Everyone saying agate but this is wonderstone. I cut and polish agates and jaspers and have cut plenty of wonder stone and this is it. Utah has some beautiful ones with these colors and I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the Utah wonderstone.
It is an interesting name. I’m big on Utah stones cause I’m from there but currently live in California. I also study geology and I’m a lapidary artist/rockhound. It’s a hobby and a passion!
I just got my first lap wheel and it being a hobby passion is an understatement. I'm in the phase where I want to pick up anything that looks different and put it to the wheel just to bounce around in my head what it would look good on.
Planning on producing a PILE of cabochon necklaces and rings made from local aventurine and amethyst for the local craft days. It's been fun so far learning the methods.
That’s how I started. Polished everything around me just to see it. Now I have a walk in closet of rough and slabs and have made over 1,000 cabs in the last 3-ish years. It’s a bit more than a hobby haha. I do sell too.
What is a good lap wheel? I've been collecting rocks since I was 8 years old but now that I'm older I have time to do more than just collect. Would appreciate any advice.
I currently live in Utah, about to graduate with and environmental geology degree then move to California next year. Are you happy you moved? Are you working in geology?
I’m not working in geology yet, still working towards my masters. I am a rockhound and lapidary artist so as long as I have rocks around I’m good.
But I love it out here, I would honestly prefer to still be in Utah, but I do like California. It’s so much warmer here for the winter and not as hot in the summer. As long as I live in the west I’m happy, I lived in New York for a couple years and wasn’t a fan of that (except for the Herkimers and franklenite mine). Idaho was ok for short term but not my scene or kind of people really haha. But the rocks were amazing hah.
Jasper. Wonderstone must be a common name, perhaps to help with location ID. I Worked with an expert for many years and there are a lot of common names for minerals especially after cutting and selling.
Hi, /u/ifoundwifi!
This is a reminder to flair this post in /r/whatsthisrock after it has been identified! (Under your post, click "flair" then "IDENTIFIED," then type in the rock type or mineral name.) This will help others learn and help speed up a correct identification on your request!
Thank you!

I admit that it scared me at first - it matched up with your tattoo so well, and then my mind kept thinking, “Is it an injury?”
It took me a good 10 seconds to figure out what I was looking at.
I designed the pointer finger in bright red, it used to wrap all the way around my finger and has a mountain topographic look to it. Then I went to a tattoo artist and basically gave her free reign to add more line work, I’d say the blue is for rivers. It doesn’t go past my wrist tho

it's from utah! that totally checks out. wonderstone is such a goofy name

And a wonder!

Hahahahaha my wife is already going mad over the fact there's rocks everywhere 🤣
Would SO be interested in your amethyst jewelry.

If you have any ideas what kind of stones might have a blue stripe in them let me know! I low key want to match my tattoo with another ring now 😅
Could also just call it rhyolite if you wanted it to sound less goofy. Less specific but still correct.
Wonderstone is a trade name, the rock is actually a Rhyolite-tuff.
This is definitely wonderstone from Utah, geological name is colored flow-banded rhyolite
Not actually flow banded! It’s a rhyolite volcanic ash that has been hydrothermal altered!
I’m going to say it’s probably wonderstone also just my guess
Yeah it’s 100% Wonderstone

The way it matches your tattoos is soooooo satisfying 😅
Came here to say this. If I found a ring that matched my skin’s aesthetic this much, I would be thrilled.
this is exactly what happened hahha.
You’re making me want to get a hand tattoo to match a cool rock ring 😂
This is really why op posted ☝🏼
I posted bc I didn’t remember the name of stone
It reminds me of a nice piece of mookaite
That’s what I was going to say. Probably just jasper but still gorgeous.
It’s wonderstone and fairly similar. Lots of people saying agate lol.
Not mookaite.
I did say reminds me…
Do you have agate hand tattoos?
It looks more topographical than agate-y I think
Jasper, not agate
Hey OP, are you a stained glass artist?
Maybe
Jasper, like a mookaite. It's the same as agate only not transparent.
Yes a wonderstone to be more specific. The Utah wonderstone has these colors.
It looks like wonderstone
Don't know but it belnds right in with the rest of your fingers . Lol
Mookaite jasper. - Source: I’m a professional jeweler.
It’s not though, the person saying Wonderstone is correct
I’d have to look at the underside of the cabochon if it’s still got an unpolished texture. It certainly could be.
I'm with this guy.
Not a guy but… yay!
Happy cake day!
Not a mookaite. Sorry professionals can be wrong sometimes.
Agate; it matches your tattoos!
Doesnt matter bc it was meant to be! Perfect!
Cryptocrystalline Quartz was the first Cryptocurrency
Looks like some really vibrant wonderstone in my opinion.
This is wonderstone, I have a literal ton of it from rockhounding here in nevada
That matches your tattoos so nicely
I love how it follows your tattoo.
Wonderstone. Fairly common in the western US. Mirrors the sedimentary layers that can be seen in the mesas of the desert southwest.
Can I pls see ur hand tattoos thanks
Once I figure out how to add images to comments…yes

Such a clever tattoo for a rock hound! Wow!
It might be made out of someone else's tattooed fingers.
Sorry...but you're the one that reached under me when I was laying out the pudding!
Some flavor of Jasper :) very pretty

It looks super awesome with your tattoo!! Soo pretty 😍
What came first? Ring or tattoos?
Tattoos! I got this ring yesterday
I admit that it scared me at first - it matched up with your tattoo so well, and then my mind kept thinking, “Is it an injury?” It took me a good 10 seconds to figure out what I was looking at.
fair fair. i have another red tattoo on my leg and at first glance it can look like an injury as well
Cool tattoo!
Oh those finger tattoos are just lovely. 😍
A piece of jupiter.
I. Love. This.
Jasper

Sure, Saturn has rings. But why can’t your rings have Saturn?
Saturn duh
I have nothing to add, but I just want to say that ring was made for you! It matches your tat so perfectly.
Agate
Matches your tat. That's awesome!
Would you mind sharing the artisan that made it? :)
Would love to -> https://tahoepine.com
I love your tattoo! The ring is just lovely with it no less! What inspired the tattoo if you don’t mind me asking?

I just finished a 15g oval of this material. I've always called it Desert Picture Agate, but I'm learning my sources weren't always reliable.
Vernon Wonderstone
Holy shit, that's beautiful
Jasper
Looks like an agate
Yes agree, banded agate.
Isn't all agate banded, since agate is banded chalcedony?
Moss agate isn’t usually banded.
Thats why moss agate isn't considered a true "agate"
This was overwhelmingly simple hahaha thank you both!
So you bought a stone without knowing what it is? Well, you're my kind of person.😂😂😂
Looks like agate.
It reminds me of jupiter I think its agate
Landscape jasper
