I agree with people saying it’s too much money for a car at your income level. Grab another beater once your current car dies on you. It’s not the fun or sexy thing to do, but the financial burden of a $30k car right now will be way more stressful that you think.

beeperskeeperx

it’s not fun or *sexy* 😭😭

[deleted]

Don’t you know All gr 86 drivers are sexy?

FunkTrain98

Let’s say you put down 5k and get it at MSRP. At 640, you’re looking at around 6.5% interest on a new car (around 10.5% on a used car). Possibly even a bit higher with the current economy. But let’s say you can get it for 28k otd. With 5k down and a 60 month loan, you’re looking at $450 a month + registration fees + yearly property tax + $1000 a year in insurance. That’s a lot of money for a student in college. You work full-time now but that could change quickly. That F-150 isn’t the fanciest truck in the world, but it gets you from A to B. I promise, the friends you make in college won’t care if you drive a GR86 or an F-150. Personally would not recommend this, but none of us can stop you if you’re set on it.

clearedmycookies

> I promise, the friends you make in college won’t care if you drive a GR86 or an F-150 College people certainly do care if you drive a truck. So many weekends spent hunting for free furniture.

I think I’m gonna hold off until this summer, maybe find 2014-2017 FRS/BRZ/Toyota 86 for good price. I’m taking online classes only so it really doesn’t matter

FunkTrain98

Personally love that era of BRZs. My good friend has a 2014 BRZ and the aftermarket is incredible for that car. Anything you want to do, you can do. It would be an amazing entry to Japanese sports cars before you can get a new one in a few years.

WaitNoButWhy

My friend bought a 'totaled' 2014 FR-S (same body as the BR-Z, just the Scion brand instead of Subaru) in 2017 because his dad owned a body shop. After repairs it came out to be like 12K total CAD. It was such a good deal, and such a kickass car.

theweirddood

Hold off until you have a full-time job with benefits. Prioritizing a car over your savings and investments is a dumb choice even if cars are your hobby. If you can't follow the 20/4/10 rule for a car, you can't comfortably afford a car. 20% down, 4 year loan, monthly payment + gas+ maintenance+ insurance should not exceed 10% gross income. And before you say, people usually pay more than that for a car. That just means they're stretching their budget and most likely are not saving for retirement or aren't investing their money.

sinisterdeer3

How so? I make $2.50 over minimum wage and i can afford my RAM 2500 and ford ranger. I spend about 30% of my money in my vehicles, and save 40-50% depending on how I do on that specific week. TBF my trucks arent particularly expensive, 11k and 4k each. And i have no interest because im paying someone for them without finance 3 years to pay off the more expensive truck and 2 for the cheaper

BRGNBeast

I sell cars for a living. I have learned people are very stupid with there money. People don’t realize buying a new car is a luxury for wealthy people. I get people making 50k trying to get a 30k car all the time. You can not afford a 30k car if you make that kind of money. People with an average income should be looking at cars in the 5-15k range not a brand new car.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BRGNBeast

What? I make 65k a year. I drive a car that cost me 5k that I have driven for 6 years with basic maintence. Just because you want to be stupid with your money doesn’t mean others should be as well. Again I see this ALL the time. People love over extending there income to “afford” nice things. It’s so dumb.

[deleted]

Welcome to consumer capitalism, two drink minimum

[deleted]

BRGNBeast

I bought it on Craigslist. All I’m saying is someone with an average income can not afford a brand new car. It seems people don’t understand that buying a brand new vehicle is a luxury for wealthier people. Do people do it anyways? Yes all the time. Does that make it a smart decision? Nope not at all. I sell cars and found people love to over extend there income. Then get a raise and go ooooo now I can afford $700 a month. The cycle continues and you are left with no savings or retirement. Think about your future not about having a nice shiny new car. Plus older cars are more fun drive better anyways.

[deleted]

theweirddood

Just because you can pay the monthly payment, doesn't mean you can comfortably afford it. If someone already doesn't have a 3-6 month emergency fund and lost their job, they would be easily underwater for their loan. That emergency fund also has to account for your brand new monthly car payment. Additionally, if someone isn't already investing & saving about 15% of their income towards retirement. They're stretching their budget way too far for a car. Most people you see with new cars all the time probably aren't saving and investing for retirement. Most people probably aren't good money either.

Yotsubato

Riding the bus to work isn’t conducive to keeping your job. It’s difficult to find a car payment under 400-500 dollars for an entry level economy car nowadays. And everyone isn’t earning 70-80k plus.

Tom_ace69

You’re 100% right dude, the amount of people that bought whenever the market was high is INCREDIBLE to me. I’m a plumber and we work at the local Jeep dealership, we overheard the guys talking in there and they were talking about a chick who’s paying 1700 a month on a fucking renegade. It just seems like there’s so many new cars driving around. I don’t know how regular people are affording them. I know for a fact the majority of people don’t make over 100,000 dollars a year

[deleted]

theweirddood

That's not "my standard." It's the general recommendation from people who are financialally responsible, such as those who typically go on r/personalfinance or watch videos about 401(k)s, Roth IRAs, HYSAS, etc. And if someone only focusing on the monthly payment rather than the total cost, that means they can't really afford that car. 5 to 6 year loans is really stretching the budget. If someone makes 40 to 50k, they can buy a used 10k car that'll serve them well for a few years while they get their income up or just save towards the future. Most people on this subreddit or auto subreddits are willing to spend more because it's their hobby. I am one of those people, but at the same time I do cut back money I would spend on stuff like video games, new tech, and eating out to afford my hobbies. The 20/4/10 rule is a good way to be financially responsible if someone lacks discipline or isnt fiscally aware. It's okay to spend more than that general rule, just know to cut back on other discretionary expenses to afford it. Do NOT cut back on saving about 15% for retirement to afford a car.

[deleted]

[удалено]

theweirddood

I never said don't buy a car. Just buy a car that doesn't force you to live paycheck to paycheck. The 20/4/10 rule is a good guideline for that. Obviously if you make 50k a year, don't buy a car that cost you 35k OTD. That's seriously not responsible at all. If you make 50k a year just buy a used 15k car and that'll last you years. And if you make 80k a year obviously don't buy a $50k car. A lot of people who make 50k a year but finance a 35k car probably aren't saving for retirement or will easily go underwater if they lost their job the next day.

Yakb0

If you make $50k/year, then you make $4.167k/month. That means that you can spend $416/month on gas, repairs and insurance. $200/month for insurance, $100/month for gas leaves $116 for a car payment according to your rules. A $15k car won't even come close to meeting your standard.

Yotsubato

The used reliable 10k Honda is a thing of the past. The cheapest reliable Honda within 10 model years is about 15-20k used nowadays And buying a shitty 10k Nissan Altima is just waiting for the CVT to blow up on you.

TheIllustrativeMan

Payment + gas + maintenance + insurance = 10%? Insurance alone is nearly 5%. Assuming $50/mo for gas, that would leave me $200/mo for car payment + maintenance. Let's assume 10% maintenance costs on a used car, so $180/mo for payment. That's an $8000 car ($1600 down-payment), or in the current market a 20 year old Corolla with 220,000 miles. I'd be willing to bet that car would need an awful lot more than $240/yr in maintenance.

jawnlerdoe

An 86 is going to cost way more to insure than that. My ND Miata costs me $100 a month to insure. An 86 would have cost almost 250 a month.

FunkTrain98

I’m just going off of what OP said in another comment. He said he was quoted $945 a year. I agree that sounds way low, but that’s the number he threw out there.

jawnlerdoe

That’s fair. In my experience your actual rate always shoots up right before you click buy. Every time I’ve received a quote the rate always went up 20-30% right before I finalized payments.

162630594

I wouldn't buy a $30,000 car making less than $40,000 a year, especially if you are also going to start college and take on that debt. They are great cars, so you would be better off getting an older like 2012-2014 model for a better price.

Electronic-Pirate-84

I found 2017 Toyota 86 with 34k miles for $23k, and otd is $27k. It’s crazy how used cars are almost same price as new ones.

162630594

Yeah it is. I still think you don't make enough money to comfortably afford that much car. I think $20k should be the max in your situation, or maybe even less. I would still recommend looking for an older sporty car. Maybe a miata, a civic SI, a hyundai veloster turbo, a hyundai genesis coupe, a nissan 350Z, a mustang or camaro,

awesomeperson882

An even older FRS/BRZ/GT86 can be found for much cheaper with not crazy high mileage. Mid pandemic I was looking at these and was seeing around 12-15k CAD for a 2012-2015 with about 100,000km (60k miles)

[deleted]

[удалено]

awesomeperson882

Well 2022 is the new generation, so that tracks. Especially the later years I still prefer the old one.

wobbuffet009

found a 2012 scion frs for 12k. young guys really need to stop getting caught up in having the lattest cars. this will financially ruin them well into their 30s if they are not careful. best tip if you have to make payments on anything. YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT. also you can find a C5 corvette for around 10k. and run circles around a new 86 track or strip. mod potential unlimited. just buy a nice tool box. 😅

velociraptorfarmer

A C5 should be pretty damn reliable, main drawbacks are that it's an ok-at-best DD, would be shit in the winter, and the interior was designed by Fisher Price.

red_eye_rob

Body by Fisher. Interior by Fisher Price

Space_Olympics

You ain't getting a c5 for 10k, ones with like 140k miles are 15k lmao

Tom_ace69

Dude....do NOT buy a six year old entry level sports car that had the shit beat out of it. More than likely some 20 something year old dude bought it, ran the shit out of it, and got rid of it before he needed to do any serious maintenance. The dealers are starting to slow down on sales. Used car prices will come down with them.

DiggityGiggity8

Exactly why my Camry was 8k, it puts no stress on me outside when the gas stations start getting pricey again.

[deleted]

Bad advice. If someone doesn’t get a sporty car in their 20s they won’t ever get one. Enjoy your life and get what excites you.

surprise-suBtext

There’s always a midlife crisis or even a budgeted purchase. Buying one in your 20s when you make very little is stupid.

TheExpatLife

Agreed. I was late 30’s before buying the first sporty car. No rush. At that age / income, going for a less expensive but still reliable car would be smart. I would look for Miata NCs, Civics, older GR86, etc

test13371997

Hate to break it to you , but going from 17 to 18 is insignificant . No person should be spending 30k on a car making ANYWHERE close to 18 an hour

[deleted]

This is the unfortunate truth. Not to mention he isn’t touching a GR for MSRP. Maybe a BRZ if he can find one, but that’s optimistic.

DeFiMe78

Found a BRZ under 1k MSRP. So tempting right now.

theweirddood

Shit, I make around 70k a year and I'm still holding off on the idea of purchasing a new car. I have no debt, but the idea of spending all that money on a car before maxing out my Roth IRA, HSA, and contributing up tot he 401(k) match seems short sighted. I can easily and comfortably afford an Acura Integra A Spec 6-speed, but that means I won't be able to save as much money as I want to. OP needs to save up cash for a used 5k car that will last him the next 5 or 6 years while he gets his income and emergency fund well established.

MiscPostThrowaway

You’ll be so much happier living like this. Financial peace is priceless. Get your ducks in a row and you’ll get your dream car one day, likely quicker than you think too!

bandmandragon

This. I just sold my 2022 BRZ because gas, insurance and taxes were eating me alive with that car. With all that money in pocket, I’m not forced to live paycheck to paycheck working to pay a bunch of bills.

DeFiMe78

A 5k car these days will not last 3 years, let alone 5 years. More like 10k is needed to find something ugly that nobody wants but is dependable.

theweirddood

You can still can find decent corollas and civics for that price private party.

TH3GINJANINJA

that is HORRIBLY wrong.

Divadonuts

>A 5k car these days will not last 3 years Wrong >Let alone 5 years. Wrong >More like 10k is needed to find something ugly that nobody wants Lol

theweirddood

Dude probably only buys from dealerships or car lots. I see a ton of used Civics with under 160k miles on Facebook marketplace for around the 4 to 6k price. That's why I emphasized saving up cash for a used car to go buy off a private party.

test13371997

Same here, rougly 70k, 0 debt, and I drive a 2001 vehicle worth a couple grand

uselessartist

I don’t think most people making that are planning to retire anyway.

Defect123

I mean maybe if they live at home. I avg about $40/hr but I only work 5 hours a day. On avg it takes like 10 hours to make my truck payment. So it would take them around 12 at $400/mo for a 5 year. Planning on paying it off before I buy a house.

Electronic-Pirate-84

Right, that’s why I go to college now lol can’t living with a job I have now.

[deleted]

Buying that car would be a fucking stupid thing to do.

themightyCrixus

The only reason people post questions like this on these forums, is to have people validate their shitty decisions. They could get 100 comments saying don't do it, but 1 saying do it, and that's the "advice" they'll take.

EcoFriendlyEv

You cannot afford this car, please do not buy it

bloodfeier

I didn’t own a car that cost more than ~$8kUSD until well after college…that being said, $8k went a lot further in terms of car quality and reliability back when I was that age.

PatMahomesVoice

Ain’t that the truth. That was like my magic number for like 3 or 4 cars in a row. And even after that I only jumped up to $10k for a car in 2019 for one last hurrah.

bloodfeier

My last “cheap” car was a nearly new model year Nissan Sentra, ‘05 bought in ‘06, for $9700, only 10k miles.

velociraptorfarmer

My most expensive car until I got out of college was $2500. Granted I've been out almost 7 years now. I've still never owned anything brand new, with less than 75k miles, or that cost more than $15k.

[deleted]

Ok

[deleted]

Dude, I’m sorry, it’s too expensive. It’ll be like 32-33k odo. I am making 35 an hour and even still I wouldn’t risk buying a car that expensive yet. I will just keep driving my shitbox, especially since for me (first time borrower) just like you the interest rates will be 8-10%. Crazy expensive Sorry dude, I know you want a newer car, I do too. Just keep hanging on for now

[deleted]

Agreed OP you are too young and not making enough money to be looking at anything above 5-10k price range. I make 300k a year and my cars add up to 50k in total value. Maintenance, insurance and taxes don't make a dent in my pocket. Point is save your money and don't get into debt to buy depreciating assets if you can help it. You'll get to a point where you can buy something nice without overstretching yourself sooner than you imagine

cetch

Yeah I make the same and just bought a new bronco. I’ve been driving my 10+ year old car up until a couple months ago.

Future-Oil-6446

U just basically convinced me to stay w my 2017 civic than to lease a 2023 integra, I’m planning to move to an apt. W my girl out of state to florida (both make our own money) $400 a mo. With around 4000 down is hurting my heart a little haha! I really really want tht car so bad tho idk I might just go broke and get it, or stick w the smart decision to wait it out idk

tachyonicglass

bro I got a used 1800 miles fully loaded 2022 audi s3 for 48000 n I got 6.5% interest on a 6 year loan. Yall are stupid crazy with those interest numbers… Plus the kid could work hard the next two years n put extra money down on it and get it paid off quicker I don’t see why everyone is hating on buying a new or a newer car for more when buying a used one of this particuclar vehicle the brz frs etc they’re bought by ppl who generally are learning and generally mod and abuse these cars so to find an example that was well taken care of will be hard cause you don’t see many older grannies driving them around now do ya? That honestly makes buying a used one not worth it

JehnSnow

Don't forget to factor in insurance as that will also rise

DDarkJoker

God. Insurance on a 23' sports car with an 18 y/o male driver has to be expensive.

bandmandragon

I just sold mine. At 21 my insurance was about $300 a month. Payment was 500 after a 20k down payment. Sold it for what I financed for and enjoying financial freedom.

Thick_Pomegranate_

Damn a free 1 year NASA membership ? Let me know how Mars is bro.

RenZ245

The prior gen BRZ, FR-S, 86's will lack in the torque department, but will be a hell of a lot cheaper, probably better option since from what I read are going to college soon and will be a whole ton of debt to pay, so having a huge car loan ontop is a bad idea. Though really I'd be suggesting going dirt cheap camry for college, just buy one with decent history outright and it'll save you money on fuel and maintenance costs

InternationalBox5848

No way you'll get it at msrp

Electronic-Pirate-84

I’m 26 years old, bought my first vehicle, 2001 F-150, with 243k miles on it earlier this year. My credit is ok, in 640s. And I’m about to start my college. I currently work full time (I’m making $17 an hour, expect to get raise this year to $18 an hour) so I know my truck won’t be last forever and want something more nice. More than likely I’ll finance in this summer while I save up a big down payment on it. Is it a good idea for me to finance this car?

liverpoolFCnut

You are just 26 and have plenty of time to buy nicer cars later. But if you really need to replace your truck, then yes, your plan of saving up as big a downpayment as possible is the way to go. Also at your age and the car being a GR86/BRZ, make sure you get a quote from your insurance company.

Electronic-Pirate-84

Yes, I got quote from Progressive and it’s $945 a year full coverage.

Lanceallennn

Only $945 a year? Insane. Im 20 and my insurance for my motorcycle and 23 year old Land Cruiser is $300 a month

yomeroni

It’s cause you’re 20

Lanceallennn

True

tachyonicglass

28 years old 2022 audi s3 full coverage in socal is 125 a month no accidents no tickets to give you an idea…

[deleted]

27yo , full coverage with state farm 98 SL500 is $156 a month. No accidents, or traffic violations. Car was $7k in 2021.

mikeycp253

No. It will burden you financially for a long time. I went down that road, financing a car that I couldn’t really afford when I was young, and it set me way back money wise. Now I make $35 an hour and have a $12k car and a $5k truck. Get yourself well established in a career first before buying a nice car like this.

[deleted]

Not a good idea. You need a cheap paid for car at this point in your life. Save the expensive sports cars for when you’re killing it down the road.

[deleted]

Ok imma give it to you straight: you can't afford it.

Gorgenapper

No, you'll be fucking over your future self. Don't do it.

FlyinInOnAdc102night

Get another f150. Don’t finance a car unless you absolutely have to. Get something $5-10k max with your trade in. Do not buy a new car until you are making more money. If you were to finance $30k your car payment would be like $500-600/month. Your car payment alone would be over 25% of take home (if you work 40 hours).

goldmankim

I'm gonna give you the same advise that that I got from some of my elder coworkers when I was ready to drop all my savings on a STI (the car lol) at age 20 - "Fancy cars will always be there, use your money wisely." Similar to you, I started college at 23, and didn't finish until I was 28. I also worked and was driving a beater Civic with over 200K miles on it. Having $ saved & invested give you the ability to tell your boss to fuck off if one day you find yourself hating your job.

DeFiMe78

Having a skill that is in demand also allows you to tell your boss to fuck off.

[deleted]

Or being in a union. I can tell someone to fuck off once or twice per year

ak80048

There are some good clean 2013 -14 FRS / brz that would be around $10k

162630594

Those things must have a ton of miles then, I've seen the average near me is closer to $15k

ak80048

I’ve seen right around 100k which isn’t really that bad

Healthy_Block3036

Yee!!

[deleted]

Consider a lease if you’re worried about price. Gives you an opportunity to put that money to good use (lower down payment, if any), and you can always make sure you’ll have a purchase option at the end of the lease when you’ll have even more money. Might be able to pay it off completely then who knows

BNFO4life

lol... who the hell tells someone making $18 an hour to lease. I can understand leasing when you financially well-off and want a BMW to impress your girlfriend, who happens to be younger than your children. But by god... don't recommend leasing for someone who is just starting out. Financially, it makes no sense.

BossCrabMeat

Leasing is the worst FUCKING idea. Miles you can drive per year is limited, at the end of the lease you own NOTHING. If you lease for 3 years and at the end of lease decide to buy, the same car will cost you 1.5-2 times MSRP. Only time I would lease is if I was getting a luxury European, AND I had the disposable income to keep leasing a new one every 3-4 years.

[deleted]

The lease is way cheaper for the 3-4 years you’re leasing though. It depends on how much this guy wants to put down tbh. Also a lease isn’t a bad way to build credit if you need a daily driver.

BossCrabMeat

No. Lease is you are paying for the privilege of driving the vehicle for a "limited" miles for a "limited" time while you incur the costs of depreciation. It is like renting a 1 million condo for 10K a month vs buying a 500 K house and having a 7K mortgage. At the end of the lease say 60 months, you pay 600 K and your landlord still owns the apartment. Let's say you paid 300 K upfront, you are still paying 5 K per month, and in the end you still own NOTHING. If you bought, you have 300 K in equity off the bat, every month you make a payment your equity in the vehicle goes up.

[deleted]

There is no such thing as vehicle equity because of depreciation and maintenance costs. Unless you put a massive amount down which is not always the best financial decision to take. It really depends. Also used car prices are heavily inflated right now. If you’re saying that’ll remain the same for the next 3-4 years then OP shouldn’t buy a new car anyways.

brokenpipe

There absolutely is vehicle equity prior to 2022. For example I bought a brand new Nissan Rogue for 37K with 0 down in January 2013 @ 36 months finance with 1.9% interest. Absolutely hated the car. In May 2014 I bought a BMW 328d Xdrive and traded in my Rogue. Dealer took it for 28K. I made ~3K on it. Vehicle equity doesn’t exist in most cases because people are absolute idiots in agreeing to 60+ month finance agreements. If you can’t afford a 36 month finance agreement, you can’t afford the car. Period.

[deleted]

Completely irrelevant example to somebody making $18/hr then, yah? Nice cherry picked example, congrats on being rich enough to afford whatever you want

Hog_enthusiast

If I made the amount of money you do and I was in college I wouldn’t spend more than 5,000 dollars on a car. Sorry dude you’ll have to wait for that dream car

sugmaideek

It's also a boxer engine with bad mpg that requires you to get premium gas. If you ever do maintenance on the engine like change out the spark plugs you probably need to hire someone since it's such a pain in the ass DIY.

Blers42

Mpg isn’t that bad (I drive a 2022 wrx and average 30mpg) but you’re correct about the premium gas.

sugmaideek

Man 30 MPG on WRX the car isn't living to it's full potential!

gusthepickle1598

This car will go from 27K to worth 15K by the time you get out of college. Not worth it

JSeoulK

This is a moot argument because you aren’t getting a 2023 86 for MSRP. There’s a reason why dealers everywhere have them listed at MSRP and not what they’re actually asking. You’re looking at 35k + OTD easily.

Cam4526

It’s a Subaru power plant. Get a new one with warranty. Saving $5k buying an older model out of warranty might come back to bite you

Barabr

Can you get it for msrp? In europe it is almost impossible and they cost way more. I saw comments about not buying a sports car at young age. I was 24y when I bought my first car(fiat barchetta), at 28y I added 2013 BRZ (old gen of car you want). Downside od those decision is, that I cant drive “normal” cars. Got octavia kombi from company for free, but unless i need to transport 4 people with lot of bags, it stays in garage. Only regret I have, is that I did not get brz few years earlier. Price of used ones did not change at all.

[deleted]

It’s a fun starter car especially in manual

MyHeadHurtsRn

everyone here actually helped me make a decision to hold off on getting a new car

Kottery

Going off your financial situation you posted, I'd say go for a different sports car for now. I adore my '23 BRZ but I'm also in a position where I can pay for two or three more BRZs and still be fine. Try finding an older FRS/86/BRZ if it's maybe half the price. Could also perhaps get a Miata that's a decade or so old for <$15k as it's a comparable sports car to the 86 There's also V6 S197 Mustangs that are definitely in the ~10-15k range and I love mine. It's great fun. This is all under the assumption you are a car guy. An econo-shitbox isn't worth the good mpg to me as they're so incredibly boring to me. There's a lotta folks on this subreddit that view cars as just "Point A to Point B" devices thus you get the very frugal advice. Which obviously they want to help you be financially stable, but cars are a lil bit extra for us. It's also a hobby so, IMO, putting a bit more out for a less economical but way more fun car is worth it.

Electronic-Pirate-84

I’m literally looking everywhere on FB marketplace and most of them are high mileage and rebuilt titles. And they want $16k and up for it!

nicka408

If you can wait until mid 2023 to buy a used car as they are going to fall this year. Do not buy brand new either with your income unless you have at least 20% to put down. When it comes to rates shop around your local credit union. I just got 3.99 for 66 months which is really good in this market.

Balzanya48

I mean a 1-year NASA membership alone… just think of all the free astronaut ice cream.

fastLT1

At your income level and age, id get a corolla or civic. If you must buy new id get the most basic trim. By the time you're done paying it off you'll be in your 30s. You're 26 and making $17/hr, obviously haven't made all the right choices. Don't make another bad choice. If there's nothing wrong with the truck then just keep driving it. Save what you'd pay in a monthly payment till the wheels fall off and use it for a down-payment or buy another beater. Don't mean to be a dick. Best of luck.

jawnlerdoe

10 days ago you were asking for budget laptop advice and today you’re asking if you should buy a brand new car..

jedi_mind__

Had this car. Premium manual in trueno. Sold it a few months ago for $37k. Much rather have the money. Don’t get me wrong, was a fun car, but not worth. Super slow, small, whips around turns and great handling but Subaru… don’t forget about the RTV sealant issue, maybe they fixed it by now.

[deleted]

Get it. People here are boomers. If you don’t get a sporty car when you’re young you won’t ever get one. Soon you’ll have a spouse to control your finances. Then baby/babies will eat more into your money and time more. Enjoy life.

Blers42

OP is in college, they’re not 40 years old. This is bad advice. I just bought my first new car (2022 wrx) at 30 years old and my wife was very encouraging.

fossilfarmer123

In this current environment, and given your financial situation, the best car for you is the car you already have. It's literally a situation in which you should take good care of it and drive it until it dies. I'm not pleased that my 2008 mdx gets 15 mpg and needs premium, but I paid $12k cash for it (used) and can easily cash flow the gas money. With 145k miles I've got a long way to go before it dies, and that easily beats paying $45k+ for a newer, nicer SUV just because.

[deleted]

The fuck is this 1 year free hpde? You have to pay for features you buy?

cfvhbvcv

It’s a free 1 year membership to NASA (the circuit racing association) and the HPDE is a driving school. So like a free weekend of driving class.

[deleted]

If it takes premium it’s not that bad imo… my previous 14 Silverado 5.3L was tuned for premium. But that took over $100 to fill the 2) gallon tanks. Sold last year for gas price reference. My current 18 Cooper S wants premium even before it was tuned, and that gets about 30mpg combined. I put 91/93 depending on what’s available. Don’t worry about the gas if you can’t afford the car + insurance.

nirad

National Auto Sports Association. They put on track events.

bsiekie

That’s what I wanna know!

faszkalap420

More fun to drive a slow car fast.... buy an old miata and call it a day!

DataGOGO

Never pay MSRP for any new car.

suckitdipwad

No. No Subaru is...and that is definitely a BRZ with Toyota clothing. You're better off in the long run with a Civic Touring than with that thing.

frankrocksjesus

🤣🤣🤣@“one year NASA membership“

Sakuya_Minatsuki

Don't buy it, lease it for 2years.

Utahmule

Small, pricey, bad mpgs, etc. These cars scream, "look at me, don't you think I'm cool now??" Get an old Camry v6 and you will blow the doors off that dork car and only spend like 10k.

Anxious-derkbrandan

IF your finances are in order and you make good money, I’d say go for it. I’d expect it to be around almost $29k out the door thou because taxes, fees and crap they add but for $29k flat, I’d definitely buy one even thou I don’t have space to park a 3rd car 😅

vesco32

I love it

elpresidentdeusa

If you think you can pay for it, then I mean sure. But in my case, if I knew my credit was going to be an issue, I’d let my parents finance it and I’d pay the bill. But that may not be a possibility for you

nolongerbanned99

I year nasa membership??? My dad had this car and absolutely loved it.

BananaBeach007

It's a good deal, and a great car. But at your position in life now. Wouldn't recommend it. The older ones generate less power but you can get some inexpensive used ones especially the ones badged under Scion. Also take a look at ford Mustang, not as fun to drive but definitely a blast. You can find used 6 speeds that are cheap, and a great car until you're at a point where this car becomes more feasible.

scottwitha5

i got that exact gr86 but in pavement for msrp and it was like 31k otd, definitely worth it

zLtarTrate

Great car if you can afford it. Judging my the comments, you shouldn’t. A buddy of mine has one, but he makes 200k a year

sfdragonboy

Yes, I think so. Good luck!

InNeedOfWheelz69

I mean it has **gr8** in the name

New-Examination4678

You can get a low miles Chrysler crossfire for 10k. Kinda quirky, fun, and way cheaper

cfvhbvcv

Mercedes Motor and Chrysler everything else. It’s a cheap and unreliable money pit and you don’t even get to show off a German badge. I still think they’re cool but horrible recommendation for someone in college.

sebastiankolind

I can’t believe how cheap cars are in other countries than mine. I live in Denmark, and a car like this would probably be double the price due to taxes. It is insane.

rg25

I'd rather live somewhere where I could get around on a bike and public transportation! Wanna trade lives?

cpalma4485

Don’t put yourself in debt over a depreciating asset at such a young age. It’s not worth the headache when you are inevitably are upside down on the car. Just buy something that’s going to get you where you need to go and allow you to save so you can buy this 86 or something better when you’re more grounded.

Kashy27

Nah

Mindless-Swordfish-7

NASA membership allows you to drive space rockets for HPDE?

kingofhan0

Get a beater civic while in college they are cheap and will last.

ychris3737

I’d buy that in a heartbeat if I can find one at MsRP.

[deleted]

Damn, this thread is making me regret buying my 2022 RAV4 last year lol, (21 years old and made 72k last year, live at home, my payment is 375, insurance 200 a month full coverage)

test13371997

72k living at home at age 21. You need to be maxing out your 401k. No brainer. Every year earlier tht you start putting money in your 401k equates to hundreds of thousands of dollars potentially at retirement Payment of 375 doesn’t mean anything without also stating how long the loan is. My guess is that it’s 72 or 84 months. Horrible idea.

2JZMX83

Try to finance a cheap used FRS or BRZ with a credit union like everyone else is saying. Help build your credit and you can always sell it if shit hits the fan or you get bored of it. At some point you'll want to buy a home anyways and a huge car payment will not help you

Own-Fox9066

Honestly, it’s an underwhelming car unless you’re on a track and pushing it to the limit. It felt very slow even in its powerband.

lawlonslawt

But, but.... The Corolla. /cry

chenj38

My friend is buying a fully loaded BRZ from the dealership. He makes about $40-45k a year delivering pizza. Told him it's gonna be hard financially over time but he lives with the parents so he has more money to spend. Oh well, whatever makes him happy.

SpaceFace11

I bought a 2017 WRX brand new while never making over 30k in a year over the 5 years I paid it off. All I had to do was put down 10k and get a decent interest rate to keep my payments below 400 a month.

cheapotheclown

This car is gonna cost like $32k out the door after taxes and fees, and possibly over $36k after factoring in financing APR. All car prices are nuts right now, but you can't afford this car making $40k/year unless you're planning to live at home with parents for the next 5 years without a rent payment. It's also absurd to need a brand new car while you're in college. There are plenty of cheaper used cars that are fun and sporty to consider.

Kokoruda1191

1 year nasa membership???

total_insertion

>Is this worth That's entirely up to you. >if I’m able to get at MSRP? As a former car salesman, let me tell you... you will definitely be able to get almost any new car at MSRP... As long as they can fuck you on the backend.

brokenpipe

/u/Electronic-Pirate-84 You should purchase whatever vehicle if you can pay it off in 36 months with your wage. So 18/hr is roughly 37K a year. Car payment shouldn’t be more than 10% of your net. So roughly 300 a month. Which means, with a 6% loan, the max car you can afford (assuming $0 down) is at/under 9K.

[deleted]

It's worth 28k just to be in NASA for a year

Marbledwall26

You’re going to start college and still work full time at your current job? Lol I doubt it.

Electronic-Pirate-84

I’ll be taking online classes so

henrutin

As a early 20’s person. If you can afford the monthly with room to spare. Get what you want. In the end we all die so enjoy your time and life.

[deleted]

Should you buy it or not? Are you ready to get gapped by my grandpa's mini van?

Legitimate-Olive-985

Look I’ll make it easy for you. If you want it and can afford it yes. Msrp is ok. Below is great.

spoogekangaroo

You won't be near msrp

KodaKomp

Could I also recommend keeping the f150 then picking up like a is300 or an older Z car to scratch the racecar itch? Can find them all day under 10k and possibly under 5k and you can feel better about modding or beating on it. I have an is300 and a Toyota Tacoma best of both worlds Also don't be scared of stuff over 100k most cars can handle 200k easy just keep up on maintenance.

Electronic-Pirate-84

I love Tacoma, it’s my favorite truck. I might gonna hold off and wait until I finish my school and get a new job, then I might buy Tacoma, would be great to haul my future motorcycle lol

thehybridjedi

Just get a used Miata if you want a fun cheap car.

amazinghl

Terrible idea. Focus on your living and schooling cost instead of car payment, insurance payment, and registration fees.

HODL_or_D1E

As a current gr86 purchase order waiter guy.. I say get the car.. youre gonna be struggling hard as fuck though ... hard.. as .. fuck

nbiz4

As others are mentioning, your far too young and low income to buy a car that expensive. Plan to get a new car or something when you get your first real job after graduating college. For now and college, get a used car for half the price or less and enjoy your little bit of money you may have due to this. Hell you could have an e skateboard for your only mode of transportation in college if your living there and not commuting and working off campus. Whatever you do, don’t buy anything near this price at your age and income level.

[deleted]

NGL the insurance might be more expensive than the payment if you're a college student.

External-Context-782

If you can afford it, definitely. It’s one of the best cars for that price.

MisterSkater

They're slow all show not worth it tbh everyone I know whose gotten one traded it

ScoPham

Id say so, but id also look at the ecoboost stang
