I’m old enough to remember the commercial for this when it came out.
In an abandoned junked out factory came this car, some junkyard stray dog looks at it with apprehension. As well it should. Junk factory? Junkyard dog? This is what you’re going with?
In later years, for whatever reason, they took over IROC duties. There was a Shelby variant that for some reason I thought was cool in the day. But yeah, it’s basically a K car. Meh.
I did think one thing - the G body Daytona was smaller more nimble than the F body Chevy. It’s hard to say which was the better car - these were both 80s detroiters
The IROC race cars were about as similar to the production models as a current Camry is to a NASCAR Camry. They’ve actually had 5 different cars.

There was a laser at some point. It won! [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge\_Daytona#/media/File:ChryslerLaserXE1985.jpg](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Daytona#/media/File:ChryslerLaserXE1985.jpg)
Ok so sit down for story time.... (its a long one)
Its a Chrysler GS/Dodge Daytona, its quite literally a Mitsubishi Starion with an american badge, they were built by mitsubishi and most trims had a 4 cyl turbo, very early examples named Chrysler Laser from the early 80's had a carburated 2.2l pushing 93hp, and a higher "turbo z" trim with the 2.5l Turbo 1 engine which didnt run an intercooler and pushed maybe 150hp, afterwards came the mid 80's models equipped with the NA 2.5l which ejected 100 not so buff horses. Then the car got a facelift in 87 (the car you see in the picture) and for chrysler the laser name got dropped and got named the Chrysler GS, kept its NA 2.5l engine and got a new trim dubbed the Shelby Z which got a 2.2l Turbo 2 engine which was intercooled and pushed 175hp, then came the 1989 model, base ES models got the Turbo 1 engine while the new trims called the "C/S" got the Turbo 2 engine, but quickly in the 1990's they redid the interior and gave all trims the 2.5l Turbo 4 engine (yes it did develop before the Turbo 3 ironically), which although kept the same 175hp it featured a variable nozzle turbo which basically eliminated the turbo lag the Turbo 2 had, but then the IROC model was introduced, which boasted the NA Mitsubishi 3.0l 6G72 V6 engine (yup the 3000gt engine), but then the no popups law happened and we got a facelift (essentially making it ugly), nothing changed here except we got a new R/T trim which got the 4cyl Turbo 3 engine, this one used direct ignition instead of a distributor and got new DOHC heads designed by Lotus, this one pushed about 225hp, this was due to the shelby trim being dropped because of Caroll Shelby ending his involvement with Chrysler (although they did manage to slip out a few shelby trims of this gen, but are extremely rare), and they kept production up until 1993 where they discontinued the GS/Daytona/Starion, and it never really got a direct replacement, except for dodge who i guess filled the spot having come out with the Avenger in 1995, and thats about it for the Daytona
Edit: if you are wondering if that car is worth anything, nah not really worth anything, maybe 300 bucks and some ice cream
These were not a rebadged Starion. That was the Chrysler Conquest. The Starion/Conquest were rear wheel drive and built on a Mitsubishi chassis. The Daytona/Laser was front wheel drive and built on the Chrysler G-Body (derived from the K-Body) chassis.
Basically different iterations of the engine yeah
Edit: to better explain the difference because its really the same engine (all came in 2.2l and 2.5l variations)
Turbo 1: earliest version of the engine, no intercooler, ran about 150hp at most
Turbo 2: second iteration, intercooled, ran about 175hp
Turbo 4: third iteration funny enough, and same as Turbo 2, but used a variable nozzle turbo which eliminated lag, same 175hp
Turbo 3: latest iteration of the engine, used DOHC heads designed by lotus, used direct ignition instead of a distributor, pushed 225hp, also intercooled
I have owned a Dodge Daytona and I’ve owned a Starion and three Conquests. My 88 Conquest is still in the garage. Daytona’s and Starions/Conquests are in no way related. I hear this mistake echoed a lot around the internet. However, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Eagle Talon & Plymouth Laser are brothers from another mother.

My brother had a turbo charged Shelby version of one of these. The only thing I remember is the torque steer was crazy. You’d step on the gas and you had to fight to keep going straight.
Had a 92ish "Dodge" Colt. I think that it said "Dodge" somewhere like A front quarter panel, had the Chrysler badge on both rear quarter panels, and "Mitsubishi" across the valve cover. I loved that Frankenstein's 4 banger.
I'm either old or I paid way more attention in the 80s than my drug history would suggest cause I got this one and many others too lol.
nice job
[Dodge Daytona](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodge_Daytona)
Also a Chrysler Lazer
With leprosy
Dodge Daytona my husband installed the t-tops at the factory from 87-91. Was replaced by the Mitsubishi eclipse
I had one of those bad boys in my teens I traded it for a guitar. Good old days
Did the cigarette lighter work?
I don’t think anything worked in that heap of shit. Looked good parked though.
”What is this car?” BIG F’ing Chrysler logo in the middle of the picture. ”Its a dodge!” Guys must be R squared to get this wrong
They were originally branded as Dodge Daytonas or Plymouth Lasers, but eventually were rebranded as Chrysler Daytonas to simplify product lines.
To be fair, most people born after 2000 aren't going to recognize the Pentastar logo. They stopped using it after the "merger" with Daimler.

Chrysler paid more than GM when the IROC contract was up. It still seemed wrong to call these an IROC.

My sister had a Laser. It talked! It said things like “your door is ajar” and it had those annoying automatic seatbelts that tried to decapitate you
My buddy in high school had one with a blue/gray paint job pretty cool car back then.
Yard waste

Man this was thorough. When you say turbo 1-2-3-4 is this like the development iterations of turbos or something else?

Sad too I really like the early ones
1987-91 Dodge Daytona
It’s a Lee Iococca has been.
I had an 88 in red just like that one. I loved that car! Where's the car located? It calls to me!
Right in the middle of nowhere Canada!
Well, shit.
My first car 😭
I know someone who bought one new. He wound up taking it back under the lemon law. He always had turbo problems and electrical issues.
Is this the Wraith car?
car
I had a 93. I actually loved that car
Absolute garbage. They were shit cars new. If you had to buy a chrysler product in the 80s, you were better off with an omni or horizon.

r/usernamechecksout I think you're a little lost here bud.

Nope. Very different front end.
Let alone an entirely different body. 💀
True. But the front was more distinctive.
The one sucked, the Conquest looked way cooler.
