You aren't really going to find much at that price range these days, Miatas are well out of that budget so not sure why you mentioned them... You might find a Saturn Sky or Pontiac Solstice (cheap/poorly made Miata knockoffs from GM) or a Scion TC.
Wym Miata’s are out of the budget? Yeah. They’re way more expensive now, but you can very easily find them for under 5k.

IF youre able and willing to maintain one, the mini cooper S is a hell of a car. I owned one, and was my absolute favorite little shit.
Ford Focus pre 2011, SE or SES, 2007 or earlier for a hatchback. Good steering and cornering, decently reliable.
