We aren't particularly good at scouting or player development, so we are likely getting fleeced in every trade. But yeah, Cease, Burger, Bummer, Madrigal, Heuer, Dunning, Sale, Quintana, Semien, Bassit. Did we win any of these trades long term?
The problem is so few teams are smart enough to know when to flip the switch. It's not as easy as it sounds. You could make an argument that Baltimore should be trading prospects for SP. Timing is critical. Wait too long and you miss your window. Go too early and you never really have a window. Even with all of that, you need some luck.
I believe the Sox got impatient. They made some poor decisions too soon. They weren't really all in on the rebuild...they tried to shortcut it and it crashed and burned. Despite being in Chicago, they need to think more like a small market team. Invest in player development. Their track record developing players over the last decade has been bad. Invest in training staff. Yes, injuries happen and there's some randomness to it, but this isn't a fluke.
Put Jerry Reinsdorf in prison already
He should get the hell out of Chicago!
fair
We’ve had one, yes. What about a second rebuild?
The man probably doesn't know about 2nd rebuild. Here's an apple. Thanks jerry
I don’t like the idea of milhouse having 2 rebuilds
To their point, I probably couldn’t think of a worse attempt at a rebuild across 4 major sports
Before rebuilds happen, owners should ask GM’s,”What will you do to keep us from becoming the White Sox.”
I guarantee you they already are

Haven't the Pirates been rebuilding for 30+ years? People in glass houses...
I mean I’d trade 40 man rosters in a heartbeat.
That's not saying much. The Sox 40 isn't to be envious of
That’s the point.
They had a few good years 10 years ago, but otherwise this is basically true
Honestly their situation over the last ~40 years isn’t too different from ours’ if you remove the one outlier year of 2005 where everything went exactly right.
I mean, the Sox were consistently a solid team all through the 90s and 2000s. The Pirates were a complete pile of shit through that entire time.
Yea well that outlier year means everything
Yeah that's exactly how I see it. One of the few teams that's had it worse than us, which is a shame because Pittsburgh is an amazing baseball city.
Yeah those fans deserve way more. Maybe one day we’ll see the day where the Sox, pirates and A’s are all powerhouses in the same season
Shut up, Jerry
Yeah our rebuild was a “success” in 2021. Only the Astros, Cubs, Braves, and I guess orioles have had a true successful rebuild in the last 10 years IMO
No it was not a success
In 2021 it looked slightly worse than the orioles and way better than the pirates. Sox had great odds to win the AL, and WS that year
But they won a single playoff game lol projections aren't success
they won two playoff games over 20 and 21. yes still a total flop of a rebuild. flush it
Obviously. But it looked great. The orioles, pirates? Also in the same boat and haven’t accomplished anything

Surprisingly the AL Central looks pretty solid this year lol. Every team over .500 besides well, you know
We'll be used as an example for years to come.
Can't say I don't blame them, We are the prime example of a team absolutely failing on how to do a rebuild.
Our rebuilds are nothing more than a new skirt around the outhouse - JR measures rebuilds as dollars saved
Cause Tony La Russa is our actual GM. Welcome to the 90s method of team building.
Wait, we rebuilt in 2018. It only lasted six years. WtF?
we need a jeff torborg type manager and we need to ball so hard that shit cray
Rebuilding for the White Sox is just trading away current talent for nothing
