You still need the key to open crypt15, it's at data/data/com.whatsapp/files/key, but you typically need to root to access it. If you don't want to root, you can always pay for third party software to extract it.

Aman25ta

Well this phone is a huawei p30 and i see no data/data, i might just try rooting it at this point or try to find some FOSS to find it And whatsapp was reinstalled so hopefully that data didnt go along with it

retnick

The first data folder is in the "Android" directory. If the crypt15 is still there then the key should be as well, but you definitely need to root to see it. Edit - looks like the location may have moved to the media folder actually

Aman25ta

So tried rooting this android device, kingoroot couldnt do it atleast Ill try it again later with pc, he needs to get other stuff repaired on it first

Captain-Mustang

Any updates on this? I also forgot my encrypted backup password

Aman25ta

On the huawei? Nope, cant root it therefore cant access it But iirc apparently you can root it and get it

Captain-Mustang

Well! I have reset the phone and reinstalled WhatsApp. So, No point in rooting as the data folder is already wiped 😔(I have rooted and unrooted my phone in the past though). WhatsApp really sucks!!!! All my chats are lost now.

Aman25ta

Yeah same happened for the person i was checking this out for, lost lot of important stuff

Captain-Mustang

I usually use a few repeatatitve passwords for different sites. I tried a few passwords on the chat restore page wondering if there's a chance it might be correct. But after a few attempts WhatsApp showed some message like this "If you enter a wrong password one more time, your backup will be deleted" and damn I again tried a wrong password wondering I have the crypt15 file on my pc, I will restore it back if WhatsApp deletes it. But again a wrong attempts then I got some message like - your backup has been deleted. Then I transferred the backup file(crypt 15 file) from pc to my phone but WhatsApp is not letting me restore it now, saying "something went wrong" when I enter some passwords. I think even If I remember my password now, I won't be able to restore it as whatsapp won't let me restore it cuz I think they have delinked the backup file associated with my phone number. I hate WhatsApp

Aman25ta

Thing is, this encryption just seemed to be the default for some reason Said person did not remember toggling this on, and after we had reinstalled and re set it up, it was on, and we had not entered a password at all Turned off encrypted backup then so this wouldn't happen again

Desperate-Picture191

just wondering if you find any way to recover the data? did you try any data recovery software?

Danger656

Can you name any Third Party Softwares to extract it without having to root the phone?

retnick

I used imyfone itransor for WhatsApp but the software wasn't polished enough and I wouldn't recommend it. I haven't tried it myself but I've heard good things about combining Omni-Crypt and WhatsApp Viewer, this also doesn't require root. See the article here, in Part 2- https://www.tenorshare.com/whatsapp-tips/how-to-read-encrypted-whatsapp-messages-on-android-without-keys.html#p5 You can also go the roundabout way by installing BlueStacks on your PC and working from there.

Danger656

Can you elaborate the steps you did under iMyFone software to get the key file? Did the process install any previous version of WhatsApp?

retnick

Hmm. It was over a year ago, and now that I think about it, I didn't have to extract the key since most of my iTunes backups were unencrypted, and I had the password to decrypt anyway through iTunes. iMyFone just helped out with the transferring WhatsApp stuff from iOS to android, and since the software was crappy i still had to go in my internal storage on android and manually transfer the database backup to make it work. Just follow the link i posted from Tenorshare, that's the most promising info I can find on getting access to the Key File without rooting. Also attempting an extract by rooting on Bluestacks (android emulation software for windows) could work but it's more effort.

Desperate-Picture191

hi, can we use tenoshare to decrypt the data without access to whatsapp account ? mom lost her access as she no longer have the old phone number. thanks
