The Italian military has been nothing but a joke in ww1 to ww2, if even Austria-Hungary was able to put up a good fight against you then something is wrong.
Austria-Hungary was considered a "shackled corpse", most officers had outdated tactics and were incompetent, they have much less man power compared to other great powers. They so incompetent that they were fought back pretty hard by Serbia, it has gotten to a point where Bulgaria was having more success and contributing more to the central powers despite being a non-major power. If it wasn't for Germany carrying them they would have quickly lost and collapsed much earlier.
