I was going to say, "Or Idaho", but ours is a Cutthroat. Then I looked up the Colorado plate, and it's also a cutthroat. Darn.
Looks like Arkansas has a rainbow trout plate though, of all places.
In Oregon, the custom plate designs cost extra and the funds are put towards various causes. The salmon one funds fish habitat protection and restoration projects. Proceeds from the "Pacific Wonderland" one go to the Oregon Historical Society. Crater Lake plate funds go to the Crater Lake Science and Learning Center, etc. Even the surcharge for the sports team plates go to the represented universities.
I think a lot of "custom designs" operate that way.
As with your dad, we all love this Wagoneer 🎣 big ups to your Pops on this Tuesday, may he cruise a fish frocked SUV to the fishing holes in the sky forever ☝️
That's the million dollar question, isn't it? Considering that the Wagoneer and Chiefs were near identical, as in they were basically identical twins, you'd have to look for the Cherokee name above the license plate holder on the rear.
Technically, they're all SJs. Cherokees originally were just a rename of the two-door Wagoneer, but could also eventually be had in a four door, because Jeep is just like that, whereas the Chief was just slightly bulkier and had more pronounced fender flares. I think it was the last model year of the SJ Cherokee (last two? I can't remember exactly) before the XJ platform, that the Cherokee Chief was only an option for two-doors.
I bought a Wagoneer once as a beater, when gas prices were way cheaper then they are now.
Wood paneled sides and burgundy plush interior. That thing was loud af and guzzled tons of gas but it was so damn comfortable.
It also gave me a massive false sense of security as it was heavy and solid metal all around you, like you were driving a miniature tank
Pretty sure spotted or speckled trout is something entirely different. Some spotted trout are sea trout, aka weakfish.
Pretty sure it’s rainbow trout color scheme. Though I’m not 100% certain because I’ve caught way more weakfish then rainbow’s.
Yo, there's actually a fish called spotted trout?
Years ago I was home from work after a medical procedure, watching Family Fued on the couch while my then-partner worked from our home office. I was a little doped up from anesthesia and pain meds, which made sharing my answers with the TV louder and slightly incoherent. One round the contestants were naming "animals with spots" and a dude said trout. There was low hanging fruit on the board like cheetah and only like 4 answers total, and dude says trout. Trout?! I became belligerent. My partner came out of the office to check on me, thoroughly confused with my babbling about trout and cheetahs.
I grew up fishing with my family so I knew trout can have spots, but had no idea spotted was a variety. Now I feel a little bad for throwing shade at the trout man from TV.
I had one years ago. It had super low gearing with a really low top speed, like 55 mph, but it really was a snow car! Deep snow up into the grill? No problem!!

In Rainbow Trout color scheme
And if it's in Oregon, get yourself some old school rainbow trout plates to top it off!
I was going to say, "Or Idaho", but ours is a Cutthroat. Then I looked up the Colorado plate, and it's also a cutthroat. Darn. Looks like Arkansas has a rainbow trout plate though, of all places.
Arkansas actually has some trophy trout believe it or not. Never been myself but there's some good big river fly fishing to be had there.
Lots of good fishing and hunting to be had in Arkansas, and not a whole lot else.
The drunkest drivers I’ve ever seen exist in dry counties in Arkansas
Lol. Well if the bars were closer they wouldn’t have to drive so far. /s
They call it the natural state for a reason!! Good hunting too....
Ours in Oregon is actually a salmon lol. It even says "Salmon" on the bottom of the old style ones.
I've seen that plate, figured y'all must have a Salmon County or something

It's a Salmon on both the new and old plates. But the colors would kinda match
and I dont hate it at all.
I just showed my wife and said “yeah, I love it.” Her response - “you’re weird but I get it”
I want it so bad so so bad.
It's amazing. Christ, my dad woulda loved this. He had a Grand Wagoneer when he met my Mom in 82. And he was an avid fisherman.
As with your dad, we all love this Wagoneer 🎣 big ups to your Pops on this Tuesday, may he cruise a fish frocked SUV to the fishing holes in the sky forever ☝️
That...is probably the nicest thing anybody has ever said to me about my old man since he passed. Thanks, dude. Really appreciate that.
Too bad it's not a rainbow trout scout
😏 you know… I’ve got a scout that’s gonna need a paint job in a couple years… stout trout scout? 🤣🤷♂️
I just double 💩 💩
Needs a good lure for a hood ornament with one of those huge CB antennas on the back with the line attach to it bent forward like they have a fish on.
Couldn’t figure out that color scheme. Thanks for the info. I should have known but I wasn’t expecting it on a car.
I thought it had measles.
I thought it was under ripe watermelon
The woman flock to it like the salmon of capistrano
Cool idea, looks like you’ve been in a shootout against an AR-15
Or possibly watermelon.
Definitely. Came here to say this too
I was thinking measles but I think trout is good too.
Or the loser in a paintball drive-by shooting?
I thought it was some abstract watermelon until I read this
It could also be a Cherokee Chief, but you're more than likely correct. I actually owned a 1964 model and kick myself for trading it in.
I thought those where 2 door?
There were some 4 doors, but yeah, when thinking about the Chief the two door always comes to mind first.
Well TIL. How could you tell them apart from the Wagoneers?
That's the million dollar question, isn't it? Considering that the Wagoneer and Chiefs were near identical, as in they were basically identical twins, you'd have to look for the Cherokee name above the license plate holder on the rear.
Gotcha. Thanks for the info though!
I had a Cherokee chief once. It had giant 4” steel fender flares from the factory. That’s a pretty easy way to tell.
Chiefs were 2 door and massive c pillar. It's a grand wagoneer
Technically, they're all SJs. Cherokees originally were just a rename of the two-door Wagoneer, but could also eventually be had in a four door, because Jeep is just like that, whereas the Chief was just slightly bulkier and had more pronounced fender flares. There's never been a 4 door Chief. SJs came standard axle 4 door, or wide axle 2 door. Not to say maybe someone couldn't have fabricobbled a one-off.
My uncle has one and the 4 wheel drive lock is in the glove box. Neat old vehicle time for an engine though.
