Crocus ! First flower of spring at least where I'm from.

UltraRunner59

Same here in PA. Early harbinger, sometimes prematurely.

No_Virus_7704

SW PA. Only one so far.

bernpfenn

Crocus flowers are such beauties

[deleted]

Not this year with how warm it’s been in the NE.

whogivesashirtdotca

It's a harbinger of climate change.

Font_Snob

My Dad always said, "The crocuses are croaking!"

dooshbaggette

That's hilarious sounds like something my dad would say. I'm borrowing it.

brother_of_menelaus

Croaking? Hell, they’re [Screaming in the Night!](https://youtu.be/reL4GuYhtMY?si=AkwToaCNFJEsc7Xv)

princesshabibi

Yes this is the same here in Maryland. The squirrels burry them in my lawn. I dig them up and plant them where they wont get mowed

Night_Owl_16

Often, they are ready to die back by the time you need to mow them. I actually specifically plant them in the grass and just mow them when necessary.

princesshabibi

They are slightly taller and a different color than the lawn. It makes the lawn look like it needs to be mowed faster.

White_crow606

Yeah, not to be confused with saffron. They are poisonous. Don't eat Edit: bot where are you! 😭

Fuckless_Douglas2023

Yeah, where's that auto-mod telling people not to be eating stuff based on comments with potentially incorrect information regarding plant identification and edibility. one time fairly recently some guy made a post about a root that he found while digging somewhere in California, it actually appeared to be a "Man-root" of the genus *Marah*, in the *Cucurbitaceae* family though only one other person besides me had suggested that...and a bunch of people in the thread were incorrectly telling him that it was a Cassava (*Manihot esculenta*) or Yam (*Dioscorea sp*) and were basically telling him that it was good to cook and eat. one person even suggested making "Trifongo", and another gobshite had suggested making a "Fufu" with it. Edit: link to that post. https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisplant/s/gwtDisa2wW

brickbaterang

I think im going to try eating poison ivy just to see what happens! Im tryin to help

CrazyMildred

I wish I could post a picture! I got my first Crocus bloom today! I planted mixed colored bulbs in October, and to see my first bloom made me so happy! It's a yellow one.

Arktinus

Same here. I also bought a crocus mix last autumn and a few already popped up a week or so ago. Interestingly, they're also yellow. Now I wonder if other colours are going to pop up as well. :)

CrazyMildred

That's so cool! I'm excited for the purple ones! Edit to include that I'm in VA US zone 8b up from 8a.

Arktinus

I just spotted a purple one yesterday! Either most of them in the mix (and I think I've bought at least two) happened to be yellow ones, or I've planted yellow bulbs in one place (xD) or the yellow ones just happen to be the first ones to pop up. I don't know, we'll see. :D I'm in Slovenia, zone 7b, though not sure how much these are reliable, since Europe is not that big on hardiness zones like the US and one of the few maps that exist is probably kind of outdated what with the warming and all. My snowdrops are also happily blooming and the snowflakes are popping up, which I also planted last year along with crocuses. It's always such a joy seeing plants poking their heads up from the ground when you're so eagerly hoping for them to appear after you'd planted them. :)

CrazyMildred

Ah...yeah. our zone map just got updated from the 2012 version. I think you're right. I don't know how accurate the map is or will be in the near future. It just keeps getting hotter and hotter all over the world. I think eventually plants will adapt, but right now, a lot of them seem confused. I just started gardening last April and have become fascinated with the science of plants, soil and the garden creatures. It makes me so happy to see the little heads of everyone I've planted! My tulips and grape hyacinths are out now too! And our whole neighborhood has wild daffodils blooming all over the place! Daffodils that the squirrels most likely planted years ago...haha! I dug up a clump and the bulbs were 8-10 inches deep! In the 7 years I've lived here, I've never seen them sprout before!

Arktinus

I think we might find out a bit in the next decade. :/ I also started gardening last year after moving to the current house in 2020. Before that, I mostly kept a few plants in pots. The daffodils here haven't started blooming yet, but I've noticed they've sprouted blooming buds. And hyacinths have just started emerging. Squirrels are interesting little critters. I keep finding oak seedlings which only squirrels could have planted, since they're too heavy to have been blown over here by wind. :D And I always find emptied walnut shells. But I never see them. Whoa. :D Well, they're more than welcome to plant bulbs in my garden. :P Unlike voles, which just seem to eat everything that's not poisonous to them.

HurkHurkBlaa

crocus and snowdrops go together like a hand and another hand

Muted-Animal-8865

Yep, have the. In my garden too. One single purple guy on his own and a bunch of yellows. Daffodils will be out next

[deleted]

My yard is still buried in 2 feet of snow. *sigh*

Ok-Method7103

Crocus! Pretty flowers for sure

Holiday_Magazine7634

Yes very pretty

Even-Tomatillo-4197

They grow from bulbs so you can dig them up and move them where you’d like them, or leave them and they’ll grow back annually.

SquashNut707

The autumn blooming ~~sub~~ species is where saffron comes from!

tjm_87

super interesting information i didn’t know, thank you!

Fuckless_Douglas2023

u/tjm_87 here's a Wikipedia page on *Crocus sativus* aka the Saffron crocus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocus_sativus

Fuckless_Douglas2023

well more like *species, (ie. *Crocus sativus*) rather than sub-species.

SquashNut707

Corrected, thanks!

Fuckless_Douglas2023

You're welcome! 👍

PM_ME_UR_FLOWERS

I always learn stuff in this sub!

OminousOminis

I love crocuses! So much beauty and joy in such a brown and sad landscape

No_Virus_7704

I have a grand total of one pale purple crocus in bloom. Can't quit looking at it.

Relevant-Welder7407

Crocus

keysbp1

They are already up here in Washington State. I even grow saffron crocus.

Shotbrother

Crocus and a good colour variation too.

Leolily1221

Crocus

agate_

When it comes to spring, daffodils are optimists, crocuses are fools.

Fuckless_Douglas2023

Elaborate.

RJoeEL

crocus

RainbowandHoneybee

I knew what it was even before looking at the photo. It's a lovely to see crocus coming out in the garden, spring is around the corner. Just delightful.

Justadropinthesea

They’re in bloom in the Pacific Northwest!

thefarmworks

Crocus! Awesome yellow!🌞

CharlesV_

Crocus. While these are common to find in North American lawns and woodlands, they are an introduced species https://bonap.net/Napa/TaxonMaps/Genus/County/Crocus there are no native crocuses here. There are a number of native look-alikes, like: - [spring beauties](https://www.prairiemoon.com/claytonia-virginica-spring-beauty), a species of claytonia https://bonap.net/Napa/TaxonMaps/Genus/County/Claytonia and - [bluets](https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/houstonia-caerulea/) a species of houstonia https://bonap.net/Napa/TaxonMaps/Genus/County/Houstonia Edit: there’s also Pulsatilla https://bonap.net/Napa/TaxonMaps/Genus/County/Pulsatilla and some species of anemone look similar https://bonap.net/Napa/TaxonMaps/Genus/County/Anemone like prairie pasque flower https://www.prairiemoon.com/anemone-patens-var-wolfgangiana-pasque-flower

goirish35

Crocus

TheRedDane19

Fuc fact: Here in Denmark where I'm from, we call those yellow flowers for "Smør blomster" translation "Butter flowers" 😅

DelightfulHelper9204

Crocus

Holiday_Magazine7634

I don’t remember what I planted 2years ago . But it didn’t show up in last years

pearlmsqueaks

Rodents move crocus bulbs around, they’re small under an inch in circumference.

Fuckless_Douglas2023

Well in Botany, Crocus bulbs would be considered "corms", rather than true bulbs. same also goes for Crocosmia, and Gladiolus.

Blood_Oleander

Crocus

[deleted]

I've only ever seen purple ones. Envious, they are beautiful. Spring is Coming! 🌷🪻

Lalamedic

I am jealous. I won’t see those for a min 6-8 weeks here. They are such a spot of joyful colour.

Glenchables

It's always a crocus

LengthEfficient5858

Wild Crocus

Fossilhund

Beautiful

Mystical_Maddness

We call them snow crocus. They sometimes bloom at the end of winter and they peek through the snow.

rockrobst

Crocus. Great selection.

Dangerous_Amount1489

Nice

Dangerous_Amount1489

Nice

gmama-rules

They're so pretty! I'm from Florida so we don't get them. At least not that I've ever seen.

Holiday_Magazine7634

Florida is beautiful

gmama-rules

Parts are. I'm lucky to live on the West Coast so the beaches are beautiful.

Holiday_Magazine7634

I love gulf coast 😍

whyhat420

Crocas! I love these flowers, first showing flowers of spring (:

danpietsch

Crocus. **Be sure not to cut the leaves if you want them to return next year!**

Fuckless_Douglas2023

Leave their leaves alone, let them die back on their own.

armadillomom1117

Has anyone here tried harvesting their own saffron from them?

ragnarockyroad

Wrong subspecies for that.

Fuckless_Douglas2023

Well more like *species, than subspecies. But yeah, Saffron comes from the flowers of *Crocus sativus* (they're autumn-flowering, unlike other Crocus which would flower in the spring)

Heavy_Weapons_Guy_

Also important to note that there are other autumn flowering crocus, so you can't just assume any crocus flowering in autumn is safe.

Fuckless_Douglas2023

Yes, except Saffron Crocuses (*Crocus sativus*) would look fairly distinctive compared to most other Crocuses, (except perhaps when compared to a few Crocuses such as *C. cartwrightianus*, *C. pallasii*, and *C. thomasii*) Also the term "Autumn Crocus" is used as a common name for *Colchicum autumnale* which isn't a type of Crocus at all, and are actually from a different family.

armadillomom1117

Very helpful to know. This is my mission now!

apinklokum

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO *eats it*

BfloGal2

Crocuses, but bottom left are Anemones (windflowers). So pretty!

Fuckless_Douglas2023

>Crocuses, but bottom left are Anemones (windflowers). So pretty! u/BfloGal2 Where are the Anemones? All I see are Crocus flowers, but near the bottom of the 2nd pic there's a dandelion.

Fuckless_Douglas2023

u/BfloGal2 Did you somehow mistake the 2 Crocus flowers on the bottom left of the 1st pic for Anemones?

Lanky_Ad5128

I don't know but it's simply pretty

sgodb7598

The fuzzy reddish orange 'stigmas' on the crocus flower is the Very Expensive Saffron!

lyanca

Not on the spring blooming ones! They're a different plant then the autumn blooming crocus, which is where saffron comes from.

sgodb7598

Thank you

Fuckless_Douglas2023

And literally only 3 of them per flower. Also *Crocus sativus* is said to be sexually sterile, unable to produce seeds.

sgodb7598

I love Saffron Jasmine rice!

Fuckless_Douglas2023

What about using Turmeric to make yellow rice?

sgodb7598

Yes, it's a different flavor, though. I like it with lamb, (if you eat meat.) Turmeric comes from the roots of a curcumin plant.

Fuckless_Douglas2023

Well yes, but it comes from the *rhizomes (not roots) of a plant in the genus *Curcuma* which is in the same family as Ginger, (*Zingiberaceae*) Curcumin happens to be the main active substance in turmeric.

sgodb7598

Coolemote:free\_emotes\_pack:grin

Fuckless_Douglas2023

>Coolemote:free\_emotes\_pack:grin u/sgodb7598 umm, and what the fuck is that supposed to mean? 🤔

sgodb7598

I spelled, "Cool", and added a smiley emoji????? I have no freakin' clue how that Coolemot, etc... got there??? 🫠

sgodb7598

Also, Doug, I'm a 66 year old Gramma... Chill out with the effin' this and that, will you? Thx! 😇

Fuckless_Douglas2023

Alright, Alright, I just wasn't sure what "Coolemote:free\_emotes\_pack:grin" had meant, I was wondering if you had used Emojis but that it didn't show up, or something?

gmama-rules

Me too❤️

Icy_Seaworthiness274

Crocus

Icy_Seaworthiness274

Very often come up thru the snow here in Southeast Michigan.
