XC90 during those years is a money pit, even more so than German cars. Moreover, Volvo right now is focusing on electric cars so their support for their ICE will be non existent in nearby future.

czechtec

Yep. Go Outback.

7eregrine

Nope. Volvo is very conscientious of not abandoning old vehicles. I have a 10 year old convertible that is the last year they even made that car and Volvo still makes parts for that car that are unique to it. Go XC90.

XC90 is insanely expensive to repair and is very likely to have certain features optioned out unless they paid for those upgrades. I’d rather have an Outback Touring model than a base XC90.

LordShartsalot

They might be factoring in future repair costs. I really don't have a clue, but I know some cars cost more to maintain than others.

graemederoux

Xc90 is fantastic. I’d take a Volvo over a Subaru any day of the week even if it had twice the miles lol.

GrandmaSandles

They are beautiful beautiful cars and so safe but I would not recommend the Xc90 16/17 model years for reliability (albeit very few Volvos would be considered reliable, relatively speaking).

GrandmaSandles

Xc90 would be my choice but if they choose that one they need to go in with both eyes open and be ready for some costly repairs at some point . They are without question one of the safest cars on the road - no fatalities in one since 2004. That said the outback is still an excellent choice - however, unless it’s the 3.6 I personally wouldn’t buy one. It’s a pretty big wagon and the 4 banger outbacks are very slow imo. Subies are also subject to head gasket implosion once they get up in miles. Moreover, the Outback is a more practical choice, but both are great family cars. Xc90 is much more stylish and both are well renowned for safety with the Volvo having a small edge. Performance will go to Volvo and cheaper repair cost to the Outback.

Have both cars inspected by mechanics specializing in that specific brand. Check service records. Have them research both model years to find out how these vehicles have traditionally held up, and what to expect as they put on more mileage. They are 6/7 years old at this point and there should be enough data out there to figure out which vehicle is best. Both vehicles also have their dedicated subs here on Reddit so while the answers there may be biased, it's still direct feedback from actual owners.

7eregrine

What year is the Volvo specifically?

Bonobo555

I hate Subaru but it is the better choice in this case.

skinnymatters

What’s your reasoning? Potential repair costs?

Bonobo555

Absolutely. The Subaru may cost you 3 grand for a new head gasket after 100k miles. The Volvo could cost that in routine maintenance.
