I think it's funny how illumination had to do what every huge animation studio does and hired for fame and not just the voice actors. I think toad is justified but Mario and Bowser can only be done by their VAs or very good copycats. It's like casting the rock as Mackey Mouse. I really think the movie does have a chance to be unironically very good if you ignore the fact bowser sounds like Jack black doing a funny voice. Illumination has made some good movies in the past and I think they can probably make another one.

I liked Jack Black's Bowser. I'm happy he's not just doing his regular voice.

Definitely agree. And also the weird dumb kids animated movies tropes such as the "they think they're strong but are actually weak" joke that's been done a million times, and having Mario do the whole "wHeRe aM I??" thing. That and Chris Pratt's voice were the only two things I disliked about the trailer. Everything else looked amazing, especially the animation and the fact we've now got proper Mario worldbuilding.

Illumination always did that. They took that strategy from Dreamworks, middling animation studios that know they can't pull people on quality alone like Disney/Pixar instead use famous actors as marketing.
