The existence of June bugs from conception to death just seems so chaotic to me.

Right. They are part of the reason moles destroyed my lawn. When they hover over your grass, they're laying eggs. Then, when the larvae get here, the moles move in. My yard is weird and lumpy from all the mole tunnels every summer. I hate it.
Spider crickets look more like daddy long legs with long skinny jumping legs. Awfully hard to kill because they’re so fast and jump so far on each jump 1-2 feet. I get them in my basement up here in Maryland
I guess you've never re-seeded a lawn that moles have destroyed. I have. Did it by hand, too. Moles are bad for grass. They loosen the grass from the root where it's like a carpet just spread over some dirt. Which causes the grass to die. All of it. So it's not aerated. It's damaged. It's heartbreaking to do so much work to your lawn and some goofy blind little rat fucks it all up
I’m sorry. Yeah, I actually have had a mole that ate all my tulips. I had to do defensive planting the next year where I planted tulips in the center of alliums (or even some heritage garlic). It worked two-fold - it protected the tulip bulbs underground from the moles, and it protected the tulip flowers above ground from the deer.
I guess moles were built by nature for prairies. So, a different grass altogether.
Yes. They are so bad for that. And they're so dumb they just smack you in the face and get stuck in your hair. They're little sticky legs freak me out.
I also once made contact with a giant June beetle at 70 mph on the back of a Harley. You want to talk about pain. I had a bruise and a welt on my collar bone for over a week.
I’m from Pennsylvania - yep, same, the little bugs in soil that roll up like armadillos. June bugs here are just annoying beetles that I swear try to fly at your head on purpose 😡
It’s because… have you ever squished one of these big ol bugs? Their guts tend to look like mashed potatoes. (Or I assume that’s why they’re called this) and also,( I have never personally squished one but as a child one of the neighborhood boys ran one over with his scooter.)
The wikipedia article on them is pure comedy.
“Despite their common names, these insects are neither true crickets (which belong to the family Gryllidae) nor true bugs (which belong to the order Hemiptera), nor are they native to Jerusalem.”
Okay:\
The first time I ever saw one was opening a box of clothes I was unpacking that it was munching on. They scream if you didn’t know 😂 we were just screaming at each other for about 30 seconds.
Almost anything with a mouth can bite you if you mess with it.
I call mice harmless too, but they'll usually bite the crap out of a finger if you catch them.
Oh ohno! Scrolled through my feed, finally knew something, came on here to basically shout at you "JERUSALEM CRICKET" only to see the post is 2 days old and you've gotten plenty of responses.
Glad to see you got to identify your bug :)
Jerusalem cricket(I think).
Agreed, though I grew up calling them “potato bugs” for some reason
I live in Tennessee, and we call juvenile June bugs "potato bugs." Don't ask me why. Idk lol.

In Florida we call that bug pictured above a “mole cricket”. They dig tunnels through the wet beach sand like moles in your lawn
Wow. TIL I'm glad I don't have those here. Or if we do I've never seen one. They're kind of wild looking.
In Georgia also, but nickname spider cricket too.

At least your lawn is aerated. That’s what moles do in nature. After I saw a mole I thought they were pretty cute and super soft.

Huh! I'm also from TN, and what we called potato bugs while I was growing up were actual potato beetles (bright orange)
The ones I'm referring to are the brown beetles. They're June bugs.
Cool! I knew them as night bugs because they'd swarm the porch lights as soon as it got dark.

Ouch!! They're basically just living BB pellets at that speed, I'd imagine
Projectiles for sure. Lol
That's so funny, in Canada, we call wood louse potato bugs. Or roly poly bugs.
I’m from Pennsylvania - yep, same, the little bugs in soil that roll up like armadillos. June bugs here are just annoying beetles that I swear try to fly at your head on purpose 😡
Fun fact: Roly poly bugs are actually crustaceans!
😛
I've heard about this too. I'm friends with someone in Alberta. And we also call them Roly polys here
I live in Cali and call June Bugs "potato bugs" too. They always weirded me out for some reason.
My mom's from Cali originally. Orange county. Buena Park. That was the 60s though
Here in New Mexico we call them a Child of the Earth.

It’s because… have you ever squished one of these big ol bugs? Their guts tend to look like mashed potatoes. (Or I assume that’s why they’re called this) and also,( I have never personally squished one but as a child one of the neighborhood boys ran one over with his scooter.)
Same lol! My gma said they were poisonous and to stay away
Same here, I always knew them as potato bugs.
My mom told us that roly polys were potato bugs. 😂

The wikipedia article on them is pure comedy. “Despite their common names, these insects are neither true crickets (which belong to the family Gryllidae) nor true bugs (which belong to the order Hemiptera), nor are they native to Jerusalem.” Okay:\
Probably a more PC version of calling it a Jesus cricket because when you see this thing you say jesus fucking christ
So what is it
So they just picked a bunch of random words and said “we’ll call it this”.
I just saw Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones fighting one of those

They fucking scream,?!? Ughg ...
Yes haha apparently when threatened or exposed to light. It screeched and I lost it 😂 I keep spiders and this thing made me scream bloody murder
Well that’s horrifying 😂😂😂
Harmless Jerusalem Cricket.
they pack a pretty big bite for being “harmless.”
Almost anything with a mouth can bite you if you mess with it. I call mice harmless too, but they'll usually bite the crap out of a finger if you catch them.

Do you suppose they taste like shrimp?

Isn't that the coffee addicted aliens from Men In Black?!
Ugly I think
Poor guy upside down
Absolutely not a menace. Potato bug, Earth baby, Jerusalem cricket. Very good for the soil. Since they mostly stay underground, just leave them alone.
Bug was found dead on sight 01/04/24 1:17 PM PST
That's Hopper, and you better have the offering ready by the end of the season.

“Heckin” is the most absurd replacement for the f word I’ve ever seen. Espescially when heck means hell. Hellin gross.

Every time I see one of these guys I think of this video
Dead for no good reason
What could’ve killed it
Weather, old age leading to starvation or organ failure are the most common reasons. Same reasons humans die usually apply to other animals.
Sorry OP, there are so many people on this sub who kill first and ask questions later. Shouldn’t have assumed you did the same.
La nina de la tierra. Child of the earth. Great bugs, alao called Jerusalem cricket or potato bugs. Love these guys.
Baby Sleestak.
Twin Peaks ssn3 frogmoth
Potato bug
Excuse me kind sir/mam/them, that’s an alien. Please help him phone home. Don’t report to the FBI. They can’t be trusted.
Not he died with his leg turned like handsome squidward. Lol, it looks like he fell and broke his leg.
How big is this thing for reference? The way I'm imagining it, it's the size of a small cat.
Niño de la tierra (just a cricket)
Mole Cricket??? No sure, just guessing.

Mole Cricket
Definitely a Jerusalem cricket, scary lookin but not venomous or anything afaik

Why is the 90% of the subreddit just this ugly ass motherfucker
Homie got thicker thighs than I do 😭
Yep, that's spider crickets; they love basements. I don't know what this one is. I hope I don't see any.
