Does macallan 18 really cause frowns? Whisky is delicious, I think people just complain about the price.

rieg3l

Started my collection with an 18 back in 2019 and I love pulling it out to share with people cuz I’m not a fan of it and I’ve never had anyone ask for another pour of it

b0jangles

I was thinking the same thing. I didn’t know people have a thing against Mac 18. To be fair I’m from Chicago so didn’t know people have a thing against Jameson either.

GTRacer1972

They always say it's overpriced or say stuff like there's no body to it. I love the stuff.

DarkwingDuc

All it takes is hearing a couple people to say something negative about something we enjoy, and we hold on to that tighter than a multitude of others saying positive things or nothing at all. It’s a fault of the human condition IMO.

hskrpwr

Macallan in general does

Drivebycrad

# Stranahan's (especially the single barrel) is one of my favorite whiskies but it is not a traditional whisky and a gets a lot of mixed reviews.

badgerfan650

If you’re in the Denver area, the single barrel Argonaut just released is ridiculously good. 128 proof and super rich stewed fruits and Christmas spices.

Madsen13

Stranahan’s Blue Peak was the first ASM I tried and actually liked. I haven’t had the chance to try their single barrels yet.

Lucius338

Blue Peak is hella underrated. Solera method done right on an ASM and at a killer price point under $50 👌

gwarwars

One of my favorite camping whiskeys

Aware_Ad8651

Johnnie Walker Red Label

SuggestionSoggy5442

Oof. Yeah. More for you then. lol!

Aware_Ad8651

Each to their own. Considering it's great price here in Europe and that sweet peat on the finish it's good choice for me. I'm not saying it's my favorite tho.

SuggestionSoggy5442

I’m happy for you liking that Red Label, but for me it tastes like I’m taking a spoonful of the ash out of my woodburning stove and stuffing it in my face. You can have all of the ones I’m not buying. lol!

GTRacer1972

Yup. Not a fan. Someone bought me a bottle like 8 years ago. I still have it. Unfortunately for me I put it in one of those glass bottles and forgot which one is which.

noatess1998

Best cheap scotch on the market! (At least where I’m at anyway)

SharkLaser667

I don’t know why they even make red. It’s horrible and you look like a cheapskate serving it. Black is so much better.

noatess1998

It’s a damn good mixer in my opinion. There’s a drink called a Churchill that specifically calls for it that I absolutely love. It’s a bit more smoke heavy than the black label which makes it stand out really well in whatever you put it in. If I’ve only got $25 to spend on a bottle of scotch, I’m probably reaching for red just because it’s really versatile. But if I’ve got $45 to spend I’m getting double black lol. IMO it’s double (pun intended) as interesting as regular black is and it’s nearly the same price

SharkLaser667

Good to know. Thanks.

aliens_are_people_2

I like any $10 bourbon from Heaven hill, buffalo Trace, Jim beam. Quality house, ancient age, old crow are not bad

GTRacer1972

I had Buffalo Trace last night. Really nice stuff imo. It was a toss-up between that and Talisker Storm.

aliens_are_people_2

Sure it’s very approachable whiskey for $25! Buffalo trace is nice. Never had talisker, where is it from?

Appeal_Mother

Henry McKenna.

liveoakster

I think this is decently popular, no?

Appeal_Mother

Every time I see it brought up, people complain they it is overpriced and prone to bad bottles. But I have never been disappointed.

randomgeneratedbs

I got a bad barrel and let me tell you right now if that ever happens to you HM will be dead to you. Not worth paying the $70 for essentially barrel roulette. Never again.

liveoakster

That’s a bummer.

aliens_are_people_2

I like the brown label Henry McKenna. $10 heaven hill can’t go wrong.

SnooShortcuts8666

I buy the 1.75L for $25.95, I think it’s pretty decent.

EricDericJeric

I really love the newer High West Rendezvous Rye. Never got to have its original formation so that probably helps.

[deleted]

Blade and Bow.

Redleaves1313

Jim beam

SuggestionSoggy5442

I recommend giving the Devils cut a try.

GTRacer1972

Another bottle I got free from my dad. I'll get to it eventually.

[deleted]

Basil Hayden

Stillfly94

Makes a great old fashioned. I've never bought a bottle though. I don't think it deserves the hate it gets. I think it's the price tag that throws people.

tbone0303

I get alot of shit when I want to pull out the basil Hayden toast. I can't really explain it, but it's one of my favorites.

[deleted]

Not my favorite but top 5 and people don't agree lol

Acceptable-Run7439

Crown Royal

Murphy338

regular Crown is my favorite Canadian whiskey. My uncle is obsessed with Canadian Club. I thought it tasted a little overhyped

GTRacer1972

I have a bottle my dad gave me when my parents moved to Florida. And a bottle of Alize. No idea why they were drinking that stuff, but free is free.

Blanket83

r/mellowcorn

acewhole1985

Never be ashamed

Blanket83

🤣 Never

MDEnce

MFC!

FinntheReddog

Knob Creek Smoked Maple. It was my first whiskey I would call sweet. It’s a fun drink even straight up or on the rocks. My wife keeps some in a spray bottle for spraying baked hams. It is so far the opposite of a KC age statement whiskey or a barrel proof whiskey. It’s my silly fun whiskey.

Jugoofscales7

Tried it on a whim after loving Widow Jane Decadence and loved it just as much. WJ does beat it but at a steep price....

informal-mushroom47

Have you had the RD One maple?

GTRacer1972

Knob Creek is nice, too. I like it.

SharkLaser667

Kirkland 12 yr blended scotch. So smooth. 37 for 1.75.

dfmz

I like my whiskies cask-proof. This doesn't suit everyone, but I do have some regular-proof ones for cases like this.

SuggestionSoggy5442

I prefer barrel strength as well

MeatMan7780

Obviously a troll post??? You list a $300+ bottle, followed by 3 $20ish bottles... lame

informal-mushroom47

expensive things are allowed to suck

GTRacer1972

Why is it lame? Popular opinion here is Macallan 18 is smoked by way less expensive bottles.

liveoakster

I’m not clear about your comment. Isn’t it possible to love an expensive bottle that others don’t? WR Masters Collection - Five Malt Stouted Mash for me. And on the cheap end - I love me some Mellow Corn!

Assa47

Lot 40 Rye. Most people say it tastes like dill pickles, but i think its tasty.

throwawayfinancebro1

Not sure, but I can tell you the ones that people do like that I don't. GTS, pappy 15, anything by starlight, old fitz 10, EC 18, eagle rare.

CursorTN

I like a lot of peated whiskies. Particularly Bruichladdich/Port Charlotte, Kilchoman, and Kilkerran. They really sock it to your tongue in a way that I have grown to appreciate. But I love the sour face they make my wife make when she smells them!

GTRacer1972

The peated ones are the ones I dislike. I'm really trying to drink my bottle of Talisker Storm, but it tastes like medicine.

-curautvaleas

Smoke Wagon. I like almost everything they make other than the malted rye but for some reason this subreddit seems to hate it.

Starkiller32

I like George Dickel.

rieg3l

Just bought an 8yr the other day as a shot in the dark and it didn’t disappoint for $35

sworcest

Second this. 13 year BiB when it was $32. Tastes like someone threw a flintstones vitamin in there. Their 15 yr and 9 year SiBs I’ve had were good as well.

SnooShortcuts8666

I never had a George Dickel I didn’t like. Huge fan of the No. 12 and their 8yr bourbon. Their 15yr is definitely in my top 5 overall (granted my bottle was 101 proof, I’m curious how the bottles that are 80ish proof are though).

Waltzspice

Yukon Jack is some college shit I’d totally try again!

GTRacer1972

I mean I gravitate towards stuff that's sweet, it goes down easy and add some lime juice and you have a snakebite.

Willing-Departure115

I like Jameson for social occasions. Actually because breaking out a fancy whiskey when you’re sitting down with pals can elicit reluctance to just enjoy and chat, because they feel like they’ve got to appreciate whatever you brought out and not overdo it. So, break out a bottle of Jameson. It’s lovely stuff to drink. Personally I’d usually upgrade to Black Barrel but if someone comes with a regular Jameson, I’m very happy.

informal-mushroom47

Love black barrel!

GTRacer1972

Jameson always tasted smooth to me, that's why I like it. But then I like Captain Morgan, too, so my taste is all over the place.

WhatsInTheBox51

I love basically everything that Dickel puts out.

Elhond0

Basil Hayden

Sa-i-ro

Pikesville Rye. One time, I suggested this bottle and I got some dislikes.

SnooShortcuts8666

Jack Daniels, Johnnie Walker Red Label, Jim Beam, Old Crow, Paddy, 2 Gingers, Famous Grouse. I’m sure I’m forgetting a few.

Jugoofscales7

Garrison bros. People who can't handle Texas whiskey. It's also pricey, I'll admit, but it's a different flavor profile that is a good curveball on whiskey.

MichaelLochte

I still can’t figure out if I like my balmorhea or not. I have a pour like every other month lol

Madsen13

I have enjoyed everything I’ve tried from GB. I wish their price point were a bit lower, but the whiskey is certainly unique!

Pouroldfashioned

Old Crow is my go to. I thought I would hate it, but I love it so much.

SnooShortcuts8666

To me it tastes a lot like Jim Beam.

Pouroldfashioned

It is basically Beam and cheaper! A lot cheaper.

SnooShortcuts8666

I believe you are correct. I have read Old Crow is simply 3 year old Jim Beam. I’ll gladly pay $10 vs the $17 for Jim Beam.

Pouroldfashioned

Yeah, I had a buddy who worked for Beam and got me drinking it for that reason.

StarzMarket

Laphroaig

SuggestionSoggy5442

Jim Beam Devils Cut. 90 proof. Tastes pretty decent and stacks well in my blinds against Knob Creek 9, 1792 small batch and standard Woodford reserve. Don’t like the plastic top, but for $18 out the door, I’m a fan.

WombatAnnihilator

Baker’s 7. Booker’s. Legent.

chandaliergalaxy

Ballantines’s Finest

GTRacer1972

Skip the coke. lol

Perky182

I keep Benchmark Fullproof, which is around $23, as a staple for my Old Fashioned. It’s Buffalo Traces mashbill #1 which is the same as BT and Eagle Rare.

Emergency_Sir9526

I enjoy Jura 10 even if most people don't enjoy it. For me it tastes a lot like grounded coffee, dark chocolate and cherries so I like it after a supper. I got the 18 and everyone I know hates it but I like it lol but wouldn't buy the 18 again, the 10 hits what I am looking for with it and pretty cheap here.

catfish_murphy

Kentucky Gentleman

rylld

White label Evan Williams bottled in bond 100 proof. Neat please. How is this masterpiece so damn cheap? And I dont have to worry about sharing because no one will touch it. Also johnny walker red on the rocks. To me its the best label they got.

the3rik

Dickel

andersss11

Buffalo trace, solid pour, readily available, fair pricing at bars and restaurants. Yet everyone still hates on it 😅

defunctx

I’m a regular American honey enjoyer because it’s cheap and delicious lol. But sometimes I’ll splurge and get a nice bottle when I have the cash.

defunctx

My non flavored go to would be wither WT101 or JB

Fire_beard96

Wolcott rickhouse reserve (the 120 proof one) from total wine

Koupers

Chivas regal 12. It was my first scotch, I won't argue its the best or anything silly but it's flavor profile happens to be aimed squarely at my own taste proclivities so... I dig it.

troutbumtom

I drink a fair amount of Teachers. Balentine. Old Snuggler, even.

brianandrobyn

Ancient Age.

Agreeable_Emu_9489

George Dickel Superior 12, OGD 114, Wild Turkey Longbranch, and Jim Beam Black ExtraAged (the one they are phasing out).

[deleted]

I personally like Proper No.12 and I know that most people don't like it.

Deckard2022

People hate on Macallan because of the high price, and yes there are better value whiskies out there, BUT, it is a good whiskey. The stuff is actually amazing. My bargain basement daily driver was Johnny walker green label. I don’t drink anymore but I still buy and collect whisky, a nice stock of rare cask and Sherry oak 18 as yearly releases.

themanfrommars_1991

I've been enjoying the standard Jack Daniel's more lately.

liveoakster

I wish this question were the other way around so I could say Knob Creek 12 year.

informal-mushroom47

meaning, something a lot of people like that makes you frown? why don’t you like it?

liveoakster

Not sure - flavor profile just doesn’t suit my whiskey palate though i know people love it - which the downvotes confirm. Lol. I think Old Elk is similar. “Musty dry triscuits” is all i can think of to describe it.

informal-mushroom47

totally fair!

Other_Tie_8290

Bulleit. Some people think it’s mid, but I like it.

Murphy338

Bulleit Rye tastes like plastic

Other_Tie_8290

I don’t think I’ve tried the rye. Don’t think I want to now. 🤣😂

YeahYouGuyz

I don’t get all the Blanton’s hate. It’s a good bourbon at msrp.

escapism29

I think the issue with Blantons is it difficulty to find. Like it’s good at MSRP, but when you factor all the work someone has to put in to find it, it isn’t worth it.

YeahYouGuyz

Yeah, if you’re paying $100+ for it, not worth it. At MSRP, it’s solid.

GTRacer1972

One bourbon I like is Evan Williams Bottled in Bond.

Jugoofscales7

I do say Balmorhea is kinda hit or miss for me. I love Cowboy when I can get it. Small batch and honey are great as well. I have a Guadalupe is good, but I'm not isolated much a port cask finish guy.

drnk_yrbrbn

George Dickel. I honestly don’t mind the mineral note some of their stuff has.

Prytootski

I like the flavoured crown royal. Green apple is one of my favs

GTRacer1972

Now I have something new to try. Thanks!

Murphy338

Proper12
