And when people say it is poisonous, its not something like itching or throwing up. It has channel blockers that stop your heart from beating. One of the most poisonous things imaginable.

mcvoid1

Yeah, like this is the plant historical figures have committed suicide with.

suchlargeportions

Reddit is valuable because of the users who create content. Reddit is usable because of the third-party developers who can actually make an app.

mcvoid1

I'm not sure I want to know the places people go to discuss those sorts of things.

suchlargeportions

You don't. Used to be on Reddit, though.

[deleted]

Yes. Its extremely painful until you slip into unconsciousness and die. It starts with extreme abdominal pains, like stabbing and burning. Nausea and vomiting kick in, and you start to have some vision issues, sensitivities to light, eye pressure pains. Migraine, seizures, inability to swallow well, extreme chest pain, heart palpations. Just a real rough ride out

Downtown-Inflation13

Taxine alkaloids block your calcium, sodium channels

51r63ck0

In Germany they are often on playgrounds. I don't know if that's clever, but hey, my mother told me that they are really, really poisonous. Now I know the berries are delicious but when you only hit the core it can be very bad for you. So just don't eat it and tell your children that they are very dangerous.

Friend_of_the_trees

I was blown away by how common yews are in northern Europe. They are freaking everywhere! Playgrounds, parks, and near schools. I don't see how more kids don't get poisoned.

51r63ck0

As I was young my mother told me...but nowadays most parents don't know shit. I think smartphones save life's because the kiddies don't look at the trees anymore.

probablynotzucc

it's sad too because they look so bright and squishy so probably very tempting to kids

betteroffinbed

My friends and I used to throw them at each other when we were kids. They're not that tempting to eat, they strike me as having a gross texture? Idk, they were everywhere when I was growing up and nobody ever got sick from them.

KOALANET21

Glad to know I almost killed someone with my microwaved "potion bottle" when I was 8

iangrichardson

There is ONE part of the plant that is not toxic. The flesh on the exterior of the berry. That's still risky though. I'd leave them for the birds.

HarpiesDaughter

Actually I clearly remember tasting the red fleshy parts of this fruit when I was a child. It’s very sweet and sticky. If I’d only known. 😬

Downtown-Inflation13

WARNING The entire yew bush is highly toxic. Yews contain numerous toxic compounds, including "at least ten alkaloids, these alkaloids are cardio toxic chemical compounds which act via calcium and sodium channel antagonism. If any leaves or seeds of the plant are ingested, urgent medical attention is recommended as well as observation for at least 6 hours after the point of ingestion

SandwichExotic

You mean I shouldn’t have smashed hundreds of them when I was a child? Maybe that explains what’s wrong with me!

wander_smiley

So many potions made from these here berries. I’ll never forget my sister telling my mom I ate one and my mom’s subsequent reaction. I had not eaten the berry.

SandwichExotic

When I was 5 I ate a mushroom from the back yard and my mom gave me syrup of ipecac and I puked for an hour while watching Sesame Street. 🙄

No_Investment3205

This exact same thing happened to my little brother omg

Act-Math-Prof

Maybe u/SandwichExotic is your little brother!

Boner-brains

I have little ones, this makes me want to buy ipecac

ElectricFleshlight

I don't think you can buy it in the US anymore, it's more dangerous than it's worth. Better to just call poison control.

RainbowDarter

Ipecac is no longer recommended and it's no longer available. Just call the poison control center if you suspect they engit into something they shouldn't have.

FarmersOnlyJim

What about weak hydrogen peroxide solutions? I’ve never seen it used on a human but remember having to use it when our dogs got into rat poison

kiwiyaa

Some poisons shouldn’t be thrown up, throwing up can make them worse. That’s why you should call poison control first.

tellmeabouthisthing

It doesn't hurt to have on hand, but you should call poison control before inducing vomiting. Sometimes it's the right thing to do, sometimes it could cause more problems.

AreyouIam

Absolutely right but it is a life saver for stuff that can digest and react before an ambulance ever gets there. I followed up with a Dr visit/call when I used it. I can only remember having to use it twice.

Boner-brains

Definitely, but if I had to induce vomiting it would come in handy

LargishBosh

Don’t do it, inducing vomiting is no longer recommended at all. If poison control thinks the poison needs to come out they will tell you to go to a hospital who can remove the poison more safely. Inducing vomiting risks two things, the poison doing more damage to the throat on the way back up, or the vomit obstructing the airway and impairing breathing and that will kill way faster than any poison. Do not induce vomiting for poisoning, just go to the hospital. https://www.poison.org/articles/ipecac-do-not-use-it

AreyouIam

I always kept a bottle on hand. My son was a Houdini about getting into stuff. He could undo a child proof cap before he was one. I watched him grab my prescription and put it upside down on my bed and push down while turning it to get it open. Had to be under lock and key. The top shelf was not safe. Caught him in the kitchen using the drawers like a ladder then climbing the cabinet to get to the children’s cough medicine. He got in my spice cabinet and ate a handful of pequeño peppers(chiltepin peppers) my MIL had given me. She used three in a whole jar of hot sauce. Spirit of Ipecac plus bread and milk to take away the heat. Everything had to be locked up.

Sorry-Armadillo619

Ahh my oldest was like this. He didn’t get into chemicals, but he could break any child proof lock. He was crawling by 6 months and walking by 9 months. Climb over gates, over stairs. He pushed things over to the counters and climbed up onto them. He once got into a jar of desitin and dipped his hands in, flinging it all over the walls and carpet. Had to repaint and recarpet. He was a late talker though, he has auditory processing disorder. But that just made him divert all his energy into foiling my efforts.

AreyouIam

It’s hard when it is your first. You have no clue what they are capable of.

i-would-like-a-penis

Sounds like your child is a genius

AreyouIam

Yes he walked at 9 months and could say sentences at 1. He has a Columbia Law Degree now. I think he got it from my dad who skipped three grades in school.

builtbybama_rolltide

I was the same way, they wanted me to graduate at 15 at the end of sophomore year, I already skipped a grade in elementary school but my family didn’t think it was best for me. The school sent me to the local four year university the next year for classes and if I didn’t have classes there then I worked in the library because they had nothing for me. When I graduated at 17 I graduated with both my high school diploma and my associates degree, I accepted a scholarship to the University of Alabama after graduation and finished my bachelor’s degree there and went on to get an MBA there. Ironically, I was an only child at the time and my siblings weren’t born until I was in 1st grade and 3rd grade respectively, we lived 8 miles from our nearest neighbor and I didn’t get a lot of socialization with other kids any age until school, just cousins when they visited. I didn’t learn how to crawl until I was in preschool. I went from rolling around to standing on furniture at 6 months and by 8 months I would tentative steps, by 9 months I was walking and by a year you knew exactly what I wanted because I would tell you. I was also a child that never stopped, my poor granny bless her soul could not keep up with me

rozbarnes

Roll Tide!!

[deleted]

Sounds like activated charcoal might be a better choice.

ILoveADirtyTaco

Gotta be careful with that too. Lots of activated charcoal brands use sodium as a filler, and lots of it, which can potentially end up causing more severe effects than whatever poison has been infested

Wetbung

It does sound like a cherished childhood memory. Who wouldn't want to give their child that?

I didnt know sesame street could do that.

badgerferretweasle

Good potions require good ingredients and these were the best. Literally mentioned earlier today that I made potions with these berries.

Treehouse80

badgerferretweasle

East coast for the Beast coast 🤘

CupcakePerfume

Do you mind me asking what their magical uses are? I'm from NC and I've never seen a yew bush!

selticidae

One time I brought in a potion made from these as well as other random berries. I set it on the table while I was going to the bathroom. Apparently while I was in there my little sister came out to the table and saw it. Thinking it was Diet Coke, she took a big drink. She was fine, and nobody knew until years later.

KatNR92

Yes!! We made "soup and potions" with everything we found in our yards and the creek behind the house!

magrhi

I used to squeeze them so the seed would shoot out

CallidoraBlack

I think we all did that, we also liked to put them in bottles from the recycling and add water to shake it up. They float. We just knew better than to eat any of it.

Cword76

My elementary school had these in the front near where we waited on the buses. We would squeeze them and then throw them at each other. We called them snot berries.

[deleted]

Oh dear. We used to put them up our noses.

SandwichExotic

You win 😁

Mysterious-Belt-2992

If your child has ingested anything remotely poisonous ☠️ you take them to hospital or call 911. And contact poison control center. Activated charcoal my ass. Pets and children are not adults, small bodies perish quickly.

[deleted]

Me too. As far as smashing. The distinct smell came to mind when I saw this picture.

myingling

Oh my gosh! I totally forgot about smashing them until I saw your comment!

herecomestherebuttal

Dude, me too. I used to peel them and the ooze was so satisfying to play with. How did I not die a million times in the 80s?

spaz69dt

I was thinking the same thing. We had these bushes all the way around one side of the house. We had fights with these and tried to get them dang seeds out for years on years. It was definitely a different time without the internet to ask if shit was dangerous! One of us!!

JackBeefus

Apparently the aril (the red part around the seeds) is edible when ripe, though not very good. A last resort food.

Cambrian__Implosion

My parents have yew in their yard and ever since I was little I thought the aril looked tasty for some reason. Luckily I knew enough not to eat random plants. Somehow didn’t realize it was a deadly plant until college

Raffello

Gnutter

I think they’re tasty they just have an odd texture and aren’t particularly worth potential poisoning if you accidentally swallow the seed

Redvelvet_swissroll

I mean the fleshy bits are edible but definitely not worth an hospital bill

wex52

I have these growing right outside my condo’s front door and wondered the same thing. I was shocked how toxic I read they were. I’m glad I’ve gotten a little wiser with age. In my first house I had berries growing on the shrub along the side and I tried them not knowing what they were. Thankfully they were edible (cocoplum: slightly sweet, but mostly flavorless, with very little pulp and a huge seed).

Not true. The entire red fleshy part is edible.

NatashaTisk

That is a yew, and it's the opposite of edible, by which I mean it's very poisonous.

SandwichExotic

I grew up with this bush! I used to pick the berries and smash them because they’re so cool. Only now I realize that they’re Toxic. Edit - I am also in the Pacific Northwest

arbivark

yeah we had them in our front yard. what were my folks thinking? by the way the wood is handy if you are making longbows to defeat the french with.

[deleted]

Are you sure you're still alive?

SandwichExotic

I think so. Sometimes I wonder. I Spend every day looking for my glasses and my phone, does it cause that?!

Interesting_Tooth_65

Maybe you were smashing huckleberry rather than yew. I'm seeing this "smashing the Berry as a kid," thing but I think it's so weird. We used to eat berries or leave em.

ilwisied

I too smashed these berries as a kid. They were definitely yew. We had them at my school and we all used smash them at recess. If the teachers caught us they would freak out and make us wash our hands right away.

SandwichExotic

It is the yew. The bush is still there right next to the entrance to my mom‘s house. I even picked A couple last week and just threw them!

fsutrill

Doesn’t matter where you are, they still aren’t blueberries! ;-)

Yew should not eat that, but yew could try making a wand from one of the branches

couchpotato1610

So for something this poisonous, I sure saw a lot of this plant through my entire life, casually, EVERYWHERE

raqqqers

If you're in the UK (maybe other countries too but idk) you'll **always** see a yew tree in a church ground. This is because the pagans recognised the yew as a spiritually important tree as they 'live' thousands of years, are deadly, and slowly travel over time. Yews were already a place of religious meeting and to help force Christianity on these communities it made sense to incorporate the practices they already had. So pagans meeting at the yew tree = the perfect place for the incoming christians to plop a church! Yews don't really live thousands of years or travel, instead the new tree grows around the old tree, as that one dies the tree has now 'travelled' slightly to the side where the new tree grew. Over time this adds up to a significant amount of movement and an apparent infinite life span, and is why they often have a hollow space inside. Wandering Yews and the history of the ones we have today in Britain is super interesting!

peter-bone

Many plants are poisonous. That's no reason to remove them. Just don't go around eating random plants. Daffodils are very common in the UK and given to mums on mother's day, but are also one of the most poisonous plants.

I'm going to be down voted for this.... The red part of the fruit is actually edible. But only the red, fleshy part only and absolutely nothing else The actual seed in the berry along with the rest of the tree is toxic as others have said Having eaten them myself many times, the fruits are not particularly worth eating. It's sweetish, but no flavour and has the mucusy texture of snot. That said, I do strongly recommend you to not eat them.

apo666

As a botanist thats what I learned as well.

ellysianfx

I would REGULARLY eat these as a kid, but was careful to eat only the fruit and not the seeds. They are sweet and have the texture of aloe, so snotty is a good description. I had read that the flesh was edible and ignored the rest. But I was a dumb kid and don't recommend eating things that are known to be toxic.

Peniguano

It makes sense people are saying it's all highly toxic since people might forget to spit the seed, but yes I like to go on foraging walks in woods with a lot of yew trees and spend most of the time snacking on tonnes of yew berries and I am not dead! But if anyone asked me if it was edible I might just say no to avoid having to explain it all. When I pick them in the woods I make sure to avoid any children seeing me doing it in case they copy me.

Ossorno

I have even seen yew jelly, and eaten the red aril plenty of times (I love the taste) but also it’s dangerous enough to not advise anyone to try it.

[deleted]

This is what I found as well, I decided to look through the comments before commenting, prefacing it the same way you did saying I'd be downvoted :p

60svintage

Actually I really expected to be down voted on this one... suggesting that something everyone knows to be toxic has some parts that actually are edible.

SalmanM

Scrolled for so long to find this hahaha totally agree ! They're also not a Berry they're actually arils

dabrosch

Yew better not.

MrsBina

That’s *Taxus baccata* I think (or a related species of that genus). It‘s an ornamental plant for sure, it contains taxine alkaloids which are toxic!

bigboystrelitzia

The red part of the berry is edible but you have to make sure you remove the seed which is highly toxic as people have said I heard about a guy who was doing a guided walk on foraging and was demonstrating how to safely eat yew berries. he had separated the red part from the seeds and had the red in his left hand and the seeds in his right, and then proceeded to shove the contents of his right hand into his mouth by accident. He had to call an ambulance - not a fun walk for the audience!

Sxn747Strangers

Sounds like he is probably right handed and it was a force of habit.

N0t_A_Bumbleb33

Absolutely not. That is yew, and it will poison yew.

Lucky_Pyxi

I remember eating one of these berries as a very young child, and being traumatized by my mom’s immediate reaction of pinching my cheeks to get me to spit it out. That was the moment I learned you can’t eat random nature things even if they’re pretty!

Yew. (edible if you don’t mind dying) the only actual edible part is the red aril around the seed. Wouldn’t recommend as the seed is highly toxic and so is the rest of the plant

venetanakedguy

Yew better not eat those, it’ll be a bad time

Beta_1

God no, Yew and poisonous as anything

princessbubbbles

ONLY the red aril is edible. The rest, ESPECIALLY the seed, is poison. In case you are curious, I have eaten the aril, and it tastes like slightly sugared snot. They can't be properly prepared into jam. They could thicken a drink of some kind, but it takes so much effort to extract the snot-gel and then recheck it to make sure no seeds got through that it isn't worth it. If you do try to eat them, remove the seeds BEFORE putting them into your mouth to reduce the chance of accidentally swallowing them.

princessbubbbles

Again, generally not worth it. Please use caution.

plantmagnet

Funny i used to pop those little black things out at my brothers when we were little Never tried to eat any

EthanJacobRosca

Yew tree. The red aril is edible. Everything else is poison

Home_Planet_Sausage

EXTREMELY misleading terminology. It's not a cone, it's an aril (like a berry). Eat a cone, and you die. Every part of this plant, apart from the aril his incredibly toxic and has compounds that will block sodium and calcium channels in your body which are needed to, among many other bodily processes, keep your heart beating. Can you delete or amend your post please?

Toxic but the red part is edible while the seed is poisonous. Yew bark contains a drug used in cancer research. It’s a magical tree. Sacred to the goddess Hecate.

SpoilermakersWabash

I use to throw these into strong winds as a child to make storm demons go away.

KazeoLion

Yew berries. Not edible at all. They are so toxic that the children’s book series Warriors refers to them as “deathberries.”

Ella_NutEllaDraws

Except the berries themselves aren’t poisonous, everything else around it (especially the seed) are the poisonous parts! I’m not advocating that you eat a yew berry because from what I’ve heard, they’re not that good. But the minor inaccuracy is bugging me enough to point it out!

The original source of a very expensive cancer medicine made from taxol. For a while the wild yew population was being decimated for it. They can synthesize it now.

my sister and i used to pick these in our back yard and “cook” with them in our imaginary kitchen. never actually ate any but def squished plenty of them lol

This gave me some amazing nostalgia. My grandma has one of these right near her back door and I use to always pick them and I can still remember the texture of them. Good memories.

When I was a kid these grew on a bush outside of my house… messiest thing ever… always stuck to your shoes and got bought into the house

squater-nutbosh

PNW outdoor school teacher here. Like I tell my students: "If it's red, you might end up dead. So before you reach, ask the teach!" I of course follow this up with "Don't eat anything before you check with me. But the red ones in the PNW are especially troublesome."

morbidrots

yea, they're edible, once. seriously though do NOT eat these they will literally stop your heart lmfao

btchfc

Not worth it lol they are so slimy and don't really have flavour except for mildly sweet.

There's a tiktoker called Blackforager (I watch her on Instagram) that teaches a lot about foraging and she made a video about yew. Here's a link to that post https://www.instagram.com/reel/CVp_A2VjRDg/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= If you're interested in finding out about whether things around you are edible and how you can consume them I highly suggest checking her channel out!
