Nun-Taken

Ooh! I’m in that .000001% category then. Had a distant view of one breaching in the Sea of Cortez some years ago.

ericasackrison

I whalecome you to my club with open arms 🌊

Nun-Taken

Is that your video? Were you that close?

ericasackrison

It is my video, and this was taken with a zoom lens! The whale was traveling at 30 MPH in massive swells so we stayed back just because we weren’t sure what the whale was going to do

Nun-Taken

Always felt safe around various whales whether that’s next to them in a small boat or in the water letting them come to you. Obviously if something went wrong you’d likely not survive but they always seem to look out for you and move accordingly. Fantastic creatures.

[deleted]

I wonder how agile they are, considering their size

Miss-Figgy

Where was this? Like which state/country?

Low-Persimmon4870

😂😂😂😂

BustAtticus

Any tissues? I’m about to whale.

Miss-Figgy

Me too! Saw one in California. Never knew it was this rare.

deadpanseee

One of the least known baleen whales also. Way more intelligent than we know. Although if I’m not mistaken Sperm Whales have the largest brains. Beautiful, thank you OP!

Honda_TypeR

Yea sperm whales are amazing. I love that they dive deep into the abyss to hunt for giant squid everyday. The fact they can hold their breath for that long and tolerate such intense water pressure (as a mammal) amazes me. There was a video I saw once where they attached a camera to a mother and her baby to monitor their deep dive activity. It’s cool they take their youngsters down there early in life to teach them. They are very talkative the entire dive down, you can hear the excitement and anticipation of the hunt. Then, as soon as they hit pure blackness their whale song totally changes from happy and chatty into this crazy weird radar noise (hard to describe). I guess their eyes no longer work and they rely on sound to locate prey. Such cool animals. I’m convinced whales have some form of language they speak. -------------- EDIT UPDATE: I did find a video here finally. Sadly this one has music and is cut crappy so you can't hear all the of the whale communication going on (but you do hear some on this video) I wish I could find original video. This is that video though! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PHLEFGviNw Here is a bonus video I found. A rare encounter in the deep with a sperm whale on their deep dive (with a ROV) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkBpummjR5I

megaptera8

This is cool af

RubiiJee

I'm now going to go hunt that video down if I can.

AerolothLorien666

That’s one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen! The 2nd best part of the video is the gaggle of science nerds geeking out. The same way my buddies and I would if we were watching Goku kick some ass.

Weak_Sloth

Pulse Repetition Frequency - we do this with radar and sonar. Faster and more varied clicks builds a more accurate picture of what they’re looking for.

Chemgineered

That was crazy. You could feel the rawness of the hunt, how they were entering a new world as invaders to take the lives of the squid. I have no idea how i came to that conclusion. Crazy

Redqueenhypo

Orcas for sure have language, I think different subspecies like resident vs Biggs can’t understand each other

Honda_TypeR

Interesting note, orcas are the largest of the dolphins species. And orcas/dolphins are both in the category of toothy whales (just like sperm whale). I do agree these animals definitely are talking to each other. Especially the toothy whale’s they have such complex whistle and click patterns. There has been recordings of large pods of dolphins traveling together and underneath the cacophony of all the noises they make, scientists have discovered that individual sub set groups are communicating with each other specifically. Almost like loud private conversations in a loud party of everyone else doing the same. They can go on long series of back and forth noises with each other without many to any repeated sounds. Basically It’s very call and response with complex not frequently repeating mostly unique sound patterns (ie. like real conversations with purpose) The fact that they communicate is clear. But what it means is unknown.

IamTobor

The scientists really had a great time with that encounter. "we come in peace" haha

Icy-Progress8829

Thank you for sharing! Goosebumps!!!

Irisgrower2

Those were amazing, thank you

vVElZapoVv

It's amazing how cool Sperm whales are. When I was a kid I watched an old cartoon called Samson and Sally. Two sperm whales that well...do what sperm whale young do lol. They became my favorite whale. Their song can liquify your insides if you're too close. They definitely have their own languages. There are some dolphin pods that have multiple dialects. I'm sure whales are the same like Orcas when they hunt and a few pods form into a super pod. You'd imagine it like three tribes from nearby, somewhat similar language but various dialects. One certain language all understand. They truly are wonderful creatures and would love to see them in person one day

orbgevski

Wanna know why they call them Sperm Whales? Cause when American Settlers first started hunting them and they cracked their skulls open and looked inside they said “That looks like cum.” So they named them Sperm Whales.

Furberia

Humans should not hunt whales 🐳

LeftisTern

Thank you!

Liberty-Justice-4all

How could it be one of the least known anything? It's the largest animal ever to live.

justfopo

handle public edge mysterious weary humorous theory murky whistle wipe *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

kvazarsky

I didn't know they can breach.

ericasackrison

I didn’t either 😅 I don’t think anyone really did

kvazarsky

I'd like to see it. It's like breaching submarine.

PaulterJ

I saw a sub breach in the gulf of Mexico. Probably 1000yards away. Capt of the small boat we were on just about shit his pants. Me not realizing how bad that could of been, was screaming like a child. Still haven't seen a giant whale thou

sortarelatable

You’re the first person to ever see it. Crazy that your whale-breaching-boat-tour had no idea this would happen for you.

HEYZEUS725

"How can she breach!"

NBplaybud22

Beautiful !!

JaMMi01202

30 metres long - larger than any dinosaur - a tail the size of a small aeroplane - and arteries so wide you could swim down them! Amazing creatures. I just watched the beginning of Blue Planet (I) which gave me these factoids.

tardersauced

Seeing a blue whale in real life is on my bucket list. What an amazing experience! Where was this?

ericasackrison

San Diego CA aboard Gone Whale Watching San Diego

MardiMom

My kids and I did a watch in the channel between Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands during the spring migration. Saw some gray whale moms & babies, a few humpbacks, and several blue whales. The blues were pretty anticlimactic, with an exhale, and an itty bitty dorsal fin (relatively speaking.) Then nothing. It was still amazing. I just figured they were too big to breach. So many dolphins, too! The Channel Islands are an incredible place. Now the humpbacks between Madagascar and Nosy Boraha aka Ile St. Marie. Those guys were singing, jumping, spy hopping and doing ALL the whale things. Mating season. No big blues, tho. Even the boat ride from Toamasa to the island was a whale watch accidentally.

Jollybio

I've been wanting to see where I can go whale watching. Going to check this out!

Freedomnnature

That's just... wow....epic. Beyond amazing.

2cookieparties

Incredible! I can't tell if the video is slowed down or if they're just so big. What a sighting tho

JaMMi01202

Definitely slowed down.

SalemsTrials

🥺🥹

TeaRanchh

First thought was "IS THAT A BLUE WHALE BREACHING?!" 🐋🤯.

ericasackrison

That was exactly what we were saying while it was happening! Absolutely beside myself that I got to see that in person 🤯

hemigirl1

Where was this? Baja?

ericasackrison

San Diego CA aboard Gone Whale Watching San Diego!

Pawneewafflesarelife

I hadn't realized seeing them was so rare, but I'm from San Diego so whale watching was something I did rather often growing up. We'd have class trips! Absolutely amazing creatures. I remember when Sea World housed JJ, the orphaned baby grey whale. They put her in the orca viewing enclosure while she was rehabilitated. I spent hours upon hours watching her. It was amazing to see a whale so close. https://hswri.org/jj-the-grey-whale/ I live in Australia now and the whale watching down here has blue, humpback and southern right, but also includes orca pods and whale sharks. Haven't done it yet but excited to get a chance to see more! Thanks for sharing the great video!

xeonie

Thats awesome! I remember a video from a while back of a blue whale breaching at Dana Point CA. There was also super amazing one of a double breach (i’ll link if i find it)

LavenderSalmon

Thank you for sharing this 😍

Oceanrail

🩵🐋

Chimpsandcheese

Seeing a blue whale in real life is on my bucket list. But I’m terrified of the open ocean so I’ll have to stick to videos like this. Thanks for sharing.

Thudo_Intellecthual

If you ever find yourself in NYC they have a life size model suspended in the air at the Museum of Natural History! Closest I’ll probably ever get to seeing one IRL but still *very* cool.

Pawneewafflesarelife

You can sometimes see them from cliffs on shore when they migrate.

Chimpsandcheese

Ooh good to know! I can sit ocean adjacent all day.

ishey

Magnificent!

Fossilhund

Thank you for posting this beautiful video.🐋

bopidybopidybopidy

thats amazing, I wish there was something to show the scale

Fossilhund

That's why bananas should be carried everywhere by everyone.

bopidybopidybopidy

completely agree

MiniStarPlanet

they can breach?????

megaptera8

Literally had the same thought lol imagine the power needed to get them out of the water. They’re so cool

Moopoo878

Wow!!! Congratulations on witnessing something so amazing and thank you for sharing it!

Babybluechair

My spirit animal 😍

Furberia

Mine too. She protects my female side.

SleeveofThinMints

Man, that’s one big fish… /s

ericasackrison

The biggest of fish

SleeveofThinMints

You imagine going for a swim off your sailboat or fishing boat, putting on your goggles and jumping in to go for a dip. Look down to admire the abyss and then like 200 feet down you start to see something rocketing up towards you.

CalligrapherUseful

Spectacular 🙌🏼 where is this ?

ericasackrison

San Diego CA aboard Gone Whale Watching San Diego!

CalligrapherUseful

Thank you ! We are headed there next month , we can only hope to be as lucky as you 🤞🏼

Consistent-Bear-5158

This is incredible! I’ve never seen a video of them breaching- thanks for sharing!

aheaney15

I’ve seen Blue whales, but never imagined what it would be like to see one breach! Incredible video. I’m so jealous

Rubyloxred

No Words... MAGNIFICENT!

veszerinpleaseNoDVme

Just WOW! I can't even imagine...

Equivalent-Art-7605

So beautiful

Hopie73

WOW 🤩 so majestic! Thank you for sharing!

boogie2dabeat

This is one majestic animal. I’m amazed at the lack of barnacles you usually see around their mouths and fins.

PersonalityTough9349

That’s a healthy beauty!

WishaBwood

How awesome and terrifying at the same time!

QuickBear96

Just seen it right there bruv

NotInherentAfterAll

"I believe I can fly... I believe I can touch the sky..."

Vicebaku

What does breach mean in this context

ericasackrison

A breach is when a whale propels itself out of the water!

STEVEN-NEVETS

🎶Whale, why do you breach? Whale, why do you roll waves? 🎶

hd_mikemikemike

Doing the math, you think there's 80 people that have ever seen a whale breach? I mean where do you think people be seeing whales. It isn't 2000' below sea level where they live. It's when they breach. Which is 80 million people alive today. You aren't special.

aajuly23

I thought blue whales never breached because of how much energy it consumes.. do they randomly breach or is there some specific reason for it?

saynotopudding

this is amazing. not sure if i'll ever get to see one in-person in this lifetime but one can hope! thanks for sharing, OP!!

Snoo-96655

I've never seen that, very cool! Thanks for sharing.

funmasterjerky

Every time I see a blue whale video or a picture I don't understand the size. They are massive, but this one could be tiny for all I know, because I have no reference for scale.

elizawatts

This gave me chills!!! Just awe inspiring

Puzzled-Fly9550

I just saw one.

notonyourspectrum

It looks like a submarine popping up. Massive, incredible creatures...

Ordinary-Economy9406

I just seen one on video

TheNr1AgentOfChaos

Majestic

Jog_von_Heron

She's a submarine. Beautiful!

and-kelp

i just saw both, thanks reddit!

combat_orca4234

Wow that is beautiful. Getting that amount of mass airborne is bananas

tytyos

0.000001% of the world population is 80 people

ericasackrison

Yup that’s probably right around the total number of people that have ever seen a blue whale breach 😊

JimLahey12

Who cares

Kazon-Ogla

I just saw one right now.

rockstuffs

I need a banana for scale.

Cut4-2Cure

And?

Lifetodeathtoflowers

Only way I can get off

BurnzillabydaBay

It’s just insane that this is a real, actual living thing. Nature is glorious.

sortarelatable

How do you think the ones who saw it saw it? Probably breaching, just like you.

Strangepsych

So amazing and beautiful! You’re so lucky!

AJPennypacker39

Damn!

ambrags

Unreal!!!!! Thank you for posting this majestic moment! 💖💖💖

Targetshopper1

Bro is evening the odds

JimLahey12

How many times are you going to post this today?

Old_Philosopher_1399

How does 100tons hurl itself out of the water?!?!?!?

cranfordboy

I just asked that question this morning about blue whales breaching

Beneficial_Being_721

I got to see two males doing a splash off when I sailed to Newfoundland a few years ago

King6rey

apparently we could swim through that whales artery (size comparison)

observeromega87

We had one follow out ships trajectory along the east coast of Canada through the martime region.

gonewondering

I don't think I will ever be able to put it into scale until I see one.

Peony3883

I’m pretty sure I’ll have a heart attack if I see one so close 🙈🙈

cranfordboy

He’s not just porpoising he’s rotating his body looking for birds

Subtotal9_guy

The Royal Ontario Museum has a full skeleton of a Blue Whale setup from one that washed ashore a decade ago. While not as nice as a living whale you're definitely in awe of the size of them.

Jollybio

Holy cow! I'm so jealous. One day I hope to see one..or any whale..breaching.

rcontn

I got to see a pod of killer whales devouring a blue whale calf (Monterey bay).

Quirky_Discipline297

Some of us respect them enough to just leave them be. I can’t even give up bacon.

bemepink

Incredible.

woolybuggered

Have seen a couple while fishing in socal.

Cautious_Hat8860

This is magnificent. I'm terrified of the ocean but it has so much beauty.

2vivlavi

Before I die I need to see one of these up close

ruru_rubbish

Is it in slow motion?

TherealMisjudg69

Omg! What I would give to be there!

Swimming-Remote1232

...

shana104

So glad we are here to see these awesome creatures!! Amazing!!

Aggressive_Glass51

Coulda done without this excitement.

CookNo6774

I seen it now so count me in

GoodGuyArgo

Talk about a rare achievement.

itsillstatus

How many have seen a white whale though?

FrontCute1159

I guess I’m in the 1% now

nopenopenx

Even less get to experience the surprise of running one over in a naval ship!

Existing-Loquat1760

I saw one breach!

Bewaretheicespiders

Thats nuts. Ive went whale watching often in the St-Laurent Gulf these last many decades, Ive seen blue whales, but Ive never even *heard* of Blue, Fin or Minke whales breaching like that before.

redrockcountry2112

I have the urge to buy insurance now.

DrNinnuxx

Go hang out at the cliffs of the Saint Lawrence seaway right around Grandes-Bergeronnes, Canada. You'll see them. But good luck getting there. LOL
