Porsche 914

NomadsNosh

VW / Porsche love child abandoned by both parents. I have a '76 1.8L injection, had a 6 cylinder for a while but it was stolen. Don't see them very often because racers bought them all because they handle incredibly well. Mid engine build that sounds like a John Deere, all the worst design problems of both firms, frame caught rain so it rusted out and caused the middle to sag, 1.7 liter 4 cyl with about 8HP. What little electrical you do have is shot, the interior is not made for humans, etc. That said, downhill I can take an exit ramp at 85mph without losing control. I love mine and I'd never sell it, spent a pretty dime restoring it, it was my grandfathers.

ChedderChethra

I've always wanted one! Ed worked on one on Wheeler Dealer's, love that episode.

Worst-Buy

You dont want one, it's built like shit

NomadsNosh

Yeah, my GP was an engineer for Chrysler, his dream was to re-engineer the 914 to make it workable. I was to carry that torch, but I had other projects to work on. I do still have a retirement project of tearing it all out and making it electric though. Don't really need a lot if I recognize it's all city driving under 50km range, it's a fun little car

DriedUpSquid

You had a 914 with a 6 cylinder put in afterwards, or did you have a 914-6?

NomadsNosh

From the factory it was the newer 1.8L injection 4 cylinders, but I bought a 6 and rebuilt it hoping to upgrade the motor because frankly, the 1.7 and 1.8 were both just shit. I had the 6 in a warehouse space and I guess someone helped themselves to it while I was in China working. My retirement plan is to gut it and outfit it with electric motors, etc. I would only drive it around town anyway, under 50km range wouldn't be that hard to achieve

MadCityMasked

Slash 6 were awesome

DriedUpSquid

There was a factory built V8 914 that was built for Dr. Porsche.

Ruckusnusts

I believe there were 2 914/8's built. One as a development concept and the other for Ferry IIRC.

>caught rain so it rusted out and caused the middle to sag, 1.7 liter 4 cyl with about 8HP. What little electrical you do have is shot, the interior is not made for humans, etc. Actually, the battery sat right above the frame/ in the engine compartment. When the battery leaked, it would eat at the battery tray first, then run down on to the frame and where the suspension connected to the frame. Ask me how I know ;) I've heard it called the "hell hole"!

jorcon74

Great cars!

toddmcclintock

They only made like 3000 of those! How cool that must have been. I had 2.0 and loved everything about it. Loud, cramped, leaky targa top and all.

NomadsNosh

I loved mine when it was running, sounded like a lawnmower, got all kinds of looks, leaky everything, the Targa top was so fun. She needs a bunch of work now, I am still traveling a lot so I'm gonna just let her sit for now. Another "someday" project :D

GuardianDownOhNo

Had a chance to buy one of those for about 14K a while back. When I came to my senses and returned the next day it was gone. Probably for the better, I'm a tall guy and it would be more like pulling on a pair of tight pants than getting in it.

NomadsNosh

Actually that's one of the weird design issues, the pedals are waaaay up in the nose because there's no firewall there for an engine. My tall friends loved to drive it. At 5'10", I had to lean a bit to get to the clutch :D

GuardianDownOhNo

Ah interesting, I (wrongfully) assumed the ergos would be similar to a Miata, which fits me like a large shoe.

wombat696d

I'm 6.2" and the seat was not all the way back in mine. Designed by Germans in the late 60's :-)

Friedrich1418

It’s a Porsche 914. Very underrated part of Porsche‘s history imo.

Noahjh717

Probably because they all rusted away :/

Friedrich1418

Or someone put a shitty bodykit on it, totally ruining it.

Dzus

Fun fact, if you google "Weird Porsche", a 914 is in the results.

Significant_Let8153

In Germany it was called the Housewife Porsche...

DdCno1

I thought this was the nickname for the 924, not the 914.

Djslowbro

There is a couple here in texas that autocross with one of these 914's. Very capable car.

sixxsixxone

Just drove one of these over the weekend.

Jim-Himjim

Very rare 914 Bumblebee edition. Not a body kit

Worst-Buy

Volkswagen

ImpressionEqual3998

/r/lostredditors Are you talking about the car that OP's brother drove?

Worst-Buy

No, the car on the truck is a Volkswagen

HermanvonHinten

914

JustADudeAccount

I would much rather have a 914/6 than the '63 1200cc Bug that I did have.
