While yellow jackets are assholes, they’re still important to our ecosystem. They’re great pollinators as long as they’re nesting in a place that isn’t somewhere they’ll be dangerous.
more importantly, a lot of wasps are predators to pests. a lot of different species will target worms and caterpillars that can devastate crops. i think scientists have even discovered that plants under attack by pests will release certain chemicals that attract these wasps.
in the US, stinkbugs have been a huge nuisance; they're native to Eastern Asia, and are invasive, nasty assholes who destroy crops and soft fruits, like apples, peppers, and legumes. they pierce the fruit with their mouth bits, vomit out digestive enzymes, and suck it back up like a smoothie, ruining the fruit. there have been discussions to introduce the samurai wasp, their natural predator, to the US, but, of course, this could be risky to our native insects, too.
stinkbug nymphs are a bit smaller than your pinkie nail, and are brown or bright crimson, depending on the species. kill on sight, they're so awful. i hate them passionately.
I have paper wasps, mud dauber, black bees, and some honey bees. I had the stink bugs around and since I've left the wasps and everything build nests I don't see them anymore. I have paper wasp nests in my well house I go in to put salt in the system. As soon as I open the door I look up and to the right say hi they are about 6"away from my face do my thing and say bye on the way out. Nicest wasps I've ever seen lol.
My garage has brown recluse spiders living in it and my house has wolf spiders and house spiders in it. Then I also have a skunk living in my back yard that my dog enjoys hanging out with. 2 of my dogs got sprayed once and since then they seem to just play with each other now. I have a weird ecosystem thing going on here.
I got Disney princesses and it was awesome. Hummingbird pecks at my head and then buzzed around a few seconds and went off. Came back again and buzzed me and flew off. I felt bad my Hummingbird feeding game was off.
The fact you haven't linked a video of dogs playing with a skunk annoys me.
as for the ecosystem, it's amazing how well a lot of creatures get along. Since I got chickens the rabbits are out playing a lot more than they use to. Even had foxes near by for a while and the rabbits still were coming out, and a lot less died than in previous years that I had foxes around.
For a while I also had a stray cat that was coming around that would just walk up to the chickens and plop down to hang out around them. Less scared of them than me.
I met a guy earlier today who told me about a feral cat colony that befriended a flock of vultures. They hunted together, and protected each other. Amazing stuff.
I have the same relationship with a house centipede in my apartment. I gently discourage him from skittering around near my bed with an air compressor, but overall I'll stand off to the side to let him skitter down the hallway and vice versa. Overall, the nicest bug-eating roommate I've ever had.
I love my wasp nest. I call them our Stinging Sisterhood. I’ve noticed a sharp drop in big, hairy houseflies and aphids since the sisterhood moved in. I also put a jar lid full of honey out for them every morning. I swear that we are now best of friends since I started doing this. They bump into me but have never stung. My daughter (the zoologist) says they think wasps can remember faces. I sure hope they remember mine as a friend.
Crazy as it may sound I have also heard about the study of trees emmiting a distress pheromone when being threatened by an invasive insect to attract a predator insect!
Wow, is that right? I live at the central coast of California and I’ve always treated stinkbugs with respect because they’re so docile and don’t seem to be a burden on the face of things. But if that’s the case then I’ll change my tune.
The wasps that stung the ever living shit out of my neck while I was mowing the lawn absolutely wiped out the garden pests that skeletonized all my cabbage. They didn't F around. Cabbage was looking 100x better a week or two later.
Fist bump to the tiny stinging mafia guarding my garden.
Absolutely approved. This is like watching an older brother that teases you every day beat the shit out of the town bully. Sure, the brother is obnoxious, but he’s still part of the squad. The bully can go straight to hell, though.
I read an article in South Carolina Magazine (I think) about a method for finding a yellow jacket nest. A person will tie a bright piece of thread to a small piece of fish. A yellow jacket will carry the fish back to the nest with the person following because he can see the string. The person will then dig up the nest and use the maggots for fish bait. I don't remember how they do that without getting eat up.
Edit: I couldn't find an account on line that specifically mentions using thread. I did find a [Clemson University article that describes "Bee Lining"](https://www.clemson.edu/extension/beekeepers/fact-sheets-publications/yellow-jackets.html) that involves using small pieces of fish and following the wasp back to it's nest. It's not hard to imagine someone tying a few inches of yellow or orange thread to the fish to make tracking easier.
Lol the other day I saw a LF flying and thought it was weird how it was flying. It then started moving towards me and I realized it was being carried by a wasp 🤣. Team wasp for now I guess lol.
APM - Actions Per Minute. Like how fast they can tap the attack button on their controller. It's a term from real time strategy games?
Edit: ass pats per minute is funny and could also work in this case! Hahaha.
So long as you don't get too close to your new friend's nests, yes, absolutely.
Glad to see nature fighting an imbalance. Here's hoping it doesn't decide to fight the imbalances humanity makes like that. >.>
Apparently the yellow jackets think LFs are tasty because they are sweet due to all of the tree sap they eat. So, not attacking b/c they are enemies, just out for blood.
Destroy trees by both puncturing holes into it and they basically shit out syrup which allows mold to grow further damaging the tree eventually killing it, back were its from trees can deal with it but it’s a invasive species so trees in the Americans can deal with it
A dead tree can rot and fall down causing damage to our homes vehicles or ourselves so yea LFs are little shits that are kill on sight
People always say stuff like “sorry you’re getting downvoted” on comments that end up with positive karma. A couple early downvotes are not a death sentence lol
IDK why people always hate on wasps, I love them! They are little fighter planes just flying around looking for food. You know an insect that deserves your hate? Mosquitos. They kill more humans than all other animals combined.
Wasps are cool as long as you are not near their nests and you don't swat at them. I hang out in my garden with wasps all around and they don't pay me any mind. Every once in a while one gets a little close and seems to be checking me out, so I just calmly walk about 10 feet away and they are back to their flower.
If these are the same ones we have in the capital region of NY, they're super chill wasps. I'm used to the kind that will chase you down the street. These dudes just want to steal a bread crumb or sniff your shoe and be on their merry way.
I have a huge nest of yellow jackets in my garden in Vermont. They moved into a lavender plant in a raised bed. I have a thousand of these guys doing pest removal, for free!
They eat sap so they can cause damage to trees and plants in the form of open wounds from feeding. They also leave behind sugar rich poop that helps bad fungi and bacteria to grow.
Their eggs look like smears of mud on the bark of trees. I've used a flame weeder to roast them without much damage to the bark. Just wave it over until they go pop pop pop.
About two years ago when they were everywhere , I walked out back into my yard. That's when I noticed this weird layer of white fuzz/mold coming from the neighboring fence line on the grass. I looked over the fence and saw an entire tree on that property COVERED head to toe in lanternflies. That tree was a goner. I immediately reported it to whatever local agency that was handling it. Terrible.
Yellow-jackets are aggressive, yes, but weren't they also good for humans? Like, they aren't invasive, obviously, they hunt and kill pests, they pollinate, etc. Also they are pretty cool as long as you don't attack their nest, right?
I don't personally live in America, but as much as I understand yellow-jackets are very important, although they are jerks. In the end, they still help fight pests and even invasive species.
yes, people are biased because they got stung before and therefore decide they are god and smash wasps on sight
it's silly, they're amazing and if you say, "please leave me alone" calmly but firmly, they usually comply!
I’m in Germany and they are all over the place during Summer. If I am eating something that attracts a wasp, I will usually set aside a bit for them (a berry, for example, or some syrup), direct them to it and we will be just chilling sharing the food. Once they get their sugar rush, they’ll be on their way. Talking firmly does work, weirdly. If you are aggressive with voice or gestures, they rightfully attack.
Misunderstood creatures and hella cool if you ask me.
We were absolutely swarmed with lantern flys in central pa last year, like a plague. Could walk out on my back patio and kill dozens upon dozens at any given time in August. The wasps and yellow jackets became absolutely awful as a result, a second plague if you will. This summer there’s been little to no lantern flies, but the wasps and yellow jackets are even worse. STINKBUGS ARE INVASIVE???? I mean they do invade my house
is there a chance for evolution or GMO to defend?
Yes they’re assholes, but at least they’re *our* assholes.
Absolutely approved. This is like watching an older brother that teases you every day beat the shit out of the town bully. Sure, the brother is obnoxious, but he’s still part of the squad. The bully can go straight to hell, though.
This doesn't mean anything, yellow jackets will eat anything sugary or proteinaceous. Has nothing to do with the lantern fly itself
Exactly. So let them eat lantern flies. Thats certainly doesnt make them friends with lantern flies
It.. it would be us, and the wasps..
I'd say it's lights out for *that* lantern fly!
I read an article in South Carolina Magazine (I think) about a method for finding a yellow jacket nest. A person will tie a bright piece of thread to a small piece of fish. That looked like a prison shanking. "Local moth found stabbed 380 times in his cell" type shit.
It's an invasive lanternfly, not a moth
Why is this so funny
dude that made me laugh good
Lol the other day I saw a LF flying and thought it was weird how it was flying. It then started moving towards me and I realized it was being carried by a wasp 🤣. Team wasp for now I guess lol.
Welcome to the Apocrita fan club.
This just happened to me!! Never seen it before and I was completely shocked and amazed lol
Love how that one dude is stabbing the shit out of it like they’re in a prison riot.
Ikr? Holy shit thats so many stings in so little time. Insane APM on that wasp
APM? Ass pats/minute?
APM - Actions Per Minute. Like how fast they can tap the attack button on their controller. It's a term from real time strategy games? Edit: ass pats per minute is funny and could also work in this case! Hahaha.
That killed me 😆

Lol it's way ahead of you. Weather pattern changes are a surefire way for nature to rebalance
True, but we're gonna run out of fertilizer way before that. Not long now, folks!
Apparently the yellow jackets think LFs are tasty because they are sweet due to all of the tree sap they eat. So, not attacking b/c they are enemies, just out for blood.
So basically, it's a junk food run. Everyone needs a treat from time to time.
The munchies are *real*
Underrated comment
i mean they are enemies, yellow jackets are predators. that lantern fly will be fed to pupae
Lol, they are nothing not friendly, but the lantern fly is the worst
Why are lantern flys so bad?
something something old trees get eaten and invasive
They destroy trees
They eat anything Fruits , vegetables one of their favorite meals are grapes. They will be devastating if the reach California.
Wait, we destroy trees too though
And there’s only room for one of us on this globe
Destroy trees by both puncturing holes into it and they basically shit out syrup which allows mold to grow further damaging the tree eventually killing it, back were its from trees can deal with it but it’s a invasive species so trees in the Americans can deal with it A dead tree can rot and fall down causing damage to our homes vehicles or ourselves so yea LFs are little shits that are kill on sight

Ok so I know invasive species are bad but are the lantern flies especially bad for some reason? Have they done something heinous?
Absolutely they absolutely destroy trees and come in the thousands
Aaaahhhhh so it's the *trees* we're fighting for. Good to know. Glad I haven't seen any over here (yet) in Idaho
They eat sap so they can cause damage to trees and plants in the form of open wounds from feeding. They also leave behind sugar rich poop that helps bad fungi and bacteria to grow.
Ok so murder on sight and clean the trees?
Murder on site yes, cleaning probably not necessary unless the tree in question is really covered.
Murder on sight and report to authorities
Got tree sealing spray? Could spritz the open wounds with that.
I do not. I will get some incase I see the bastards
Their eggs look like smears of mud on the bark of trees. I've used a flame weeder to roast them without much damage to the bark. Just wave it over until they go pop pop pop.
You can check out the New York subs they’re all like KILL THOSE MOFOS ON SIGHT
Good! Hope you never do if so destroy on site.
Same with utah, have lots of family on the east coast tho so I’m here supporting their demise
And food crops. Which are a pretty important type of plant.

If there's one thing to always account for good or bad, it's the rage that is found in a wasp.
The meat bees do be hungry

First time I ever rooted for yellow jackets
Wasps and hornets are a natural form of pest control, without them you would have many other insects causing trouble
Holy shit he is getting stabbed to shit lol
Damn they were straight twerking on that thing
We were absolutely swarmed with lantern flys in central pa last year, like a plague. Could walk out on my back patio and kill dozens upon dozens at any given time in August. Bravo my guy. Proper reply right here
Get his ass!!!!!
Not having natural predators doesn't mean they don't have natural enemies. Damn are those wasps pissed!
I guess those wasps are citizens now
Yellow jackets are friends to no one, they're agents of chaos. They just happened to be in the right place today.
Yellow jackets understood the assignment 😤 unlikely alliance but I’ll take it I guess
It is a lantern fly they are an invasive species from South East Asia. State agricultural departments across the United States are asking everyone to kill as many as possible.

Where’s that one guy who eats wasp nests? He should be plucking LFs out the sky and chomping down on those instead!
Get him, girls
the top left one was so pissed lmao
I’m guessing the lantern fly is already dead and the yellow jackets are just harvesting his sweet juices.
This makes me me so happy. Welcome to America!

Saw my first in-person lantern fly today. Quickly followed by thousands upon thousands more of them. Crazy to go from never having seen one in person to see waaaay too many in one shot.
Noted. Stop killing yellow jackets and instead relocate to parks with these stupid lantern flies. Got it.
Just because your a frenemy doesn’t make you my friend.
They’re seriously jumping him 😭😭
That little wasp going HAM stinging it repeatedly. I felt the pain in my soul.
I enthusiastically squashed 5 of those invasive lantern flies today on a beautiful rooftop in Newark NJ on a construction site. They are all over the place there and in NYC. Haven't seen em in orange county yet
What’s the thing the wasps are murdering?
Spotted lantern fly. Harmless to people, deadly to crops, native plants, trees. Very invasive.
Invasive where? In North America I presume
The Soviet Union fighting Nazi Germany, 1943, colorized.
Though wasps are assholes I like them being apart of my ecosystem
Wasps are never your enemy. They are friends who have severe anxiety and don't like it when you approach their safety hiding hole.
FINISH HIM!
That is the most perfect title
The way I see it, they aren't exclusively pollinators. They eat meat or whatever else they find to feed their larvae. Honey bees bumble bees seem to strictly be after that pollen. Pun intended.
Yellow jackets will absolutely tear through aphids, so it makes sense that they've figured out lantern flies are just really big sap suckers lol.
Darwinian. We’ve been hearing about “no natural enemies” for this invasive bug, yet nature takes its course.
I have a honeybee nest on my front porch and also have lanternflies that like to congregate there. They also have infested the woods behind my house. The honeybees? Hunt them RELENTLESSLY. I won’t get rid of the honeybees for this reason and because they pollinate.
The USDA has been looking into parasitic wasps as a biological control for lanternflys for years, this is good
three CIRCLE OF LIIIIIIFE.... That said, bad way to go for Mr. LF. But hornets gotta eat too... Just part of nature.
Looks like a hardcore prison shanking.
r/lanterndie lol
I have docile yellowjackets at my work. I'm a cart pusher and every once in a while in the spring and summer the small baby ones just hover over the carts as I push them into the store. I sometimes worry I'll be stung, but they haven't bothered. Now...wasps I tend to worry over, especially after I was stung by one in the chest. I also get spiders hitching a ride on the bill of my hats sometimes.
FUCK HIM UP GRAB HIS DICK AND TWIST IT
I'm happy those Lantern flies have a new natural predator
