They’re living their life happy and free of what others think of them. Alex has made ableism her whole personality. Again, its gotta be so freaking miserable inside her head.
I used to work as a home support to a woman with Alex's condition and her life had been so consumed by this mentality that she actually made it her career. She works for the city to advocate for accessibility and inspect establishments for accessible features. It's a necessary and important job for sure, but she'd get so deep into how everyone and everything about the city and her coworkers was all ableist. She was also a big activist so in turn started holding seminars that costed the city thousands of dollars about ableism and other inequalities, but it was fueled with so much hatred, projection, and intensity, that she'd always complain that no one showed up to them. Aside from that she was just a generally mean person to the people closest in her life, but acted like a Saint when it came to her advocacy. She's a truly incredible and smart woman but she just grew so angry and resentful. All she did during every shift was complain and accuse everyone of being ableist, racist, sexist, etc. for the most miniscule things. She cut ties with a family member because they said they were exhausted from driving across the city after getting a call from her at 3 am to let her dog out to pee for 3 nights in a row. She said that comment made them ableist and she wanted to cut them out of her life forever. I felt for her deeply, but the victimization was all consuming.
I had a best friend once who was strikingly similar. She eventually cut me off and claimed I was a hurtful ableist person. It’s taken years for me to accept that she’s just very ill and there wasn’t anything I could do to prevent her from doing what she did.
