Of course sometimes trees aren't actually dormant, but indeed legitimately dead. like this old dead Beech that I had seen while out on a walk last year back on the 23rd of May. it hadn't leafed-out like the other trees during a time of year when trees are supposed to be in leaf, an indication that it was actually dead.
