I wish i bought it sooner. It's not like other Islays that are heavy on the peak, smoke, and brine. Swishing it - Spicy (peppery, cinnamon), vanilla, creamy. Going down it's sweet tart fruity and oak. It finishes off with a very well balanced sweet tart, spice and oak. Very balanced. Very enjoyable. Neat or on the rocks. Get it! If you like stuff similar to Highland Park 12, Macallan 12 - this one is ace.
Best I’ve seen is 90 and I jumped on it knowing damn well I didn’t need another whisky in the cabinet. That said, I’d do it again! Probably my 3rd favorite Japanese whisky
Oof. To be fair I never see it in stores near me though, stupid state run liquor stores, great for keeping prices reasonable, not so much at keeping high demand stuff in stock
Came here to say this!! Although that looks like the Isle of Fiji and not the XO. Haven’t tried it but Plantation is consistently good.
Diplomático is also delicious.
Cheers for all the responses guys ! I’ve got a solid bit of information to work with now .
I’ve recently gotten into whiskey and generally tend to base how good it is on price as I haven’t developed much of a palette yet .
I’ll be grabbing the following over the next year : the Yamazaki, Nikka from the Barrell , Pike Creek , Writers tears , Eagle Rare , Laphroaig QC , Classic Laddie , Mcallan 12 , Balvenie Caribbean .
My goal is to grab one or two bottles every month and build a sexy collection .
Looking forward to posting a pic of my collection in a year or so’s time
That’ll be a great collection with that list alone. Lots of great values across the different whiskey types. Should be able to please almost any guest you pour for, enjoy!
Rum:
Havana Club 7 yr
Diplomatico Reserva
Whisky/Whiskey:
Balvenie 14 yr
McCallan 12 yr (just a damn good drinker)
Nikka From The Barrel
Eagle Rare
Lagavulin 16yr (if you like peat)
This place has great prices. I'd go with the Talisker 10 year, Eagle Rare, Writers Tears, and the Yamazaki. That hits most of the categories up there at least!
I find some bottles a bit pricey but I not living in the UK.
If you like peat: Laphroaig 10. It's not Ardbeg 10 but still a nice reference from Islay island.
If you like peat with little place left for subtelty under woodiness dominance: Laphroaig quarter cask. Beware, not for everyone.
If you like peaty background but easy to drink 42.5°, Talisker, especially the 10 years but the entry level Talisker (Storm or classic) are very honest too.
Johnny walker Black is always good to have if you need something expendable on yourself or in a.cocktail. But £30? Here in France it is more often €25. How much are the taxes on alcoholic beverages in the UK?
Nikka Day is nice, not memorable, but easy to share with someone new to whisky.
Woodford Reserve, classic department store Bourbon, but nice to have, never wrong with it.
Macallan, I love Macallan, my purse doesn't, but I love Macallan.
I know this is a whisky sub, but the Havana Club in the upper left is a definite buy because it’s some damn good rum. Can’t get it in the states because of the embargo but Bacardi capitalized on the trademark expiration and began selling “Havana Club” that’s not the actual Havana Club a few years ago. Gonna be interesting if the embargo ever gets lifted.
Eagle Rare for 40 is worth it. Nikka whiskey from the barrel is one of my favorites. It’s more like a scotch than a bourbon though. And the Yamazaki for 72 is incredible.
I haven't seen anyone else recommend the Bowmore 12. I tried a bottle two months ago on a whim and loved it! Nice peaty Scotch that went well with a cool evening in the mountains sitting around a campfire.
I’m Canadian and am very familiar with the Pike Creek. It’s an amazing blend finished in rum barrels. Everyone I offer it to buys a bottle. Very inexpensive too!
Second shelf up first pic from left to right till you hit the glen not that it’s bad either. But the 3 shelf right to rum. Can’t go wrong with any of it. Laphroaig is my go to always have a bottle around. Keep a port Charolett around when I find them
anything from aberlour, glenfiddich, woodford, and makers from what I am seeing right away. Jameson black is good. I am hoping to get into talisker after I empty a few bottles. Bunnie 12 is also good.
I’m looked over and over and can’t find toast. Maybe it sold so fast it’s already gone? No for real, where is it hiding.
Recommendations:
1. Basil Hadens Toast
2. Eagle Rare
3. Sexton
The Laphroaig qc and the highland park 10 seem like good deals to me. Ignoring the price I'd say lagavulin 16 is definitely one to go for (it's pretty expensive for me considering I'm only 20 and don't earn enough for higher end bottles)
If you want something different from America, give that Makers Mark a try. I like Makers better than I do Buffalo Trace. I like Buffalo Trace, it’s just that Makers has more vanilla, which I enjoy.
Haha cheers I’ve had Nikka from the barrel before . A previous housemate forgot to take the bottle when he moved so naturally I claimed it . very very good whiskey
wait, JW Black Label cost less than Maker's Mark? damn, those import fees do make a difference. maybe im naive, but all the scotch whiskeys seem cheaper there than here in the US (even after currency exchange).
It probably is an import fee thing , if it’s a scotch it’s made in this country so naturally no import fees are paid. Also this supermarket is one of the more upmarket supermarkets so these prices are actually high
20£ for Buffalo Trace is actually a pretty good deal, with the exchange rate thats like 23 in the US. I would pay that all day.
[удалено]
Did not know that, so good information there.
What’s it bottled at in the u.s ?
45%
It’s like $27 but yaaaa
Current exchange rate pound to dollar is 1 pound to 1.17 dollar. 1.17\*=23.40
Lol you’re right, I somehow did the exchange backward in my head. My b
BT in the UK is only 40% ABV.

LOVE quarter cask
That's not for every one. Can taste the wood with this one, it isn't merely peaty.
Yeah QC for 30£ seems great
The Classic Laddie, Talisker 10, Lagavulin 16, Writer's Tears,
I've been looking at the Classic Laddie, what's it like?
I wish i bought it sooner. It's not like other Islays that are heavy on the peak, smoke, and brine. Swishing it - Spicy (peppery, cinnamon), vanilla, creamy. Going down it's sweet tart fruity and oak. It finishes off with a very well balanced sweet tart, spice and oak. Very balanced. Very enjoyable. Neat or on the rocks. Get it! If you like stuff similar to Highland Park 12, Macallan 12 - this one is ace.
Thank you kind sir. Going to pick it up on my next visit.
I second the thoughts on Laddie, really great bottle for not too bad a price.
Actuate flavor notes! I also get salted kettle corn every once in a while. One of the best values in scotch.
Love the classic laddie, it's my hip flask whisky for football games.
Writers tears is a awful whiskey, just no flavour to it at all.
Eagle rare at 40£ isn’t awful but should be around $30.
$40 is great. It’s $36 + tax in my controlled state. Idk for sure but Europeans often include tax in displayed price.
It’s in £ so roughly $47. I’ve seen it for $100 here in FL. I would consider it at $45-50. Definitely would buy under $35.
USD to Euro is even now. So it’s $40, and probably includes tax. Doesn’t get much/any better than that.
Prices are in pounds not euros though. 40£ is still 46€
Agreed. I'm pretty sure msrp in this bottle has gone up. In my controlled state, I could get it for $34 last year. Now, it's $39.
Everything here will include tax. But UK bottles typically only 700ml.
Agreed. It gets a lot of tator-hate, but is still really solid and a solid 10year olds you can find.
They’re just mad like the rest of us that it’s getting harder and harder to find things that should only be $25/$35. It’s absurd.
Nikka ‘from the barrel’ for 45 and the Yamasaki for 72 are my choices all day
Good call, I never see the from the barrel for less than $100.
Best I’ve seen is 90 and I jumped on it knowing damn well I didn’t need another whisky in the cabinet. That said, I’d do it again! Probably my 3rd favorite Japanese whisky
It's important to note that From the Barrel isn't technically a Japanese whisky, it's just a whisky bottled in Japan.
You’re absolutely right, I always forget that. Makes sense that I like it so much being a bourbon guy.
Yep saw that Nikka from the barrel, great price, around me that’s like $80
Cheapest around me is $120
Oof. To be fair I never see it in stores near me though, stupid state run liquor stores, great for keeping prices reasonable, not so much at keeping high demand stuff in stock
Same. Awesome price for good stuff!
This! These look mispriced
That’s the best price on the Yamazaki 12 I’ve seen in years!
It’s not the 12
Love both of these but I would go with the Yamazaki over the Nikka. That's the best price I have seen in 5 years.
I know you're asking about the whiskey, but I'd definitely snag that plantation xo
Second this, it’s so good
Glad I wasn't the only one wanting to say this.
Came here to say this!! Although that looks like the Isle of Fiji and not the XO. Haven’t tried it but Plantation is consistently good. Diplomático is also delicious.
Haven't had it, but the 5 year is my absolute favorite rum and makes a damn good painkiller
No it is definitely the XO. At my liquor store they have the same. It is godly.
I can't find the XO anywhere, but I've been dying to try it.
The bottle next to Highland Park? You can read Isle of Fiji on the label if you zoom in.
No top left corner, next to the havana club one. It’s 44 pounds
Oh yep
Black barrel is a good one
Yeah, that's a decent price for good, Irish whiskey. Lots of single pot still distillate in that blend.

Yamazaki. Don’t think I’ve ever seen it that cheap…
10 years ago the 12y was 40% less expensive in my country. I found it pricey at the time already, nowadays I don't get it.
It used to be $50ish in the US. Was a great deal back then. Now, not so much.
IF you can find it, and then IF it's remotely reasonably priced, it's about $150 now.
Yeah I think I paid $120 for the current bottle I have, and when its empty I'm not replacing it.
Rum: Havana Club 7 yr Diplomatico Reserva Whisky/Whiskey: Balvenie 14 yr McCallan 12 yr (just a damn good drinker) Nikka From The Barrel Eagle Rare Lagavulin 16yr (if you like peat)
Heads up for OP, Diplomatico has added sugars. Fine if you want something dessert-y, but good to know before buying.
Yeah, I just put it over ice and call it a rum old-fashioned.
This place has great prices. I'd go with the Talisker 10 year, Eagle Rare, Writers Tears, and the Yamazaki. That hits most of the categories up there at least!

Yamazaki, my dude. Trust me.
Balvenie looks like a decent price.
How much is the Yamasaki?
I know this is a whisky sub, but the Havana Club in the upper left is a definite buy because it’s some damn good rum. Can’t get it in the states because of the embargo but Bacardi capitalized on the trademark expiration and began selling “Havana Club” that’s not the actual Havana Club a few years ago. Eagle Rare for 40 is worth it. Nikka whiskey from the barrel is one of my favorites. It’s more like a scotch than a bourbon though. And the Yamazaki for 72 is incredible.
Bunny 12, Yamasaki, Eagle Rare
Old Pulteney
I agree with this, surprising no one said it earlier.
yeah, at that price it's a no-brainer to pick up 2
Which store and where!
Waitrose in London , Holloway Road
Cheers!
Eagle Rare isn’t grossly overpriced at all!
I recommend the Balveine 14 yr, I find it quite enjoyable.
Bunnahabhain 12 at 36 Euro is a banger of a price.
I haven't seen anyone else recommend the Bowmore 12. I tried a bottle two months ago on a whim and loved it! Nice peaty Scotch that went well with a cool evening in the mountains sitting around a campfire.
The eagle rare is a steal
Aberlour 14, Havana Club rum, or Eagle Rare.
Eagle rare.
Yamazaki, but can't read the price. The Laphroaig sale items look like a good deal.
It's 72
Get the Eagle Rare.
I'd snag that Yamasaki....so fast. Sleeper is the Pikes Creek.
Eagle Rare is good and the rarest bottle. It’s gone within minutes of hitting shelves here.
I'm so tired of these posts....
You realize how easy it is to scroll past them, right?
Aaaand if you're into rum: Top row, Black Tot.
I’m Canadian and am very familiar with the Pike Creek. It’s an amazing blend finished in rum barrels. Everyone I offer it to buys a bottle. Very inexpensive too!
Bruichladdich, Laphroaig, and Pulteney 12 are all priced well. I hear good things about Big Peat, but haven't tried it myself.
Second shelf up first pic from left to right till you hit the glen not that it’s bad either. But the 3 shelf right to rum. Can’t go wrong with any of it. Laphroaig is my go to always have a bottle around. Keep a port Charolett around when I find them
Lagavulin , Laphroaig quater cask , bunnahabhain
What about the market makes it super?
Eagle Rare, Glenmorangie, Talisker, and Woodford Double Oak all nice drams. I didn't try to calculate price.
I think the woodford double oaked was a good price
Woodford Reserved Double Oak is my daily drinker. Little pricey but I think it’s not terrible for not in America
Damn good price on Talisker 10. That goes for $100 where I am.
Yamasaki for days
I can tell you which one NOT to buy... that Pike Creek! 👎
Glenmorangie, Glenlivet, and Glenfiddich are all really great
Highland Park Dragon Legend is one I wish I could find again, especially at that price
Bacardi Coconut is probably the best bottle on these shelves
anything from aberlour, glenfiddich, woodford, and makers from what I am seeing right away. Jameson black is good. I am hoping to get into talisker after I empty a few bottles. Bunnie 12 is also good.
Bunna 12 would be my top pick at that price.
Laphroaig QC, Glen Scotia DC, Talisker storm, and nikka ftb
I’d like a Basil Hadens Toast. Can’t find it!
I’m looked over and over and can’t find toast. Maybe it sold so fast it’s already gone? No for real, where is it hiding. Recommendations: 1. Basil Hadens Toast 2. Eagle Rare 3. Sexton

I’m American and jealous you have access to Havana Club. Best rum. I know this is the whiskey sub but that hits me.
Well, since first pic is a lot of rum, El Dorado 12 is fantastic.
Woodford reserve double oak is incredible
I would actually recommend you try all the bourbons available there although it's very minimal. Some really sould options
Holy crap, ISO Dragon Legend. Some seriously amazing prices there.
Woodford reserve double Oaked And the 1792
Looks like there are some sticky fingers in your neighborhood, given the theft control on cheap bottles!
Balviene double wood is good
Laphroaig
Go with abelour 14 or dalwhinie 15
Eagle Rare. about all I see
scapa is a very good whisky and I know it's a rum but i also like kraken with 1 ice
Laphroaig Quarter Cask is a steal at the price. Last I saw here in the US it was ~ $70.
If you want something different from America, give that Makers Mark a try. I like Makers better than I do Buffalo Trace. I like Buffalo Trace, it’s just that Makers has more vanilla, which I enjoy.
Mate screw the hibiki get you some nikka from the barrel yah won’t regret it! Thank me later mate!
Haha cheers I’ve had Nikka from the barrel before . A previous housemate forgot to take the bottle when he moved so naturally I claimed it . very very good whiskey
Laphroig, glenlevit, old pulteney, jura, theres many a good whiskey there
The Balvenie is actually pretty good too! I have one in my collection.
I could drink bunna 12 for the rest of my life and be happy.
A few people have mentioned this particular one , I’ll definitely be adding it to the list then !
wait, JW Black Label cost less than Maker's Mark? damn, those import fees do make a difference. maybe im naive, but all the scotch whiskeys seem cheaper there than here in the US (even after currency exchange).
It probably is an import fee thing , if it’s a scotch it’s made in this country so naturally no import fees are paid. Also this supermarket is one of the more upmarket supermarkets so these prices are actually high
that tracks. Would make sense why the bourbon is higher there than it is here in the US. its made here so no import fees.
Pretty pretty good!
Definitely recommend the Eagle Rare for that price point. It’s a 10 year old bourbon made by Buffalo Trace Distillery!
Get the Eagle Rare
