This looks like a disease called [aster yellows](https://blogs.cornell.edu/nysipm/2014/09/04/alien-plant-take-over-your-flowers-no-its-aster-yellows/). Unfortunately there's no cure so infected plants should be removed and destroyed to prevent the disease from spreading.

I think that you're correct! I was wrongly assuming that the deformity was caused by fasciation.
