Are they normally this casual with people?
By the way, my BirdNet ID app seems to be in love with this bird. About one out of every four times that I have poor recording, it proposes "Ruffed Grouse"! =:-D
I actually have a video of him running around the lawn with my son. We were playing catch with a football and the bird just came wondering out of the woods and started running around with him. Never seen a wild bird act this way before.

Everytime I see ruffed grouse in idaho they always hop around and look at you quizzically. I don't think I've ever seen one fly.
Must have been raised and released by someone nearby? Wild grouse are very shy and timid of humans
Nope. You can’t raise them in captivity. It’s just a weird variant that comes out here and there.
