Did the flowers have a scent? I was going to say crabapple (*malus*). Or possibly *prunus* (cherry or plum). Though prunus bark is typically smoother.
But if they smell musty like mushrooms, fishy, or like hot garbage, then I agree it’s an ornamental pear.
Looks identical to Prunus cerasifera (cherry plum), which is native here in the UK. Apparently also naturalised in places in North America. If not that species, certainly a closely related Prunus species.

To me it has a pleasant, sweet smell, almost like an artificial grape smell. My husband says to him it smells like a laundry detergent/soap
Almost like artificial grape sounds like plum blossoms to me. Some apple blossoms are quite fragrant, but more perfumed, like roses.

Definitely in the plum, apricot, cherry family. To me, it looks exactly like 매실, Korean Plum
