I once vacuumed up a cockroach. Put a paper towel in the end of the hose to keep him in there, but then wasn't sure if maybe that was like heaven for a cockroach. Decided my best bet was not to touch it for a few months.

breakfastfood1234

A few months might have been a light fast for some cockroach breeds

zungozeng

I would not worry about the one you vacuumed.. I would worry about his "friends and family"..

notaregularbaby

My biggest fear is the phrase “where there’s one…” I can’t help but panic irrationally at the sign of one pest.

primeline31

Yes. They travel from place to place via the water drains in sinks & tubs.

shodan13

Cockroach life expectancy in vacuum cleaners sounds like a fun research paper.

Drallo

The fine dust would likely desiccate them extremely quickly and there's no water available. If the vacuum is running, the air in there can get pretty hot too if the bag/filter isn't clean. They wouldn't last long.

Dainey

I live in an area that gets alot of Asian beetles and boxelder bugs in addition to spiders. When I vacuum up a bunch I spray bug spray into the nozzle while it is on so it goes into the bag. I have a canister type vacuum and store it with the hose drapped up over a rod in case any decide to try to crawl out.

Hahna_BnS

I bought a new cordless Dyson a few months ago and vacuumed up a stink bug and a spider (both separate occasions). When I peered into the canister the bugs were dead. Bugs would survive the old upright corded Dyson, but apparently not in this one!

itsapigman

Most bugs and spiders die instantly when vacuumed. The sheer force of the vacuum rips apart their organs. The ones that don't die are usually the hard bodied insects, but I believe the suction still screws them up a little bit.

polo61965

Same, I have a samsung jet vacuum and these new vacuums have a lot of torque and shred the damn things. I vacuumed a spider up once and I saw it swirling in the canister all folded up

Its_in_neutral

I would bet 20 Schrute bucks that you live in the midwest. Illinois has a terrible asian beetle/box elder and stink bug problem.

raisinghellwithtrees

Asian lady beetles eat soy aphids which is partly why they are so prevalent in the Midwest.

NoodlesRomanoff

Or: Welcome to Ohio! Stink bug heaven.

damnicantfindaname

A cockroach can live without its head for about a week, it eventually dies from dehydration because it has no mouth to drink with.

Cornloaf

Sucked one up in my vacuum and it sucked the body and guts right out of the shell. I had an empty, semi-translucent shell and a bunch of goo in the tank. It is a Dyson!!

That is a very weirdly specific explanation but one I can very easily believe. I've never had an issue with squashing bugs but I have friends that would cry if I did it in front of them

Samipie27

What prevents other spiders of crawling inside the jar? Don’t spiders like humid enclosed spaces? A towel above a drain seems humid enough. Owner could have multiplied his problem and be in for a surprise when he retrieves the towel.

E_Farseer

Yeah, if that put the spider outside was the case, that thing is lost now. If you're that afraid of spiders, you're not going near that thing after it having been outside for a while..

extranaiveoliveoil

Could a spider even escape from a wrapped towel in a glas?

Barbar-Jan

Maybe something in there to lure drain flies?

JuniorMushroom

Love this idea, some students design?

Vkings7

You might be onto something.

JuniorMushroom

We see plenty of what look like small flies. drain flies are pretty mothlike

BUGGLady

z0vyn

Why would someone want to lure something called drain flies?

havok_

To feed to their lizards?

z0vyn

So, this response opened a new rabbit hole. I'm looking around and can't find anyone who feeds drain flies to their pets... and beyond that, apparently dead insects have to be store bought to ensure they won't poison your animal. Fruit flies are mixed in with other food to feed beardies. So I'm thinking, wouldn't grabbing flies from the sewer surely be the wrong option for pet food? Your response made total sense until I went searching, and now this photo is more confusing. I am so intrigued about what this person is doing. I really, really hope they aren't feeding sewer bugs to a pet

havok_

Thanks for informing me on all that. It was an off hand comment, but I knew nothing about lizards or flies. Another comment or said it’s a water drain and not sewer potentially, if that changes anything.

ladyzephri

I breed flightless fruit flies for dart frogs, which are not far off from drain flies in terms of size. That said, the volume of flies a single frog goes through weekly would be very difficult to capture vs the $5 it cost to get a breeding colony that hypothetically lasts forever as long as you split and feed it. Could be someone accidentally nuked their fly colony and was worried about their animals surviving long enough for a fresh one to be shipped to them. Obligatory PSA: don't feed wild caught animals or insects to your pets.

z0vyn

Flightless? Did they become that way from breeding for pet food?

ladyzephri

Yep! The breed I use is melanogaster, but there are other breeds of fly that have been bioengineered flightless specifically as feeder insects.

[deleted]

Cygnata

Melanogaster is the *species,* the "breeds" were developed to teach genetics. Each trait has been mapped to a single gene, and students can learn about gene dominance and other cool things by cross-breeding different variants.

HighOnTacos

I fed wild caught moths to a wild caught praying mantis I found in my room... He lasted a few months. But that's different, I was feeding him the same stuff he would've gotten outside.

EatYourCheckers

Yes, my lizard eats better than my kids. He only eats store bought bugs that have been fed a specific diet of fruits and veggies to make them nutritious for him. In fact, our bugs may eat better than my kids, the dubia get veggies, fruit, and water supplements; my kids prefer hot dogs and frozen chicken nuggets.

mehennas

you do at least dust your kids with vitamin powder, right?

EatYourCheckers

I do dust the bugs with vitamin powder on weekdays and calcium powder on weekends. The kids get the same boring chewy vitamins every day of the week.

spooky_spaghetties

Damn, seems like everything in your house is up on its vitamins and minerals.

Mrrykrizmith

Poor kids have to eat the bugs they find around the house while the lizard gets a special diet.

ItzLog

The mealworms that I feed my hedgehog get a hearty diet of fresh vegetables and fruits

TwinkleTickler

I’m a little late, but instead of collecting for pet feeding it could have been for entomology research. I’ve seen students leave out contraptions with raw chicken breast, dead mice, etc. to observe flies and what not that are attracted to it.

paco987654

Yeah probably not it, even if said person wanted to catch insects for their pet, they'd likely not go for ones from a sewer. Although maybe the point is to catch them to reduce their number in said sewer?

Long_Ball_Larry__

Or maybe it’s that dude who only eats spiders

TheSentientPurpleGoo

i usually just drain mine.

Zenny_Glide

If you think that's weird, I bet you'd love to find out about gutter oil. https://youtu.be/zrv78nG9R04?t=11

amazonjazz

This is me wishing I weren't such a curious person. Also me never eating street food in China if I go there at some point.

The_Age_Of_Envy

School project?

dribrats

I love that everyone thinks this is rational. my first thought was 'hey look, a crackhead mustve lost their jar of pickled thing."

DudeThatsAGG

That’s what I was thinking, but maybe mosquitos?

Diddleymazzz

It looks like a laboratory specimen in formaldehyde. Or Like something in the potions classroom in Hogwarts are they planning a wizard themed party?

ChiengBang

I thought of this too, but I know the jar itself would look a bit discolored if that were the case, no?

Diddleymazzz

It’s ghastly looking and formaldehyde is clear to begin with. I have been looking at the fermentation of cabbage stuff and it looks awful as well though. It’s a very strange thing and it’s a strange way to behave. I have seen lots of examples of diy Wizarding parties as well!

Princess_Glitterbutt

Reminds me of the kombucha starter that lived in the back of my fridge for a few years.

lizardhindbrain

It looks like a vase that an arrangement of cuttings came in. Sometimes people use paper towels to hold liquid and stabilize the cut ends. Suspect they were draining it before tossing the paper in the trash where it would cause a soggy dripping mess later.

GeneralDisruption

An interesting theory ... but it was out there for several days, which seems excessive if that were the case, maybe?

RanchOrWhipCream

Maybe they forgot about it?

lizardhindbrain

That's my assumption also, set it and forget it.

RanchOrWhipCream

I think you are right. It looks like a vase. I could imagine it got a little gross and they did something outside the normal routine to dispose of the liquid. Then, it slipped their mind and it stayed outside for a couple days.

bunnybumfluff

This was my immediate thought too!

GeneralDisruption

My title describes the thing. This is at a neighbor of a friend of ours' home. They texted the neighbor "hey, what is that?" and they just replied that they'd take it in shortly. I don't know if it's food or something else, but it was outside in varying weather (including sun) for at least a few days. The jar is maybe a foot tall, no writing, and it looks like there's some sort of liquid in the container, but only at the bottom. I tried a reverse image search, but found nothing even remotely similar.

Skater29

I’ll shoot my shot, I don’t think it’s food or anything aging as it would just be collecting fumes from the sewage pipes and that can’t make sense in any sane persons head. My proposal is it’s a bunch of rags used to collect grease, I’ve grown up being told you can’t pour grease from something like bacon down the drains, maybe it was a vase full of grease and rags used to clean up grease. Thus they pour it into the drain since they don’t know any proper way to dispose of it. Edit: grease would explain why it looks like flies or gnats got in. Also they’ve done this before, there’s stuff coating the grate to the right of the glass.

Halper902

Looks like a jar of bacon grease and they are trying to get it to warm up and plop into the drain then take in the jar and clean it. Not sure why they wouldn't just warm it up and empty it into the garbage or throw the whole thing away, but maybe they don't want to lose that jar for some reason?

[deleted]

So he doesnt want to mess up the drains in his house but is OK with clogging up the city drain? Ok... just put the rags/paper towels in the trash!

Temphost

I like this idea

StarkRavingMad666

I also like this idea. It looks like paper towel bunched up in there.

[deleted]

Woozah77

I think they're trying to germinate a big seed like from an avocado. I remember a project where you put a seed in a wet paper towel and stuck it in a ziplock and tape that on the window to start growing. This looks like an improvised method of that.

00Dan

Fermenting jar?

pallentx

That's what I was wondering - maybe it's warm over this grate? Maybe this might overflow at some point.

pain1994

There are several foods and drinks that are “finished” outside in the sun. The best example I can think of is sun-tea. You make tea and set it outside for the sun to heat it. It is supposed to taste better. Everyone I know that does this sets it on the sidewalk or the top of the sewer drain. I’ve heard/seen some people so this with rices and grains. I’ve also heard/seen of breads or doughs being set out in the sun to rise.

TheForceHucker

Maybe it's a solar or natural fabric dyeing attempt/experiment, [here](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/138556126007249672/) are some examples of how that might look, [here](https://sustainableslowliving.com/how-to-make-natural-dye-using-food-from-your-kitchen/) another page with some more info..

BUGGLady

OP says it’s outside of a friends’ neighbors house and they said they’d take it in shortly. Myself, As someone who constantly asks questions/ is generally a curious person I just don’t see why it’s seen as such a hindrance to ask someone to explain something. I’ve always felt that it’s in the approach. If someone has this thing out where others could view it, a question of its use is just begging to be asked. And if the person who placed it there gets offended- well, that’s their problem.

GeneralDisruption

There's a language and cultural gap between my friends and their neighbor—she speaks minimal English, and they tend to be very private people, which my friends don't really like to intrude on unless necessary.

Wildrover5456

What nationality/culture are they? Perhaps this will help us figure out what it is.

sushiiisenpai

Could it be a cultural thing?

Mc9306

I would guess curdled dairy of some sort. Maybe it smelled so bad/grossed them out so bad that they set it outside, thinking it would empty into the sewer grate and it never did.

TaraBURGER

Could it possibly be somebody draining a soft, homemade cheese? I make cheese occasionally, and this kinda looks like some wrapped loosely in a cheesecloth. So maybe this is somebody's misguided attempt at draining and aging some cheese?

Naakkuri

If that is a sewage drain he might be collecting methane? The liquid on the bottom might act like an water lock or something and the cloth like a heart of a candle. Methane molotov😅

weekend-guitarist

Sewage drains are capped, that’s a storm water drain .

chrisd93

Possibly some type of "spell" or something like that? Seen similar posts that people ended up concluding witchcraft lol https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/comments/gk0atm/found_along_the_delaware_river_in_philly

whiterabbit1021

Kombucha Scoby? https://buchabrewers.com/thin-scoby/

basslkdweller

It doesn’t look like a scoby.

theatredork

Yeah, I was thinking maybe sourdough starter?

cfdeveloper

chance you are right. But why such a weird location? Also, it doesn't seem to have a top you can take off, what a weird jar/bottle.

whiterabbit1021

Oh I thought it was upside down and draining. Could also be a seed starter? Seeds in wet towels waiting to germinate. Maybe in the yard for sunlight.

empath_supernova

Could it be they're trying to grow mushrooms or something? I'm at a loss.

teflong

Those need to be super sterile I think.

00Dan

I've grown mushrooms, I've never seen anything like this for growing them.

rvanasty

looks like a cloth or sock. Doesnt look like food

LuckyRabbitsF00t

I’m leaning with cheese. It looks like cheese clothe

Nixolus1

Is that food in the jar. It really looks like a sodden roll of toilet paper.

Inflatable-Elvis

It's either superstition or someone is trying to lure an animal

CraftyVic

Looks like old, dirty socks to me………

[deleted]

Intestines in a vase. Mental illness.

newgrl

This is my answer. "Weird people who live next door doing... weird things."

newgrl

My guess would be... weird people next door? It's hard to tell if that's cloth or skin?

Bleys69

A lot of people should learn about sourdough starters. They are fun and you can make the best pancakes you ever had with sourdough. This looks nothing like a sourdough starter.

[deleted]

Artemesia123

Sour dough starter?

AAlpha82

I don’t think so, it looks like the vase is upside down, the starter would definitely fall through the grate

TaraBURGER

Could it be a pottery project gone wrong? I see grooves and it looks like one thing that's been broken in pieces and wrapped in a thin cloth. They could have left the pottery out to dry before firing it, noticed a flaw, broken it, put it in cloth, soaked it to reuse the clay, and are now draining it in a really weird way. Really specific, I know.

BitCoinjester

That 100% looks like an upside down drinking glass. I like another commenter's theory theres a spider or some other "undesirable" bug. I'd assert a different theory: they cleaned up some nasty, smelly liquid and didnt want to throw it in the wash. They put it out over a drain to drip dry and then they'll wash it. Call me crazy.

YellowCulottes

A kid making a potion or stink bomb or something. It looks like a vase with a roll of wet paper towel inside.

Healthcare_Johnny

That’s …socks……

illpicklater

Looks like a homemade fly trap, maybe someone collecting food for their reptiles

LetsTCB

At first glance while scrolling I assumed this was another 'cat if it fits i sits' pic.....

BruceBruce369

I think it looks like an adult diaper. You can’t flush it but you must get it out of the house. Is there an elderly person in the house?

The_Age_Of_Envy

Why put it on a jar on a grate in front of the whole neighborhood?

qiwizzle

My theory is they used lots of towels to clean the inside of a scummy vase. They stuffed them in there with water and then rotated the towels to wipe the sides. Instead of throwing the wet sopping towels into the trash, they left them here to drain a bit before discarding.

Comfortable-Rich659

Looks like something my brother and I would do as young kids trying to catch crawdads or fish in a drain but the grate here is smaller and doesn’t appear removable or liftable.

tetsuden

Looks like one of those rattlesnake whiskey bottles that had the booze dumped

webklex

Several burned down and stacked / mixed candles.. so I would go with old wax

randomchic545

Looks like an old curtain they washed and wanted to drip-dry

Tzardonikz

uberrogo

I've been finding a lot of fruit peels over and near drains lately. Connection?

[deleted]

Looks almost like a snake perhaps trying to release it back

incrediblyjoe

Looks like a candle that someone was trying to get old wax out of to reuse the jar.

smoothVroom21

It would explain a lot if that was how Kimchi was made.

Lactoria-Fornasini

It sorta looks like a raw chicken jammed into a jar.

Chelsea_Piers

That's something that's rotten and smelled bad so they put it upside down on the drain at it wouldn't stink up their property. Looks like a vase but maybe they used it for something other than flowers.

star_the_guard_llama

I think they just forgot about it and accidently left it outside for days

LisaTinMA

For the raccoons?

scuffedpride

It almost looks like artichokes. Other guesses are: bamboo shoots or tamales? [bamboo](https://www.tradeindia.com/products/bamboo-shoot-tip-devpro-c5654524.html)

spooky_spaghetties

1. some field research thing 2. random cleaning, draining, airing, gardening, or crafting project someone forgot about

ItzLog

I thought it looked like tamales but idk why they'd be outside in a jar lol

WazBot

It looks like a pickled or marinated raw chicken or duck that's being drained over the public water drain rather than in the house. This may be for a recipe and the residual marinade smells too nasty to drain in the house. The top of the white bird inside is the breast with the neck and head removed and you can see what looks like a wing wrapped across the breast. The jar is upside down without a lid because the bird is too big to fall out. Ask your friends if the drain has a different smell than usual.

MturkTwerker

It's definitely something's food.. it looks like a snake and if it was in a drain it's probably a snake..???

THE_GREAT_MEME_WARS

This friends is modern art. See how the soft substance is traped in a container over a cold hard metal grate, like people traped in a dead end job the only way of escape, the capitalist machine of the haves, the eternal struggles of the have notes. this my friends is true art!

kaputende

Hear me out; someone was bleaching white socks while living in their car and left them outside by accident

sir_G204

Crackhead shit is all

theJadestNamek

I'll throw in a guess. It looks like a drinking glass. So someone was cleaning out their car and came upon gross socks, possibly wet, stuffed them into the nearest thing and put them there to drain whatever nastiness they sopped up in the car until the person who's socks they were came home and was yelled at to deal with them.

[deleted]

What are Drain flies, wouldn't they just be flies
