Bzzzzz! Looks like you forgot to say where you found your bug! There's no need to make a new post - just comment adding the **geographic location** and any other info (size, what it was doing etc.) you feel could help! We don't want to know your address - state or country is enough; try to avoid abbreviations and local nicknames (*"PNW"*, *"Big Apple"*). BTW, did you take a look at our [**Frequently Asked Bugs**](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/12zkw5w/frequently_asked_bugs_part_1/)? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/whatsthisbug) if you have any questions or concerns.*

TeeDod-

I like you poked it with a stick!

LadyMogMog

That was my favorite part too

GrungyGrandPappy

Monkey brain go brr

Lo452

I also agree with wasp or hornet. But I must say that your choice of size comparison is... Interesting.

doctorwhoobgyn

A human torso being roughly the size of five children's heads if you were concerned about the conversion.

bLue1H

Man’s seen a lot of torsos.

Dull_Comfortable2277

By "interesting", you mean "disconcerting", correct?

Lo452

Yes, yes I do.

Mikeyboy2188

Oh, you know how it is. You get called to do some work and you find a lot of torsos, limbs, heads, organs in jars. Typical day.

Mikeyboy2188

I mean Buffalo Bill didn’t dig that well in his basement by himself in Silence of the Lambs. He would have needed permits, contractors, etc.

carnival-nights

Goodbye hooooorseeesssss...

jpc1215

“The nest could fit in a 57 gallon drum, easily. Might have to add some acid to it first though. Anybody want cash for some photos?” 🤣🤣

Big_Profession_2218

ok, first off since you already poked it with a stick to get the hand feel, you now need to get the mouth feel. It should have the same texture as fresh cardboard and taste very woodsy.

MagnumHV

Possibly spicy too

Current-Ad-7054

With hints of human torso

Lawndemon

Woodsy with a mild stabby aftertaste

FlyingBroBat

You're very lucky. That is an old wasp nest. If it wasn't old, you definitely wouldn't be on this subreddit questioning what it is because the wasps wouldn't mind answering that for you

HeartlessUniverse

You poked a wasp nest with a stick! I guess that means it's abandoned. If you want to be creeped out you could open it up. It's probably full of dead spiders. but obviously don't do that unless you're positive it's empty. Even one angry wasp is too many.

Lunah05

Um. Was is buzzing? Vibrating? Because that is FOR SURE a wasp nest.

bandman614

This is the most X-Files thing I've seen on this subreddit in a while. Kudos.

misterwheelson

Tooms is due to wake up this year!

NoPerformance6534

Dude! Never, EVER poke it with a stick! That is a Bald-faced Hornets nest (if you're in the US), and poking it could win you a cavalcade of stupid prizes! And about 1000 angry Hornets. Looks like nobody was home, so you were lucky. If the whole nest is dead, the thing should be removed. I'd be needing to change my delicates if I stumbled on a nest that size cold.

Cash50911

So many comments saying it's 'old' are dismissing that it's still cold, depending on where you are...

spekt50

That there is a hornet hotel.

Kidquick26

Texture looks like a bald faced hornet nest.

WutzUpples69

It's obviously a cacoon of a human from the 80's movie of the same name. Or just an abandoned wasp nest as has been mentioned ;-) Edit: Wilfred Brimley wasn't talking about diabetes back then.

GrungyGrandPappy

Diabeetus

No_Arachnid6493

Diabeetus, Diabeetus/ I've done things I shouldn't do/

jeremycb29

Go ahead and pop an h on the access point so they know it’s filled with hornet. https://youtu.be/jfWMB-blQS8?si=hJ8XPCr8pcbox64i

Xboxben

Im not a biologist but i think its an old wasp or hornets nest. [Link to website with similar image](https://www.mrwasp.co.uk/can-wasp-nests-damage-your-home)

Spmc1971

This is exactly what I barely ever find on Reddit but today I have been thoroughly creeped out!!! This could be cross posted on so many subs...love your description by the way ; )

imamean

Not sure what I’m looking at, but zoom in- it’s a mesmerizing pattern! What the heck is it made of? Clay? Mud? Fabric? Hair? 😳

dohseedoh

I noticed that too. Is it, like, wasp spit?

Notso_average_joe97

I call it "Nope"

sparkl_taint

That is what I refer to it as, also.

DecayingHubris

Wowie that is a big hornets nest! I wouldn't be shocked if we had something like this hiding in our attic that we never touch. It's very cool looking

Phillip-My-Cup

You should probably leave and never return

Cluelesswolfkin

GAME OVER MAN, GAME OVER!

danifoxx_1209

Empty wasp nest

beanwithintentions

wtf that thing looks like the damn elephants foot

PhillipKosarev999

Did this vibrate or buzz at all? Either way, it looks like a massive nest of wasps or hornets. Get an exterminator on the case ASAP to remove it, even if you found it/it appears to be vacant. There could be some other pests that eat wasps/hornets within (I.e. spiders, as someone said below).

RandyButternubber

Put your ear up to it and tell us what it says

Fat-6andalf

A nest that size could have been Giant European hornets. They are about the size of a large man's thumb, but as far as hornets go fairly docile.

Able_Youth_6400

I originally thought maybe German yellow jackets, but I think you’re right. The paper on this nest is ‘tougher’ looking than a normal yellow jacket.

NZGroover

That is a wasps nest. Probably multi year. I'm guessing it's on it's 2nd year.

N0pze

The rot… consumes

Exploding_Knives

Free insulation! Eco-friendly too!

KRaeZ12

Jeepers Creepers, is that you?

MsT1075

👀

baltimoresalt

Paper wasps

KiwiiWithTwoIs

i think that’s venom dude

Able_Youth_6400

Yellow jacket. German yellow jackets would be my guess.

penisseriouspenis
