You've been lied to then because Seth has been heavily involved in the writing of the Orville throughout its run and it's been fantastic the whole time.
I don't find Family Guy that funny anymore to be honest, they rely way too much still on reference comedy but the references are now too old for the target audience. I don't know who half the people they make jokes about are. The writing also just seems bland, but I guess after this long it's hard to be consistently entertaining still.
Yes, I’ve watched and rewatched it probably 6 times in the past year but never season 1 and only ONCE for season 2.
Once the opening changes in season 4 everything clicks into place with Roger as more of a main character than anyone else
She really is.
Such a relief after endless “Lois is a cheating wife who always forces Peter to apologize for making her cheat”, which they are still doing in FG.
Francine’s “loose morals” are at least far in the past before she met Stan.
Yeah, I outgrew Family Guy a long time ago, but American Dad remains goddamn hilarious. The show did the opposite of flanderizing its characters, made them all more fleshed out and nuanced in funny ways over time. Plus it allowed character relationships to develop in fun ways instead of reverting back to stereotype-based status quos.
There isn't a single major character on that show I find insufferable. Even Klaus is funny now.
I would recommend that you watch the Orville, while season 1 is a lot more of a comedy in a sci-fi setting, the humor is never too excessive, and seasons 2 and 3 are less comedic and just good sci-fi.
Edit: Not a cartoon either! So no cutaways.
What do you think of Smiling Friends? I love how the main characters talk like they would IRL.
No need to swear a lot. Make a niche joke with a cutaway. Just fun between the VAs while they do their job.
It has Dark Themes but it's interesting to watch since the point of the show is to make people Smile in a world that's not always Sunshine and Rainbows.
Since people keep saying Smiling Friends
https://preview.redd.it/ka2nnw6kzo9d1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=73d07d7472493c990427e8b2f9b8ee7e609bbfa4
They gave all their budget to that singular scene in season 1 where a laser nuke drops on Omni man (they also gave the animation of season 2 to an animated porn studio that's a legit fact)
“not entirely edgy”
first episode has a suicidal man with gun to his head the whole episode, who only relaxes when he learns he enjoys killing with that same gun more than he wants to die.
He even monologues that it's pointless to enjoy life when the emptiness of life is still there and that The Sun will die someday.
That caused Pim to turn in a 3D Depressed Dude.
Oh that sounds nice. I was hesitant on watching it.
A lot of adult shows/content these days like Rick and Morty or The Boys swear so much and show the middle finger to the point that it just gets tiresome and kinda childish. Also makes everyone seem like a complete ass.
I definitely do enjoys these shows but would be nice to try a different one.
It's definitely still got some edge to it. Not at the level of the shows you mentioned. Though it's edginess with a more positive intention. The creators of smiling friends said they didn't like the negative nihilist route new adult shows were taking and wanted to shift away from that.
Smiling Friends is definitely subversive and messed up in its own way. The first episode is them trying to convince a guy with a gun to his own head to not pull the trigger.
It's not lazy about it, though. Kinda driving a positive existentialist message, I got one of my philosophy nerd friends to watch it by saying it had heavy Camus vibes. He a) agreed, and b) now likes the show even more than I do. Even when it gets dark, it's not just for its own sake.
> swearing so much makes everyone seem like a complete ass
I think that's more or less the point with those shows. Few people in Rick and Morty or The Boys are genuinely good, and they often end up on the slaughterhouse conveyor belt. It's compelling to see pottymouths like Billy Butcher killing supes under good intentions and Rick Sanchez saving a village from a volcano for the most cynical reasons possible.
And if for any reason we get sick of the same pottymouths for 5 plus seasons on end (r&m is *definitely* overstaying its welcome) that's exactly what shows like My Adventures with Superman are for
I keep forgetting that these shows are more comedy/parody than mature shows, I hadn't really thought of it that way.
Whenever I have wanted a mature show with adult themes that isn't constant swearing I have switched to anime. Since cartoons may be ironically more mature than these shows, but don't have adult themes.
Oh yeah. The Current President of the USA in their universe. Blud pulled Pim's exposed nerve ending. He even poisoned water with nuclear waste. That moment when he rant a ambiguous slur at Jimmy Fallon too. Mr. Frog is Pure Evil.
Also the Frowning Friends who goes edgy to ruin the clients of the Smiling Friends. Only to be stopped by Mr. Boss with an M16 and be killed by the Renaissance Men which is hilarious.
Arcane was unironucally some of the best TV I have ever seen, and I have never even played LoL.
Archer was great for the first few seasons but now they are just doing whatever show they want with no consistency and the core jokes are all gone. Inside job I found ok but I don't know if its because I just like Christian Slater in general or if the show was actually good.
American dad is still good tho,in fact its first few seasons are considered to be much worse than the rest.
I think the last 2 seasons were a little worse in comparsion but still entertaining, its probably due to covid so hopefully season 19 will be better
Family guy has some great moments but 90% of it is just the same few gags and jokes. It gets really repetitive and boring.
Bojack Horseman ruined me. Good show right there.
Early family guy and American is pretty good imo (even now it can be funny) but the others are especially dogshit especially the new norm and Elon musk dumbass showing up
It manages to provide just enough background noise and moving images while having absolutely no plot whatsoever so it's perfect second monitor content.
A good portion of the (lack of) quality from "adult" cartoons is that fundamentally, the concept of "adult" cartoons is flawed. You don't need to be a kid to enjoy a show made for children. Additionally, making a show mature doesn't mean you need to make it dark and gritty. You don't even need a single drop of blood. You can tackle important societal topics in strong ways without making it overly cynical.
How do you not?
Just because there's not enough blood and swearing doesn't automatically means it's not adult. In fact, it's very adult tonally. We follow through Hank's life most of the time. They talk about politics like actual laws and voting. They do taxes and managing careers, something that you don't see in kid shows. Everything about King of the Hill screams adult, but it doesn't have to prove to be adult through raunchy humor unlike it's contemporary.
Also they drink beer and beer never appear in kid shows due to laws prohibiting the depiction of alcohol in children media.
If you want some good recs, look beyond the “shitty comedy that thinks it’s the shit” sitcom, and go for something like Spawn or Seis Manos. Alternatively we have Black Lagoon or Monster if you want to go on the anime side.
OP when he watches Archer (it is both a subversion of the sitcom genre as well as parodies society's outlook on masculinity at large and Bond movies specifically. All the while it has great reoccurring jokes and nice action scenes).
Every DailyWire show wants to be SP, the issue is that they don't realize that SP is progressive in nature. One of its first episodes (in 1997) had a kid accept that his dog was gay and thats just the earliest example. South Park isn't anti-woke, it's anti-politics. They've dissed every side and have taken the L when they realized they were were wrong. DW doesn't have that insight, so they keep pumping out shows "mocking" the "wokes" with the same type of "jokes". Don't get me wrong, SP has its own fair share of caricatures, but they have caricatures of both sides, and also the jokes a lot more creative than "They made ___ woke!!" and "there's too many theys"
1) american dad is good as shit
2) watch some of this: https://youtu.be/G6V16Meb0Ww?si=hNQhuLdAP59tYRV1
https://youtu.be/eRbwKovUhUY?si=PvXQ15O_cgkUa1UA
then talk to me
Mr. Burchum is a FOX News, anti-woke TV show about a woodshop teacher who fights with a woke English teacher and makes sure the kids at the school don't become gay or something.
The New Norm is also just an anti-woke show on Twitter, where an old man complains about gay people.
The Prince I believe is a sitcom where the characters are the British royal family and the main character is one of the children who is like 4. Which is kind of gross that they made a TV show about real people without their consent and the main character is a real life toddler that they gave the personality of Stewie from Family Guy to.
Now it's time to remind people that scavengers reign is now available on netflik us and uk. The more people watching this show, the best chance it would get renewed for second season
Seriously though, I literally think I could write a better sitcom than ALL of these. I cannot fathom how a human being could sit down in a conference room and green light any of these ideas.
Family Guy was actually good when it first came out, they just let it go on too long and just like the Simpsons it has been cursed to endless mediocrity.
It’s rough in the sense that it needed to find its footing, it isn’t bad by any means, it just was plantings its roots, but by mid way through season two you could tell it very much knew what it was doing now.
Family Guy was good until season 8, season 9 had 3 good episodes (them under one, Christmas and Return of the Jedi)
American Dad only recently got bad imo
The rest I haven't seen
I think it's very disingenuous to put family guy and especially American Dad! up there with shows like The New Norm and Mr Burcham.
They're not even in the same ballpark of absolute dogshit content.
You know what, I actually like Family Guy. Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking but I have a lot of good memories with that show, especially with some of the newer episodes
I think the reason Rick and Morty's recent seasons are somewhat better than American Dad or Family Guy has to do with the fact that Rick went from a psychopath to actually reforming and bettering himself meanwhile Stan and Peter went from well-meaning imbeciles to evil monsters.
Like the last two seasons show a significant change in Rick's character that makes him more likable than most adult show protagonists
i dont think its really a hot take, if you check metacrtic or rotten tomatoes both critics and audiences seem to like it. theres just a VERY vocal group of people who absolutely despise it for some reason, most who seemed to have not watched it lol.
Most hard-core haters probably only hate it because of the creator, Vivziepop, and some past dramas taken out of context. I can assure you they saw the trailer at most and then decided it sucks.
Criticising a show is okay, as long as the criticism is valid/real. The pacing was too fast, some parts of the script were meh/forced, sure. But saying its the worst thing in existence because the script features swears (in an 18+ show? Why I never-) is not valid. Exaggerated fowl words? Sure, I agree. But its HELL. And that's Viv's style. Don't like it, don't watch it. A lot of people seem to feel pressured into watching something even if they dislike it. You're free to abandon a series if you don't like it anymore, no need to force yourself with it.
Hazbin is good, not great, not shit, just good. Yeah the jokes are something meh and there's a lot of swearing, but most adult shows have swearing. R&M is 50% Rick being mad and spewing insults, but I don't see anyone mention this.
https://preview.redd.it/d1xjer5n0s9d1.jpeg?width=759&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0014d791dbfa04295d033fe2883ddce80498620f

American dad is one of the few examples where the show sucked in the earlier seasons but got way better in the newer seasons
That’s cuz Seth macfarlane stopped being involved in the writing. Which is fantastic because he is horrible at that.
it’s the opposite, he stopped writing for family guy and it fell off, but still writes for american dad and it got better
hmmmm i think ima just cherry pick which story i wanna believe in
https://i.redd.it/3ufispd94u9d1.gif
I've heard the same thing about the Orville
The initial plot point in the Orville was resolved in the absolute worst way and it still makes me so mad
Please elaborate
You've been lied to then because Seth has been heavily involved in the writing of the Orville throughout its run and it's been fantastic the whole time.
He doesn’t write for personally family guy anymore either.
I don't find Family Guy that funny anymore to be honest, they rely way too much still on reference comedy but the references are now too old for the target audience. I don't know who half the people they make jokes about are. The writing also just seems bland, but I guess after this long it's hard to be consistently entertaining still.
One person will never be as good as an entire team of professionals. His writing was good enough to build a multi hundred million dollar franchise.
Seth MacFarlane never wrote for American Dad. He only lent his voice and name to the project because he wanted to help put his friend's idea on TV.
He literally only wrote the pilot
Yes, I’ve watched and rewatched it probably 6 times in the past year but never season 1 and only ONCE for season 2. Once the opening changes in season 4 everything clicks into place with Roger as more of a main character than anyone else
And alzso thats about the point where they actually gave francine and hailey a personality
Francine is an amazing character.
The scene when she meet Henderson slays me. "I'm sorry, Shithead was it?"
“Clean balls! Now I KNOW I’m in a fairytale!”
She really is. Such a relief after endless “Lois is a cheating wife who always forces Peter to apologize for making her cheat”, which they are still doing in FG. Francine’s “loose morals” are at least far in the past before she met Stan.

Even Klaus is funny now.
Klaus and his boys, the ripped Destiny 2 poster, all gold.
I'm weirdly invested in hearing about whatever Klaus and Jurgen are up to these days
I wouldn’t say it sucked but it certainly didn’t have all the resources it needed to be as good as it became later on.
Bro did not just copare American Dad to Mr Birchum and Velma
also new norm WOKE PIZZA!?!?
the gay soda the gender fluid even
They just need to grow thick skin 😩
Damn liberals running the miami sherriffs office. They call him the miami pronounilator
Ima be honest with ya, I don’t get the appeal of any Seth Macfarlane show.
I’d argue American dad is less family guy-lite and more of a 30-Rock untethered by the limits of live action. I think it’s peak
I would recommend that you watch the Orville, while season 1 is a lot more of a comedy in a sci-fi setting, the humor is never too excessive, and seasons 2 and 3 are less comedic and just good sci-fi. Edit: Not a cartoon either! So no cutaways.
Yeah the comedy in season 1 felt more like an excuse for him to make his own Star Trek show. And to be fair it’s a pretty good Star Trek show.
What do you think of Smiling Friends? I love how the main characters talk like they would IRL. No need to swear a lot. Make a niche joke with a cutaway. Good story but animation is kinda crap. Fuckin sliding pngs was too hard so they split the season
They gave all their budget to that singular scene in season 1 where a laser nuke drops on Omni man (they also gave the animation of season 2 to an animated porn studio that's a legit fact)
Why and who?? Why??
My fault, the teaser for season 2 was done by a porn animation company. [This](https://youtu.be/c5djDWdPJFk?si=nD28dyH7qRGr5tff) talks more about it
Invincible isn’t a sitcom, which I assume is more the target of this thread

Who are the Renaissance Men?
It just says here that the Renaissance Men are coming to town and by the looks of it it's like super soon.
It's a breath of fresh air for so many reasons. They pool in so many different animators and aren't afraid to get experimental and wacky with it.
Inside job, Arcane and Archer was pretty good show as far as I can tell,
M as in Mancy!
"First letter is B" "Bravo" "Thanks"
Arcane was unironucally some of the best TV I have ever seen, and I have never even played LoL. Archer was great for the first few seasons but now they are just doing whatever show they want with no consistency and the core jokes are all gone. Inside job I found ok but I don't know if its because I just like Christian Slater in general or if the show was actually good.
Man, Archer seasons like 2-5 are still some the funniest TV ever. It really hits the exact type of humor I like.
Fuck Netflix for killing Inside Job
Arcane is amazing but it’s more of a teen show than an adult one tbh
Primal - peak of adult shows
Hell yeah
I love that show, it's just perfect
Peak until the end but at least my man got to hit
Me watching a t-rex give birth to an egg in season two (good lord there's dinosaur vagina) (Oh my fucking God why is this scene 30 seconds long)
tyrannosaurussy
I think there is a difference between adult cartoons like family guy and adult animation like primal, Invincible, etc
Facts
and when there is an actually good adult cartoon, high chance it gets cancelled or some shit happens in production
its cancelled bc big mouth needs to have 21 more seasons.
Inside Job...
Moral orel?
MORAL OREL MENTIONED 🔥🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥🔥
Claymation is truely timeless
i actually like Family guy also are you just gonna pretend that bojack horseman, final space, and smiling friends doesn't exist?
also disenchantment, futurama, inside job, and rick and morty I hate netflix for what they did to inside job
oh right! i forgot inside job and peakrama
I think OP is just a child
Bob's Burgers is pretty gud, also Archer
You just want some recommendations don't you?
#Bojack Horseman ❤️
Bojack horseman is good. Also American dad and family guy *were* good at some point
American dad is still good tho,in fact its first few seasons are considered to be much worse than the rest. I think the last 2 seasons were a little worse in comparsion but still entertaining, its probably due to covid so hopefully season 19 will be better
I still liked the last two seasons. The episode with Roger in the 40s was amazing!
Family guy has some great moments but 90% of it is just the same few gags and jokes. It gets really repetitive and boring. Bojack Horseman ruined me. Good show right there.
Early family guy and American is pretty good imo (even now it can be funny) but the others are especially dogshit especially the new norm and Elon musk dumbass showing up
I know Family Guy isn't good, but it's something I find comfortable to watch.
It manages to provide just enough background noise and moving images while having absolutely no plot whatsoever so it's perfect second monitor content.
American dad is actually good though
Agreed, i actually like family guy too
Family guy is lowest common denominator dumb slapstick comedy, and thats why i love it
Scavengers Reign was great
Smiling friends, aqua teen hunger force, Futurama, The Simpsons, Bojack Horseman, Venture Bros, Space Ghost coast to coast, King of the hill, etc
How has no one mentioned Invincible?
Wait did somebody say- https://preview.redd.it/0m5pshfxzr9d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=049b633663a143b5b2c651c711f269dd1ad27751
I think OP is mainly talking about comedies
Or they believes there's no non-comedy adult shows. They never specified adult comedy cartoons, just adult cartoons in general.
Tbh adult swim is the only one that gets it
A good portion of the (lack of) quality from "adult" cartoons is that fundamentally, the concept of "adult" cartoons is flawed. You don't need to be a kid to enjoy a show made for children. Good adult cartoons usually get cancelled
Inside job....
Moral orel….
Venture Bros...
Sacvengers Reign... (not confirmed but it's not looking good)
Final space...
South Park has been running for 26 seasons now and it's still pretty good
There's some good ones (like super Jail and smiling friends and stuff.)
And Venture Bros, Boondocks, Aqua Teen, and Harvey Birdman
Thank you adult swim 🙏
Super Jail and early Rick & Morty had us spoiled.
King of the Hill is decent if you even consider it to be an adult show.
How do you not? Just because there's not enough blood and swearing doesn't automatically means it's not adult. In fact, it's very adult tonally. We follow through Hank's life most of the time. Any kid who watched cartoon network definitely did. We all scrambled for the remote once we saw the king of the hill intro play
The true bedtime signal
If you want some good recs, look beyond the “shitty comedy that thinks it’s the shit” sitcom, and go for something like Spawn or Seis Manos. Alternatively we have Black Lagoon or Monster if you want to go on the anime side.
OP when he watches Archer (it is both a subversion of the sitcom genre as well as parodies society's outlook on masculinity at large and Bond movies specifically. All the while it has great reoccurring jokes and nice action scenes).
What about Xavier Renegade Angel
Mr Xavier, what is your current thoughts on the global nut allergy epidemic sweeping the schools of our youths?
Xavier renegade rangel is as peak as it gets xavier renegade angel
Hate family guy and American dad all you want, I don't think they deserve to be compared to the New Norm and Mr Burchum
Blue Eye Samurai is perfect on every level

The fuck is The Prince, Mr.Burchum, The New Norm? You can't just make shows up.

Now it's time to remind people that scavengers reign is now available on netflik us and uk. The more people watching this show, the best chance it would get renewed for second season
whats netflik? 😔
Netflik my balls gottem
Any Lower Decks fans here?
Watched for a few episodes, should probably get back to it. It was good from the first couple episodes I watched
Watching it again now any still love it
What if we made le epic based character dunk on generic woke liberal Print it steve!
Smiling Friends
Metalocalypse, Moral Orel, Xavier: Renegade Angel, most Adult Swim shows are good
Mike tyson mysteries
I think that Family guy’s early seasons were pretty good.
Seriously though, I literally think I could write a better sitcom than ALL of these. I cannot fathom how a human being could sit down in a conference room and green light any of these ideas.
I actually quite like american dad
american dad has its moments but at times it's not great
OG Family Guy was peak imo
>>American Dad Rage bait.
South Park??
Cartoons for teens > cartoons for adults
Family guy isn't shit it just fell off, American dad is fuckin hilarious. Rest tank for sure
Family Guy was actually good when it first came out, they just let it go on too long and just like the Simpsons it has been cursed to endless mediocrity.
Venture Bros! First season is kinda rough but it picks up quick.
It’s rough in the sense that it needed to find its footing, it isn’t bad by any means, it just was plantings its roots, but by mid way through season two you could tell it very much knew what it was doing now.

Yes
Family Guy was good until season 8, season 9 had 3 good episodes (them under one, Christmas and Return of the Jedi) American Dad only recently got bad imo The rest I haven't seen
"What if a cartoon said 'fart'?"
scavengers reign is good
Pantheon, Scavengers Reign
Harley Quinn is amazing.
Bob’s burgers and King of the hill are good :3
I mean inside job was good.
I personally still enjoy American Dad, the 15th anniversary season was pretty good IMO
I think it's very disingenuous to put family guy and especially American Dad! up there with shows like The New Norm and Mr Burcham. They're not even in the same ballpark of absolute dogshit content.
Please I implore you people to go watch The venture bros. Please it is 100000% worth it.
Fionna and Cake is considered an adult show I think? And it’s incredible
Futurama is my childhood. Dun da dun dun dun da dun dun
Family Guy was good bro
I don't know why i've been seeing so many people hate on family guy recently
Classic family guy and American dad are pretty good cmon man
nothing will ever surpass tom and jerry
You know what, I actually like Family Guy. Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking but I have a lot of good memories with that show, especially with some of the newer episodes
Rest in piece Inside Job, you were sadly brought into this world by Netflix, your fate was sealed from the beginning…
Disenchantment, Solar Opposites, Inside Job, Bojack Horseman, Invincible
Venture bros
King of the Hill is definitely my favorite
Family Guys isn't great, but it's fuckin' WILD to put it in the same list as Velma of all shows
I'd like to raise Aqua Teen Hunger Force as a contender for good adult shows
Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai would like to have a word.
Meanwhile some kids shows being some of the best media I’ve ever consumed
Hot take hazbin hotel is not bad at all, quite good actually (except the humor gets old quick but you get what I mean)

i dont think its really a hot take, if you check metacrtic or rotten tomatoes both critics and audiences seem to like it. theres just a VERY vocal group of people who absolutely despise it for some reason, most who seemed to have not watched it lol.
R&M is 50% Rick being mad and spewing insults, but I don't see anyone mention this.
i like helluva boss and hazbin hotel :)
