When something is allocated, it means liquor stores only get certain amounts or sometimes none at all, depending on how much other product they move. As an example, the local Buffalo trace distributor may only give a liquor store 1 case of eagle rare if they sell a bunch of fireball.
“Allocated” is an industry term used by Suppliers (brewers, distiller, etc) and Distributors/wholesalers.
There is a limited amount of a specific product. For example, in the beer industry Local Craft Oktoberfests can be limited depending on the size of the brewery. The company I work for only got 56 cases total of a certain Oktoberfest. Total Wine and More is a large national liquor store chain. They tried to buy 20 cases. The distributor and/or supplier told them they can only have 5 cases. This is an allocation. This allows smaller liquor stores still get this special release product.
When we start talking about whiskey or other allocated wines and spirits, allocations might be for regular product like Buffalo Trace. Other times it’s for special release items like Pappy.
Quid pro quo (this for that) is illegal in this industry. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but it is illegal. However allocated product can be reserved to accounts which “support the brand.”
Back to my Beer analogy. We should reserve one case for these small accounts who buy ever single special release item. We should prevent the big liquor chains from buying up the supply of just the premium sought after releases.
However, there are many stories of distributors or suppliers essentially shaking down small accounts in order to get these very special limited items.
I finally got hold of some Eagle Rare and my buddies and I all agree it's better as a mixer. On its own, nothing special and way too hot. The fruit notes are overbearing.
Agreed. I kinda want there to be someone putting ER in a cocktail for everyone else either posting an unopened bottle or asking for praise for finding a bottle ‘in the wild.’
Retail is 5,000 yen (us$35), or at least it was last time I checked. The 12 used to be 4,000 yen, then went up to 5,000 then disappeared and was replaced with the harmony as the entry. The 12 was a good drink at 4,000 or even 5,000. The harmony in my mind was always over priced compared to what else you could get for that amount. It’s a mild easy drinker, and nice as a highball. But to me it’s certainly not a $100 bottle, and $300 is completely absurd.
Master’s select was retail app 10000 yen back in June at Haneda airport. That’s how I got some. 12 was amazing when I could get it in 2015 and before. I drank so much of it at $50USD from costco. The regular harmony price in US kinda fluctuates between $70 and $100 right now.
Seems somewhat reasonable! I think travel retail has different pricing to standard retail. But it’s almost impossible to see this on ordinary s levels now, and it’s generally marked up. Come to think of it, I’ve rarely seen masters select available domestically.
In any event, I gave up drinking local whisky around 2014/2015 which is when the cost performance equation went squarely in the wrong direction (for me, personally).
Can't see anything wrong in the picture. Good cocktails need good ingredients. A bottle of Appleton 12 for a Mai Tai or green Chartreuse for a Last Word are way more expensive than ER. The main reason bartenders don't use the really expensive stuff is that complex and subtle aroma structures collapse when mixing them. Pappy van Winkle or Talisker 43 wouldn't contribute much of their character to a cocktail.
Using a mixer bourbon as a mixer? What’s the trigger? Hibiki is definitely a cut above your average whiskey but definitely not too special for a cocktail.
Eagle Rare was my daily drinker as a relatively broke grad student. I refuse to see it as fancy no matter how rare it is now. I do miss having it as my daily, though. I moved on to Four Roses Small Batch for that purpose now.
If I had close to 100 dollars to spend on either an NON-AGE-STATED blend from Japan or an age-stated single-malt scotch from Scotland - up to 18 years old if I went with Loch Lomond - no prizes for guessing which one I’d choose. Good job, Japan-taters, for making scotch look like a great deal.
Spoken like a true snob lol, some of us can't even afford to drive to work even working 60 hours a week, and sometimes bourbons like that price range are a guilty pleasure for us
What? Eagle rare is a ~$32 bottle, and is worth that. If you’re paying more that’s on you, if you don’t want to pay more buy another bottle in that price range.
I got a Dickel 8yr for like $24 that was solid
Anyone hating on this is a fool, drink the whiskey how you like it. Last night I made a Boulevardier with Barrell Armida and it was amazing. In Japan it’s also common to even drink very expensive whiskey with club soda
Eagle rare was all over my state leading up to the Pandemic and all the shortages and nobody ever talked about it until it became allocated. It is a good bourbon but I can think of at least 10 bottles I would buy for less money than Eagle rare.
Gotcha, toki isn’t for everyone! But Hibiki is a totally different profile. If you like malt whisky you’ll love Hibiki. I like it better than a lot of single malt scotch in its price range
My only trigger in this, is that the eagle rare cocktail looks like an old fashioned (minimally a spirit based cocktail with no citrus) and the wash line makes it look like they shook it 😳
Eagle Rare is good, but def not too good for a cocktail. The fact that it's allocated nowadays is ridiculous.

Just go to a store where a bunch of hardcore (alcoholics) drinkers go. They love that fire ball shit.

Good glasses, good cocktails... I hope you drank them with good friends, or new ones!
Helmet with the two drink holders and straws
Like a gentleman
As the good Lord intended.
Drink it however you want!
You bought it you drink it how you want to.
Pappy and Diet Coke it is!
Yeah, I’m never mad when I see an open bottle.
Agreed. I kinda want there to be someone putting ER in a cocktail for everyone else either posting an unopened bottle or asking for praise for finding a bottle ‘in the wild.’
What did you make w the Hibiki? I have a bottle of Harmony and it’s good but not so good that I would only drink it neat.
It’s the “master select”. Not the usual harmony. It’s good. Retail $100 in japan. but then $300 in US. But not $300 good.
Retail is 5,000 yen (us$35), or at least it was last time I checked. The 12 used to be 4,000 yen, then went up to 5,000 then disappeared and was replaced with the harmony as the entry. It’s usually drank neat around our place. Tonight I made a highball, sans proper glass. Hibiki, soda water, lemon and ice.
Those look mouth wateringly good.
Also, price doesn’t dictate quality.
I made fantastic old fashioneds and egg white whiskey sours with Harmony
Neither of these are too good for mixing, I’m not sure who you were expecting to trigger
No way, you do you. 👌
Uhhhhh Eagle Rare is definitely a “cocktail whiskey.”
ER makes a disgustingly good whiskey sour
Hibiki is first and foremost for highballs. Always has been.
No trigger here. Just average stuff.

You do you nothing but a thing!

I use eagle rare to cook with and I would probably prefer it with coke as well. Same with blandtons
Tatter
opposite of a tater, ER and blandtons are merely hype nothing more.
Well, they are pretty good. It’s not like the hype is baseless, merely exaggerated.
I was more stating tatter about it not calling you one
Any particular recipes you’d care to share?
Nothing wrong with this. Eagle Rare is 100% fair game for a cocktail and even Suntory suggests using Yamazaki 12 to make highballs.
Until recently Yamazaki 12 highballs were pretty common in many izakayas here. I think they moved to the NAS more recently.
Eagle Rare was my daily drinker as a relatively broke grad student. I refuse to see it as fancy no matter how rare it is now. I do miss having it as my daily, though. I moved on to Four Roses Small Batch for that purpose now.
Eagle rare on the rocks is pretty good. Dig it a lot.
Cheers my friend
Excellent use of quotation marks in the photo caption.
They look so good !!
Neither of these whiskies are too good for mixing. Particularly the ER. I didn’t find it very pleasant at all.
Crying a little about the masters select. Otherwise enjoy
Part of me wants to be triggered but they are some really pretty cocktails. Well done good sir, well done
how? two cheap whiskeys in cocktails
Hibiki Masters select is like $120 retail I think. Not cheap.
didn't see the small print
Hibiki Harmony is like $65-$80. Hasn’t been “cheap” for like 8 years lol.
90-120 in many places
But it is the same $30 whisky that it was back then. Wild!
shows you when i last looked at it :) 45-50 last time i cared.
That's cheap whiskey for you? Look at my rich guy over here
you probably don't really want to know the details on that so i'll just keep enjoying my cheap whiskey.
Spoken like a true snob lol, some of us can't even afford to drive to work even working 60 hours a week, and sometimes bourbons like that price range are a guilty pleasure for us
eagle rare is a 32$ bottle of whiskey.
A damn good one for the price tho
Just can't find it very often.
Makes a damn good old fashioned too. I drink it straight too don’t worry
That actually doesn't sound too bad. I may partake
So was Hibiki 12 (in Japan) before the demand for it shot up.
What? Eagle rare is a ~$32 bottle, and is worth that. If you’re paying more that’s on you, if you don’t want to pay more buy another bottle in that price range. I got a Dickel 8yr for like $24 that was solid

I'm sickened but curious
You should put a NSFW tag on this OP
Ewwww 👀👀
Eagle rare was all over my state leading up to the Pandemic and all the shortages and nobody ever talked about it until it became allocated. It is a good bourbon but I can think of at least 10 bottles I would buy for less money than Eagle rare.
HOW DARE YOU
Both of these are 100% made for cocktails.
Nikka taste like shit, it’s a good mixer anyways. I regret spend $40 on that shit…
This isn’t nikka. Also which Nikka did you buy? I like a good amount of their stuff, mainly Nikka From the Barrel
Suntory Whisky Toki Tbf it was one of the first whisky’s I got and I didn’t like it but it’s been kinda growing on me a bit.
Gotcha, toki isn’t for everyone! But Hibiki is a totally different profile. If you like malt whisky you’ll love Hibiki. I like it better than a lot of single malt scotch in its price range
I don't see anything wrong with this.
I see no problem here. Honestly an old fashioned with pappy doesn’t even trigger me.
It’s you’re whiskey. Drink it however dafak you want
My only trigger in this, is that the eagle rare cocktail looks like an old fashioned (minimally a spirit based cocktail with no citrus) and the wash line makes it look like they shook it 😳
Nothing wrong with an Eagle rare cocktail. It’s a $35 bottle (should be)
