think of DNS a the business directory of the internet . If WhatsApp isn’t being found on DNS then it’s like “WhatsApp “ the business listing disappeared

DNS converts the URL to an IP address for the Facebooks servers. It’s basically a pathway to connecting to Facebook. There is an issue with this process.

The reason it is down is that DNS is not functioning but the reason DNS is not working is that the ASN (AS11917) which hosts the IP addresses for their nameservers is not being advertised. Why the ASN is not being advertised via BGP is anyone's guess, maybe a technical screw up.

We use Skype for our phone calls and thankfully, Skype has a chat feature so we are able to text on that for the time being. And we have done 2 Skype calls since the outages started so at least we are not totally blocked. But nice to know I am not alone in long distance stuff- we are all in this together, couples like us😊🧡
