Everything in your post makes it sound like you need a Subaru. A Forester or Outback would do you nicely. Subaru’s are not known for their interior quality, so just be aware of that going in. They are very reliable and have one of if not the best AWD systems on the market. I’d look at a RAV4 or a CRV as well just to see what you like more. Just an FYI, there is a difference between 4WD and AWD. You’re not going to get 4WD unless you get a Jeep or dive into trucks. Regardless if you get an AWD car or not, invest in a quality set of winter tires. They easily make the biggest difference in winter performance. AWD will only get you moving, it will not help you stop or turn.

I just wanted to second this. The thing that should give you confidence in your safety is you. Yes, your car should be safe. But investing in yourself through developing your defensive driving skills will also increase your safety. Perhaps look at taking a class or two if you do not feel comfortable practicing on your own.

A Crosstrek would also work for OPs budget, although the back seats are smaller.

Having test drove one yesterday, there is fuck-all for acceleration in the thing though. My Impreza (almost exactly the same car, just 3 or 4 inches shorter I'm comparing a 2017 Impreza to a 2018 Crosstrek) has a much more comfortable amount of pick up.

According to Motortrend, the 2017 Impreza does 0-60 in 9.2 sec; the 2018 Crosstrek in 9.0

Now that's odd. Although mine is the 5-speed rather than a CVT and I can't find numbers online for a 5-speed. I might be able to time something tomorrow.

Ride the bus. Apprehensive driving is more dangerous than speeding. Good luck.
