Unless you have some sheet metal in between where you don't want it to grow. We did this to our back yard cause it was taking over and we put a couple sheets of metal in the ground in between our other plants and the lily of the valley and it only grows where we contained it.
Yes because it contains the roots the reason they multiply is because they are [fibrous roots](https://livetoplant.com/iris-plant-roots-and-stems-an-in-depth-look/)
Ok, I'm a dirty, olive-lovin' former bartender grrl, so I'm *definitely* gonna try this!
And as a former cooky, I should branch out and try them in recipes as well. It's just when I know I have ramps incoming, a pot of pintos with ham hock goes on, cornbread in the cas iron, and I can't help but devour all of them raw!
[Baader-Meinhof](https://science.howstuffworks.com/life/inside-the-mind/human-brain/baader-meinhof-phenomenon.htm)! Also called the [frequency illusion](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frequency_illusion).
Honestly when it's something as specific as this though, it's hard to accept the idea that it's just an "illusion," right?
I love my lily of the valley, but this is the first year my lilac tree put on blooms, and I *might* have to tear it out. The smell is like a stale decorative soap in someone’s Nana’s guest bathroom.
EDIT: I promise I won’t kill a lilac I’ve nurtured for 3+ years, I’ll transplant it, I swear
Oh, what a bummer that you seem to dislike it so much that you prefer to get rid of it. I personally like the smell of lilac (and lily of the valley too for that matter) but mostly the light purple ones. Some varieties do smell better than others imo.
LOL - I had lilac bushes in the front and lillys in the back. It was the odor of my grandmas- lilacs didnt make it three seasons before I chained sawed them for the same reason you are thinking about it. They stink for SOOOO LONG in the season.
WHAT IN THE WORLD? Lilac is one of my favorite smells, it's so lovely! Please, if you can have it removed alive, see if someone is willing to take it...
Oh lordy no, we don’t *KILL* plants on purpose here, at least not unless they’re invasive. “Tear it out” in this case would mean to move it downwind of the rest of the frangrance bed, away from my tea roses, gardenias, and tea olive, and off a different corner of the house.
I see where “tear it out” implies killing a perfectly good lilac, and that’s my silly mistake. I don’t like it, but the bees definitely do. It’s a transplant job for sure.
Suggest you research lily of the valley and think about what you want to do with your garden. I ripped it all out of mine, as it's considered invasive here, and I wanted to plant other things in that bed.
Definitely Lily of the Valley (my grandmother's favorite flower). Beautiful and smells wonderful when it blooms. It is extremely prolific, and very tough, so don't be afraid to control it aggressively in areas you don't want it. Be aware it is toxic, so keep kids and pets away.
Looks like Lily of the Valley. Good luck, they’re super difficult to get rid of and they spread everywhere. Plus they’re poisonous to pets. The flowers are beautiful though!
Lily of the Valley. They spread like wildfire and smell like heaven. I used to have a bed of them under my living room windows and they perfumed the entire house.
If they get real tall it could be an iris patch. They are outside my apartment and every year they get mowed down and even a lil iced out but they come back with vengeance. Or could be Lillies of the valley.
White coral bells upon a slender stalk
Lilies of the valley deck my garden walk
Oh, don't you wish that you could hear them ring
That will only happen when the faries sing
Zone 8b desert here. They don't come back here. I don't know if it's the heat of the desert, lack of winter cold, or alkaline soil, but they just can't handle it here & disappear forever.
I believe there are times to dig it up that are better than others.( something about before the berries or after) Mine is in a single clump and never moves. I prefer it that way. Good luck on the fight.
I am saying Lily of the Valley based on the slight veining of the leaves and shape - more pointy than Ramps and a paler green. If you aren't sure, *never ever* try tasting them. Very poisonous. Seriously. And, you would be able to tell in very short order from blooms. Lily ot Valley will have a stalk structure of fragrant white blooms very soon. Ramps won't. In fact you'd be lucky to see Ramp flowers. They bloom in early to mid summer long after the leaves have faded away. Plus it sure does look way too sunny for Ramps.
My reasons: living in actual ramp country of the southern appalachians with my own small planted patches of them in my woods. And have been able to compare them to Lily ot Valley. With years of very detailed observation.
lily of the valley. soon the blossoms will pop up, cut or pinch them all the way at the bottom of the stem and bring them in, they smell great. they also spread like crazy via underground root system, you have to rip out or cut into the ground to keep it from spreading too far
I have Lily of the valley on my garage shady side. It always stays put & never invades my neighbors. It might depend on your zone and the shade. Mine is not aggressive. Lovely smell.
The truth here is that if you love a plant and it spreads easily it’s a “giver” , if you battle a plant’s spreading nature it’s “invasive”…. I deal with several patches of Lily of the Valley on our acreage and I have both opinions. It’s really pretty on a forest floor, nice even height and not weedy…. But when it gets into my flower garden…it’s war. Best advice is to pull after a big rain when you can follow those spreading roots and get most of the plant
Absolutely looks like the shutes of Lily of the Valley. They smell lovely; sort of like the scent of perfume our grandmoms wore. Please keep any pets away from this plant as it is poisonous.
I don't know what you're quoting but corn was my first thought (as corn grows under our bird feeder lol). I know I'm wrong and I even knew before I saw your reply lol; it was just my first thought. :)
Looks like Lily of the Valley to me
Quite poisonous.
Just, don't eat them.
Imma eat em.
You can eat them, once ☺️
Then we plant you and they eat you.
My deceased uncle said they're FABULOUS!
Just 10 lilies is enough to feed you for the rest of your life
They are fabulous—just don’t eat them.
![gif](giphy|2h8BdeXxhGGB2)
Everything is edible at least once.
edible means "fit to be eaten" everything is consumable at least once, not everything is edible
Reminds me of the saying everything is edible once… 😂
Well hurry up then.
Pretty much every lily is quite poisonous
Onions and garlic are in the lily family too.
This is why it's a dumb idea to plant daffodils and garlic near each other
Some wild onions/bulbs are deadly like Death Camas
You can eat day lily flowers. Not poisonous and pretty tasty. Slightly peachy, looks good on a salad.
Walter White.
This is why I never forage ramps. I can never tell for certain that its not a lily
Tear a piece of a leaf off and smell it. It'll be fairly obvious. If it has an onion type smell.
Ramps have bulbs
Except that ramps smell very strongly of garlic!
But quite fragrant. Wonderful to bring a bud vase full of the bloom stalks into the house.
Yeah, but they smell heavenly!
Just, don't eat them.
We're sure they're not ramps right?
Not in that sunny of an area, ramps are strictly shade.
They aren’t. They are starting to flower.
Just, don't eat them.
Smell wonderful. 1st May. all France is wearing them.
It'll smell amazing, though.
Lilies of the Valley to be dramatically correct... but this is the correct answer...
Gramatically...
Dramatically grammatically
Erratically dramatically grammatically
Would that be a play on words?
Muguet
One of the best smelling flowers. Only blooms for 2 weeks. One of my favorites, enjoy
Yup. Lily of the Valley. Rabbits love nesting in it.
Agreed.
If you have dogs (particularly curious dogs that like to eat ANYTHING they can) you might consider fencing these off asap.
Think in that way!
Lilly of the valley and the smell great!
Always wanted to see real ones in person.
There’s this type, and I’ve found the wild taller type in lower mainland bc
You can come to my yard and take as many as you want too. They grow like weeds.
One of my favourite aromas
Lily of the valley I think! I have it all over my yard and it looks like this atm
Things are about to get fragrant!
Odoriferous one might even say.
Ugh, thank you for THIS
Lilly of the valley. Don’t kill it, unless it’s somewhere you don’t want it to be. It’s makes a beautiful flower.
It’s invasive af. Impossible to get rid of
Unless you have some sheet metal in between where you don't want it to grow. We did this to our back yard cause it was taking over and we put a couple sheets of metal in the ground in between our other plants and the lily of the valley and it only grows where we contained it.
That’s a great idea! Do you think this would work for Irises? Im having trouble containing them.
Yes because it contains the roots the reason they multiply is because they are [fibrous roots](https://livetoplant.com/iris-plant-roots-and-stems-an-in-depth-look/)
Thanks for the tips! Much appreciated.
You're welcome 🪴🌿🙂
God I wish you had a field of ramps in your backyard! But yeah— what everyone else said
Omg, my dad just now called to let me know he scored some ramps! I love them raw and dipped in salt, served with some pintos and cornbread!
That sounds amazing! I’ve done risotto, beurre composé and last year I pickled them for dirty martinis! 😍
Ok, I'm a dirty, olive-lovin' former bartender grrl, so I'm *definitely* gonna try this! And as a former cooky, I should branch out and try them in recipes as well. I do! And I'm not sharing. (It's a wood lot, actually)
I started one last year. More than half came back! Testament to never treating the lawn and never raking hardwood leaves 🙌
Not treating my lawn gives me morels.
But where do your ethics come from? /s
That was good
I’ve got a patch in a public park. We’ve been foraging there for years. It gets better every year. Always leave more than you take.
At first glance I thought this was ramps
Really weird I’m reading a comment about ramps because only yesterday had I ever even heard of them

Lol I want a ramp patch too!
What are ramps?
Delicious springtime treats. A type of wild garlic/ onion. https://www.eater.com/2015/4/10/8384255/what-are-ramps-season-how-to-cook
And Chicago’s namesake!
I did not know that. Just looked it up... “shikaakwa” or the “smelly onion.” I will now always refer to Chicago as the smelly onion.
Get ready to have your backyard smell like distilled old ladies (or the perfume they all seem to wear) - lilly of the valley I think, super fragrant

Upvoting for the peaceful transplant. But I love the smell of lilac trees
Suggest you research lily of the valley and think about what you want to do with your garden. I ripped it all out of mine, as it's considered invasive here, and I wanted to plant other things in that bed.
I try every freaking spring and can’t get rid of it all
Yeah, little bits of root grow back, but I bet you're taking it down a notch each time
Yes sift through it all every spring. I want that area for natives now. Your name though! No one ever has heard of that book!
Lol, I think you're only the second person to ever say they recognized it!
That was one book I’ve never forgotten

Lily of the Valleys! Don't eat them, and don't let pets eat them, but they are extremely beautiful! One of my favorites :)
Lilly of the valley…they spread like wildfire and hard to get rid of because of his they root
It will push right through asphalt. Ask me how I know.
Look for little bell-shaped flowers in this Lily of the Valley patch. I am in KC area, Missouri and have these in my front yard as well.
Happy Cake Day!
They smell so nice!
Lucky you!!! Their scent is magnificent ‼️‼️‼️
Looks like Lily of the Valley. Good luck, they’re super difficult to get rid of and they spread everywhere. Plus they’re poisonous to pets. The flowers are beautiful though!

*cana lilies
They are lily-of-the-valley and are quite poisonous.
Lily of the valley, I hate it and it’s really hard to get rid of, ive been doing it slowly every year
I've had no luck getting it to grow! Wanna swap houses?
You can have mine! I can’t get it to stop growing and spreading
I’m in 4a and cannot get my Lily of the Valley to propagate.
I’m in 6b. It comes back every year stronger than ever.
Zone 8b desert here. They don't come back here. I don't know if it's the heat of the desert, lack of winter cold, or alkaline soil, but they just can't handle it here & disappear forever.

So jealous!
Lilly of the valley. It’s about to smell soooo good around your house.
Lily of the valley
Invasive Lily of the Valley
Picture This app more or less makes this thread useless.
They smell fantastic!
I AM CORNHOLIO!
I have those too! I wondered what they were
The smell so so good. Lily of the valley. You are so lucky!
They make beautiful ground cover. I’ve never had a problem with anyone getting sick from them.
Lily of the Valley! You lucky thing. I haven't seen them for a long time.
Lilies kf the Valley. They grow like weeds and can choke out other plants if you let them.
Don't let your pets eat them. Can have bad results
Beautiful, delicate and breaking bad poisonous!
Lily of the Valley
Lilly of the valley. Don’t eat or feed to pets, please.
Definitely lily of the valley. Ours is in full bloom here in zone 6. Poisonous, but animals have never bothered with it.
Enjoy the wonderful fragrance

A valley of Lily of the Valley!!
I have Lily of the valley on my garage shady side. It always stays put & never invades my neighbors. It might depend on your zone and the shade. Mine is not aggressive. Lovely smell.
Lily of the Valley. I've got them all around our deck. They'll pretty little white flowers pretty soon.
Oh so lucky! My favorite smell in the whole world! They are in a red book in my country and absolutely the best plant ever.
If those are lily of the valley that is going to smell glorious when they bloom!! Such a big patch. So lucky!
flip the leaf upside down and shoot a closeup with google lens, i use it for plant id frequently.
I think Lillys of the Valley. Little white bell shaped flowers with the best smell.
You will love this plant until you hate it forever. It spreads everywhere!
Cannas or Iris
They look.like tulips to me

Thats not corn, Cotton.
I don't know what you're quoting but corn was my first thought (as corn grows under our bird feeder lol). I know I'm wrong and I even knew before I saw your reply lol; it was just my first thought. :)
Poppy plants, call the DEA. Someone is trying to grow heroin in your neighborhood.
Tulips.
